    A decent wheelbrace.

For bludgeoning the bastard of a tyrefitter that put on the studs too tight and you can't get them loosened when it's pishing the rain on a cold dark winter's night.

    Things I have always carried:-

Hi Viz vest ( in France you HAVE to have one I believe )
    Torch
Wheel Brace , the ones supplied with the car are usually totally useless.
    Jump Leads.
    First Aid Kit.

I would say bulbs , but has anyone actually tried changing most bulbs on modern cars , on one of mine to replace one of the headlights you have to remove the washer bottle , the other one you have to remove the battery , and you need special tools. ( one of my bugbears , it can't be rocket science to make the bulbs easy to change )

A brain, knowledge of the rules of the road and some fcuking common sense  These items seem to be the most forgotten, especially on longer trips on motorways.

If you have hub caps you need a wire cutter so you can cut the zip tie!

Padre Pio sticker, but dammit, beaten to it!
Rosary beads hanging off rear view mirror (never used, the mirror that is) and plastic bottle of holy water. You don't need mirrors when your car is divinely protected.
Old Carinas will actually stop working when you remove those items and won't start again until you put them back.
Optional: Solemn Novena sticker in the rear window. Said cars are incapable of exceeding 30 mp/h (km/h don't apply to those), will not pay attention to any road markings or other road users and can usually be found abandoned halfway blocking the street if mass is on.

For me, donut wheel, jumpleads, 12V air compressor (more because I will NOT pay for air!), tow rope, ice scraper, sunglasses (very important), USB power point, phone holder and AUX cable and notepad and biros.

A driving licence and valid insurance. It is not uncommon to see people driving on their own with L plates - seems the Gards don't give a shoite about this offence anymore.

Regarding torch and hi-vis - don't have these buried in the boot somewhere.
Your high-vis jacket should ideally be in the drivers side-pocket area / as easily accessible as possible, should you need to exit the car at night.
    Same goes for the torch.
yeah, it sounds simple, but you'd be surprised at those who put essential items in hard to get at places!

i have none of that stuff, i hate a car full of clutter and ****e :)

i do bring a good few pens though. you can not under estimate the amount of times you can be caught short for a pen while in the car. a very very useful thing.

    I currently carry :
    • Powerful Torch (Needed for work, so would be there anyway).
    • Hi-Viz (Needed for work, so would be there anyway).
    • Heavy Hi Viz Jacket (Needed for work, so would be there anyway).
    • Old fleece Jumper for throwing over your normal clothes should you get a flat or similar while out and about.
    • Breaker Bar.
    • Gloves (Same as the ones you'd get on building sites).
    • Umbrella.
    • Sun Glasses.
    • Microfibre Window pad thingy.
    • First Aid Kit.
    • Jump Leads.
    • Old cat mat for throwing on the ground if its wet or raining and you have to jump under the car. (Doubles up as a place to rest my site box with my boots, hard hat etc etc)
    • Functioning Dashcam.

We have 3 cars well 2 and a car van

In each one ive a decent Cree torch

Hi Vis jackets for everyone potentially in it

    First Aid Kit

Extendable bar for removing stubbourn nuts

Digital air compessor ( on special in Aldi )

    Blankets

    Hammer/ Seat belt Cutter

I wear glasses so i've 3 pairs of prescription sunglasses (one in each) I think people underestimate the need for these in the winter the low sun is a b*tch

A spare headlight buld ( with the exception of the car van) its a toyota auris and a bulb is a kings ransom so the rental company get it back

I needed a few of the above one evening was coming back from Dublin wither herself and came across two old ladys stopped with hazard lights on and a car on its side in a ditch

I had the hi vis on and torch and hammer/seat belt cutter out in a flash and got to the car. It had been crashed earlier in the evening and left there by the time I turned around there as 4 or 5 more cars had stopped,

It was great to see people stopping to help the cars was unoccupied but the garda hadn't put a bit of tape or a few garda cones around it. We probably weren't the only ones who stopped that night either

And a partridge in a pear tree

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 469 ✭✭JBokeh

Every time I get into the car I find myself needing a pee, never have one in the car.

A proper breaker bar (roughly 2 foot), and a socket for the wheel nuts. Nothing worse than being caught short with one of them hollow bits of crap that come with cars and finding out that the ape in the tyre centre has tightened the nuts until they were on the verge of stripping. Fuses in the glovebox, few bandages and antiseptic wipes, anything more than that is a professionals job. I take a twin barrel foot pump and a plug kit shoved under the floor with my spare too

Just remembered, I bought a set of snow chains in Lidl after the last freeze.
Unopened in box in a compartment in the floor. Been there for years. You never know...!
