Hi I'll be turning 18 next month and its always been my dream to join the PDF, does anyone know roughly when they'll be recruiting this year(if at all)? Also what can I do to train my body to be strong? I'm 5'11"/6 foot tall BTW and weigh 11 stone or so. Thanks for reading. Also for the mods I'm not sure if this has been posted already I apologise if it has been, I can't find a sub section for the army so I'll just place this where I think appropriate, sorry for any inconveniences.

Recruitment will take place usually February - March Unlikely tho this year your move looking at August - September. People will be on soon saying that last year panel will cover this year but its the same most years and a recruitment drive will go ahead for Q3 -Q4 2016 - Q1 - Q2 2017. If your lucky the Naval services mite do a surprise recruitment around march.

    Your options

Reserve been along time since i paid any attending to the reserve so the age mite also be 18 also but check it out.

Download the 100% Army Fitness app on android its for the British Armed Forces but applies here.

Start running & swimming, Give up the cigs lay off the drink avoid drugs.

Thanks for the answer mate, I don't quite follow you, would I be able to send in an application when they start recruiting or have to wait until q3 of the year?

No the panel will open mid 2016 you will if you pass all the required fields be placed on a panel for Q3-Q4-2016 Q1-Q2 2017 the the Army will open new panel 2017 around the same time. You can only apply when a panel is been shortlisted so watch the website Facebook usually the application runs for one month and is advertised in the mean time the RDF ''Reserve Defence Forces are recruiting apply on the website.

Ballymun, you? And no but last year they said over 10thousand applied for the army and I'd say most people apply for both so this year I'd safely say around 5/6 thousand for the navy.

Ahh ye it's a fair owl distance but sure beggars can't be choosers lol, ye it's madness with that many people applying they should beef up the number off personal to at least 15thousand it's not like they won't get the numbers.

Yeah, they'll get the numbers applying but the problem is that half of them are chunky monkeys and call of duty heroes that can't 20 sit-ups/pull-ups or run 1.5 miles

Yeah I seen that article there awhile ago it's madness people go to these tests with no preparation done whatsover, a fair bit off training and you'd do fairly well. I have my prep done and reckon I'll ace it hopefully

When you wake up.in the morning jog and do another jog at night try to be doing 3km without stopping push yourself untill you can't cause alot of people think this is easy but it's not for some they get sick after few minutes and when they start the jogging never sprint at the start cause there the people who will end up getting sick its always the way good pace and then towards the last 3 laps try push yourself bud

Definitely something very small and light and have it 2 hours before hand cause u will either cramp up to death have cereal and tea bud

No, definitely have yourself a good breakfast in advance of it and get plenty of fluids on board. The test itself is nothing. Few push ups and sit ups and a jog, but you might be spending a good bit of time in a warm gym and then out in the sun so you want nutrition and hydration to be good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 232 ✭✭John Mongo

Any applicant for the Defence Forces who finds 20 push ups, 20 sit ups and a 1.5 mile run even remotely difficult, needs to have a long hard look at themselves.

    Seriously.

    Cramp up? Cereal and tea?

Are you on the wind up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56 ✭✭rkrk

tea dehydrates so i wouldnt recommend that. if you were having cereal have porridge as it has slow releasing carbs.
fruit like bananas are essential, which i would have just before i go in, and mabye an egg or two and a good bit of water, bring water with you too. mabye a quick snack for afterwards too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭Tommf

What about a protein shake aswel? I know a Mile and a half run shouldn't b difficult, but I haven't played any sports r done cardio training in quite a while, until a short while ago I started training for this, I can do the mile and half run under the time but it definitely isn't easy for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56 ✭✭rkrk

depending on which one you get, most shakes are best used after training for recovery and getting the best from your workout. im sure there are some on the market that give a quick boost with caffeine or other things like that

    Hi Tommf,

As a Physical Training Instructor may I please just say stop worrying so much.

    You will be find.

Eat a normal healthy breakfast at your normal breakfast time.
(Porridge or Weetabiz (I like to add a banana or raisins, a slice of toast with peanut butter and your tea/coffee)

If let's say your test is for 1100hrs.

At 1015 eat your last snack, a regular banana would be spot on and a small bottle of water.

This will give you tonnes of energy and hydrate you properly (also you will want a wee about 20 mins after so your bladder will then be empty for the run by 1100 while your body will still be fully hydrated)

Refill your water bottle but only take small sips of it during the exercise periods (you will be nervous so you may want to wee again, this is completely find, you will be let use the head at any point except during the tests, put up your hand & ask may I etc. no problem at all)

The best of luck and don't stress!

    Same as that ...
When I was there we were told that we would receive an email Monday (4-7-16) three days ago to say if we were successful in the interview. I haven't received anything anyway and by the looks of it nobody has.
I wouldn't worry about it though, no news is good news when it comes to army recruitment.

do you have to wear a full suit for the naval recruit interview??
