    Nope.

I know a fair few 80 plus year olds who never saw the inside of one & they're still here.

Unless you have serious problems with your eating habits, want a social life or you want to Box, there is no reason to join one.

There are many, many positive reasons for joining a gym. It's one of the best things I could have ever done.

    No.

I lift stuff/do manual work for a living so the last thing I want to do when I finish work is pay to lift more stuff.

Its fine if you work in an office and the gym is your only exercise.

    Posting about "gains" = twat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,315 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

Yeah, sometimes. Usually wait three weeks after the new year, as that's how long most of the gyms money making machine members that joined for the new year have quit.

Funny this thread was made. I joined a Gym before Christmas to get into shape. It also has a swimming pool which is a bonus for me as I can divide my time between the Gym and the Pool.

Want to join one in the summer for the stress release of it. They are enjoyable in that way and a few people I know only go for that. I've no interest in getting big and a few small diet changes took care of the the late-twenties weight gain. That and always being on my feet as a teacher.

Going to the gym or cycling to lose weight is a lot harder than taking in a few less calories. For me, my two coffees a day with sweetened milk and 45 minutes of cycling was the same as two black coffees. I prefer it black now anyway.

I go about 3 times a week and have been doing so for about the last 6 years. Have kids now and between them and work, I find it's the only place I get to have some time on my own which helps me de-stress.

Laughed my way through this until the lone-lifter at 2:50, when I realised that (a) this bit describes my own workouts perfectly, and (b) this is how ridiculous I must look to other gym folk who generally train in groups :o

Don't have the cash to build my own private swimming pool, so have a gym membership instead.

Yep I go 3-4 times a week during my lunch break for weights training , and then football in the evening 2-3 times a week. The two thing's that I do that get me away from work and the house. To be honest it's great for a healthy mind and obviously keeping fit.

    However , thing's I don't do, ever.

    * Post pictures of myself online.
    * Post on facebook about being at the gym , what I do there , how I'm doing , what I eat , pictures of my dinner.
    * Talk about my fitness and weight goals
    * Compare myself to anyone else.

The Gym and exercise are for me , I couldn't give a toss about what anyone thinks of it. Chances are nobody gives a single f*** and I don't want to bore anyone with it. If anyone asks me about it personally I'll always give some advice and be helpfull but that's about it.

Can't stand this sudden 'Gym' culture that's developed where as everyone has to tell everyone they know about their 'gainz' and 'super power mass gainer' crap that's swelling them like f*** , also changed gyms last year to get a bit of peace away from it.

    No, I hate them.

I cycle and swim, but won't set foot into a gym, I really dislike almost everything about them. The smell is bad, changing rooms are uncomfortable, working out inside is incredibly boring, more often than not there are a few people around who'd happily comment loudly about my weight/looks, they're expensive and the chlorine in the pool gives me migraines.

Outdoor activity all the way for me, thank you very much.

Love my gym. It's a small independent gym, no bollox, no bullsh*t. No mirrors. Coaches always present and watching your movements. Everyone is only delighted when someone gets a PB or does something well - egos wouldn't last five minutes but confidence is building all the time. Doesn't matter what shape or condition you're in, what you look like, what level you're at - as long as you want to get fitter.

Yeh. I go to a gym!

Silliest post on this topic I've ever read and I don't go to the gym!!

Thinking of joining one though but I do find them a bit boring but even an hour a couple of times a week isn't that much. I already play a fair bit of badminton but think I need that bit extra.

Was a member of one a few years ago and after an albeit small workout I found relaxing in the jacuzzi afterwards was great.

I've started taking classes as I feel I work and push myself harder when in a group and the gyms nearby are absolutely heaving before and after work each day and I really can't deal with the crowd, queues and numpties in there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,562 ✭✭✭✭Sunnyisland

I try and go 5/6 times a week.as it actually gives me more energy for the whole day a head. As another above poster said its great for the mind and body. But if I do miss a few days its not the end of the world.

The odd time. Just pound out 90 mins on a treadmill, maybe the odd go on a rowing machine, don't touch the rest of the stuff. But only if the weather is awful, don't like running on a treadmill that much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,201 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

Nope, never... and despite having a desk job, spending a fair bit of time in the car, and relaxing on the couch in the evenings combined with a love of junk food I'm somehow not a whale :)
I work long hours and my weekends are generally taken up with catching up with stuff at home and seeing my son so I wouldn't have the time anyway even if I wanted to.

Sure I could probably lose a bit all the same but when the clothes start getting tight I just cut back a bit and that sorts things out again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,205 ✭✭✭✭JohnCleary

Yes, it's the best thing i've ever done. 5 times a week. That said, I do very little weights, mostly core work (which can be done at home) but the big advantage is the gym. 1km per day and I feel wonderful after it.

I find it also motivates you more. Doing core work at home I just don't think I could get in the mood for it.

That said, there seems to be an obsession online with selfies etc. - I am in a University gym and while people do bring their phones and I see people texting a lot, i've never seen anyone take a selfie. I have no pockets in my shorts = no phone. I scowl at people with phones when I see them.

Unless you want to totally Rip your Brahs, jobbing around the house/garden and doing a couple of hours walking per week is better for you than any gym.

I've been lifting since I was twelve. I was lifting when I was ahh. I lifted myself right out the womb.I lifted myself right out the womb. Is it strange to lift so soon?

5-a-side......I'd play that every day of the week rather than go to a gym!

I've made a few unsuccessful attempts at it, I joined various gyms over the years but quit after a few months every time. I'd hate the idea of going now.

I run, walk, cycle and I started back to martial arts just before christmas, two classes a week. That, along with a fairly good diet, keeps me happy and healthy. I have a multi-gym at home that I hop on the odd time if I feel the need.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,615 ✭✭✭Mr.Plough

3-4 times a week. Good set of headphones, good music, good times. Very therapeutic

Some people don't like gyms and prefer to exercise in other ways which is fair enough. But when people say "I don't have time to exercise", it's pure and utter laziness.

Everyone has 45 minutes every day or two to spend on their health.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,802 ✭✭✭beks101

I train quite hard. I've found since I've stopped flirting with various gym memberships though and starting and stopping classes and just committed to getting as strong and as fit as I can, I have no interest whatsoever in talking about it at all with anyone ever.

It just invariably sparks these biggest dick measuring contests or 'who's fittest' comparisons or an onslaught of unsolicited advice from someone who 'knows better' etc. I have absolutely minus zero reasons or motivations to post my exercise routine or gym selfies all over instagram and honestly fail to grasp how anyone associates all these gym culture things with living a better, healthier life. It's vanity, pure and simple.

Previous workplace offered half price gym membership in a gym with a decent swimming pool. I fancied getting swimming in twice a week and worked out that the gym membership would be far more cost effective than pay-per-swim at a public pool. Plus, quieter and a two minute walk from work. So that was worth it, really improved my technique over the course of about six months.

Never really found the gym suitable for me. I would rather run and cycle outside in howling wind and rain than use a treadmill or static bike. And I always found gym weights oddly unsatisfying. Maybe my technique is all wrong. But much easier with a few bars and your bodyweight at home where you can just do a few strength exercises and sit watching TV between reps.

Yes I love the gym. Mostly lifting but i like the pool and xtrainer and treadmill too. It's my me time and can't beat the exercise buzz

I have to say I really really don't like the gym. The monotony of the machines made me feel like I was working on an assembly line filling boxes with match sticks.
Instead I prefer the wilderness. Going for a good ramble up the mountain or down some back of beyond lane. Mucked up to my ankles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,769 ✭✭✭✭Mr. CooL ICE

Yes, the gym is great. But I hate this "X is a better form of exercise than Y" nonsense. Most people live a sedentary life so anything that gets people moving is a good thing.

I used to play a lot of 5-a-side, casual 11-a-side and running. Although the fresh air is great, football gave me too many injuries. Black toes, twisted ankles, bruised shins, cuts, scrapes and a broken finger. I did a marathon which gave me shin splints, meaning I couldn't run OR play football for about 6 months.

I've always had bad posture, but lifting has strengthened my back and made me look taller and wider. For someone who sits at a computer for 80% of the day, this is really important. Gym work hasn't been without it's injuries, but they've mostly occurred when I've done something stupid and careless.

Yup. Whatever exercise you enjoy doing is the one you should continue to do.

I love lifting, crossfit, running, swimming, and have just taken up cycling too. Sometimes I prefer doing gym things, and sometimes I prefer running by the sea.

Long as you're doing something healthy that makes you happy, it doesn't matter if someone else thinks their exercise is better.

The problem with people is that when they find something they *really* love and get a lot of benefit from, they cannot understand why anyone else would want to do anything else. This applies across the spectrum, from choosing a religion, to choosing an OS, to choosing a type of exercise.

Either that, or they're trying to sell you something. Usually someone who bleats on and on about how X is the greatest exercise or greatest diet in the world is either selling it themselves or has purchased it and is now trying to justify that purchase.

No I have a home gym though which I use regularly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,779 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

I used to be an amateur boxer and did it to a decent enough level that the training was fairly arduous.

Put me off gyms for a while after I gave up the boxing (about 15 years ago), but I went when I had access to one for free as part of a job. Running hurts my knees, but the bikes and cross-trainers are good.

If I ever planned to join one again, the first thing I'd be looking to use would be a punchbag.

    +1000

I do go to the gym, not as often as I used to though! Mostly using it for light strength training and the elliptical and stationary bike at the moment because I'm way too pregnant to go running these days. A good swim beats it all though.

No, I get plenty of physical exercise with my job. Having a farm to work is a gym in itself given the various jobs involved.

I have not been on the inside of one too often in my life - but the times I was did not go well _at all_. I realise what happened there was likely a one off never to be repeated - but it put me off to such a degree I do not even like passing a gym any more :(

A couple of the caricature stereotypes in the video are a little too real to what I saw there too. And the monotony other users have mentioned of some of the machines - like a running machine - is not something I deal well with either.

Just not the place for me I think. Give me an hour or two run in Donadea Forest any day.
