Similar to last night the mist / fog is rated at a probability of 30%.

    Didn't spot that Probability 30%.

The fog of Monday morning was a tempo of 30% at the 11pm UTC taf the night before so always subject to happen.

PROB30 means it probably won't happen but still warrants a mention. The 23Z DUB and SNN TAFs last night gave mist with PROB30 FG and that is what they got, only mist. Only Cork's fog didn't materialise.

Knock, Mullingar, Ballyhaise, Oak Park and Johnstown Castle all reported visibilities of down to 100-200 m this morning so fog was still pretty widespread.

I've just deleted 4 messages that are off topic sniping, the 2 participants know who they are. If you don't want to be nice to each other, please find somewhere else to be unpleasant to each other. If you can't do that, we can make it easier for you to do so.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

    Graupel
    Whats this?

It's snowflakes covered in rime. Snowflakes that get caught in strong updrafts and lifted back up into the supercooled region of the cloud, where the water freezes onto them.

METAR code is GS but Met Eireann generally use GS to mean Small Hail, which is diameter <5 mm. GR is >5 mm

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,079 ✭✭✭✭smurfjed

i always understood GR to be HAIL, hence the question, never heard of Graupel:)

GR is hail, GS is small hail/graupel.

Fog patches at DUB again, don't think I've ever seen such a foggy June! Scattered clouds at 200ft and MET vis at 900m, but all IRVR's in excess of 2000m. Think RVP's are in place (Confirmed over ATC), but not LVP's.

Midnight TAF forecasts Winds gusting up to 36kts at Shannon and 35kts at both Cork and Dublin for a time tomorrow. A scene rarely seen in August.

Here's a nasty METAR from Kaoshiung airport in SW Taiwan during Supertyphoon Meranti earlier today. Mean 62 kts with a gust >99 kts (off the scale). 45.8 mm of rain in the previous hour too, just for good measure.

    METAR RCKH 140500Z 12062GP99KT 090V150 0500 R09/0225 +SHRA SCT003 BKN005 SCT010CB OVC020 24/24 Q0977 WS R09 TEMPO 0800 +SHRA RMK CB S-W-NW A2885 RA AMT 45.8MM=

It has made landfall at Xiamen on mainland China this evening, leading to a 184 kph (99 kt) gust at the synop station there (as reported in the 21Z synop). A friend of mine was texting me from her 9th-floor apartment in a 34-storey building and said she could feel the building moving.
