    guys long story short...

i am 32, full EU licence from 2001 - never involved in accident (car) - 5y NCB in Ireland, living in county Louth, i have motorbike (policy as well). And i ma living in Ireland 12y. my previous insurance was untill january this year, but i didnt renew... as i sold the car and i though i will get new one with new car... it was 590€ for nissan xtrail 2.2 diesel 2004 and hold on... this was together with my wife... yes we were paying 590 for 2 people .... and now i cant get anything bellow 2500 only for me... :(

    Thinking to get a car

now BMW 520 - 2003 - the cheapest quote is 3340 third party fire and theft
    skoda 1.4 - 2004 - 2600€
    citroen 2006 - 1.4 - 2700€

I am not trying to be smart here, but can someone explain to me why is that?

i called allianz, liberty, axa, nonosence, aaa.... some of them didn't even want to quote me.

is there something i am missing? i am about to change my licence to irish, i have no problems to do that.. but that will not bring the insurance down to acceptable rate... which is about 500-600 for me...

can someone tell me why is that?

That makes no sense. You sure they didn't think you'd made a claim?

have no claim bonus cert in hand - as before my insurance expired i got all papers from Liberty. I never though that will be so high...

I cant buy a car under this circumstances... btw my motorbike insurance is 480€ for 600cc sport bike... so its not that...

just to add.. maybe someone missed that.. i have full NCB 5y... no claims in between made against me or made by me... and no penalty points or convictions...

Was there a break in the insurance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,474 ✭✭✭vandriver

Did you try getting a quote with your wife as a named driver. Its normally a lot cheaper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 863 ✭✭✭goldenhoarde

Try getting the quote with your wife on the policy and see if that helps. ^^ as vandriver just said

Also exactly how long in months were you without insurance

my wife was always named driver... she has her own car now - civic 2001.. so i cant really get anything on her anyway - she pays 700 for 1.6 petrol.. but she was never named - as it was always me...

Have you tried all brokers? Chill seem to be the best of a bad bunch (that is to say, they obly quoted me 140%) of last years premium as opposed to the ones who were quoting almost double).

Having her as named driver should reduce the cost on a new policy and also naming you on her policy might reduce the cost on that

Have you tried the online sites for quotes

to be honest i completely lost my faith after AAA quote... i didnt try all brookers.. as some of them online didnt even offered my quote... and i was tired saying the same over and over... 32y old.. living in Louth.. etc etc .

I am not crying here, but i am really upset, frustrated...as if i knew this i would renew my insurance - not finishing it - for different car and i am sure i would be paying less then grand... as 2.2 diesel is the same as 2.2 petrol... it would be minimal difference in my book... but stupid me... 590€ last year for 2 people ... now i cant pull some decent quote

i have ... used google chrome to fill all the details over and over.. i tried different cars (engine size) - and i am telling you some didnt even offer any quote at all... just option to fill address again for decline letter.

She has own policy - she cant have other... as she used the NCB as second driver once.. so having her as named driver is not an option for me... she is driving own car now

Is your occupation in the motor trade or anything that could be perceived as high risk?

Insurance gone made lately, my GF got her renewal today.

She's 35, driving since 17, no claims ever, no points ever.
    2008 520d sport €754!!!!!!

She paid €400 two years ago and it had dropped to €300 a few years back, it's going up as she gets older!

Have you tried putting another occupation like office worker to see what that brings up? Then you will know it's the occupation category doing it.

Your wife having her own policy has nothing to do with being a named driver on your car. She wont be using her NCB being named on your policy. You should be named on her policy and her on yours, it'll most likely bring the cost down on both.

Is it new year and new insurance hike, because **** you thats why?

I am already dreading the renewal for scooby this year. It already went up last year.

Insurance has gone insane this year. Our second car, a '95 Starlet 1.3, doubled in price from €430 to €870 (highest quote was €1230) and nobody will give it a classic car insurance either because it's a "high risk" car... A 75 bhp car is indeed scary!! Many would obviously not quote us at all...

I'm 43 btw with 6 years ncb and no claims or points, as is my wife. Mind boggles!

Anyway, we'll SORN it for now as its not worth spending that on insurance for something we only use sporadically as a backup car. Ashame really as its a nice little runabout.

I feel for you mate, your quotes are beyond insane!! Criminal even!!

Not fun driving the motorbike in minus degrees and with potential ice, neeve wrecking at the very least... Have you tried getting quotes for a small car, if that makes any difference?

Perhaps its time for most of us to jump ship and head to the UK instead...? ;)

Another thing that really pisses me off about insurance, as I'm sure OP will agree, is the fact that no company takes into consideration the fact that I also ride a motorbike. My motorbike is my daily driver, and the car is used maybe twice a week.

As such, my risk in the car is a lot lower... But no! That would make too much sense and too little money for Irish insurers.

My renewal went from 860 to 6500, yes Six thousand five hundred euro despite 9 years no claims and no points! They said they were not insuring "high performance cars"(over 170hp) anymore. Liberty btw

Op I feel for you, I've heard of increases but what they are quoting you is ridiculous. I am getting very fecking nervous mine is up in March and I'm driving a 16 year old car so worried I am going to be screwed I really hope won't be as high as you. Feel bad for you OP

Get your licence changed over ASAP. Don't give them any excuse to legitimately (in their eyes) load you.
Is it the same if your wife takes out the policy and adds you?

Mines due the end of the month. Renewal from current insurer was 2900 up from 1500 last year. Cheapest i got was 1800 with Kennco. That fact im 19 with 2yr NCB and can insure the same cars cheaper then you is just mental. I could insure a 320 BMW 2004 for 1950 TPFT

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 jjwada

I thought they were supposed to be only going up by about 10%. Huge increases in this thread.
    Scary.

This insurance thing is getting out of hand now!

My advice would be to to do up a complaint like the OP and shoot it off to the relevant bodies.

    http://www.consumerhelp.ie/contact-form

    http://thecai.ie/complaints/

    https://www.financialombudsman.ie/about-us/

    http://www.insuranceireland.eu/contact

Elections coming up in the next few months so don't forget to complain to your local politician also, just find your constituency and 1 email will sent to all your local politicians.

    OP
Take the advice on the Insuranceireland website, and get them to look at your case.

What can I do if I am unable to obtain motor insurance?
Insurance Ireland operates a Declined Cases Agreement, which is adhered to by all motor insurers in Ireland.
Under the agreement, the insurance market will not refuse to provide insurance to an individual seeking insurance, if he/she has approached at least three insurers and has not been able to obtain cover from them. In general, the insurer first approached will be required to provide the individual with a quote. It is therefore important that the proposer keeps a careful note of the order in which he/she approached each of the three companies.
Where an individual has held a policy within the previous three years, the insurance company concerned is obliged to provide the individual with a quotation. Again this is subject to the proviso that refusals have been received from three insurers (of which the previous insurer may be one).
The only grounds on which an insurer can refuse cover are where to provide insurance would be contrary to public interest.
The agreement is administered by a Committee made up of representatives of each of the companies who have signed the agreement. The Committee also includes a representative of the Consumers’ Association of Ireland and the Financial Services Ombudsman’s Bureau as external observers. If it is impossible to identify which insurer was the first approached for a quote, then a rota of insurers comes into effect and the Committee allocates the risk to the next insurer on the rota.
The Committee can also decide whether a quote is so high or the terms so excessive as to make the quote tantamount to a refusal, in which case it will review the matter.
For assistance regarding the Declined Cases Agreement, contact the Insurance Ireland’s Insurance Information Service - declined@insuranceireland.eu

Try Clements Insurance. They are only doing Insurance for Foreigners (i.e. not only in Ireland, but pretty much alla round the world).

I was insured with them in Ireland and the UK for many years without any problems. Cost was usually in the region of 480 USD per year, independent on size of car. Insurance was underwritten by AXA in the relevant countries, if I remember correctly. Fully legit, and I believe there are quite a few here on Boards who are insured with them.

Thanks, I gave them a go. Came up with $1,025.60 for our '95 Toyota Starlet 1.3, still way more than I'd be prepared to pay instead of SORN'ing it, but was definitely worth a try.

No that but was taken by every one of us who have an insurance policy by putting a 2percent levy in our policies to pay for that particular albatross.
