According to their website they are at Bray for two days 23d and 24th, I have heard whispers about Bray becoming a two day show so perhaps this is the first sign that it is....

It isn't the only airshow rumored for 2 days. RaVen's are booked for 2 days in Newcastle, but only 1 (Saturday) is confirmed.

Newcastle has had rumors of the show being 2 days for a while (going back to when Down Council said them had ambitious plans for going forward) Down Festivals said dates are provisionally 6th & 7th August back in November and a newspaper apparently reported it is 2 days of flying, add to that the 2nd day for RaVen's it does look possible.

Hopefully both are true :D I would love to get down to Bray for the Saturday. Sunday makes it harder to get to for me. The more days for flying displays the better.

I am just hoping Hunters are back in the skies and CAA regulations are eased up again after the tightening of display rules after Shoreham. I think Portrush is going to become a must see for me. I really enjoyed 2015.

I have removed Shannon and Abbeyshrule from the airshowsNI website as I have not seen any indication of a 2016 show as of yet. If it pops up I will put them back on the site.

Will we be ever see the days of baldonnell back? I can also remember an airshow at Dublin Airport could have been late 80s or early 90s

In short, no. The external company that ran the last one made a complete balls of it.

I dunno about that tbh, as there is a volunteer organisation getting up and running and has some of the same people in it as the malta international airshow team set up by MAS (malta aviation society) they have run that as a volunteer organisation for the last number of years and do a great show.

I wish all the crew in the irish version all the best when they get setup.

Unless these volunteers have some serious pull in the Dept of Defence its never going to happen.

There has never been a public show at Dublin in modern times (if ever), unless you are referring to the static display of some aircraft from the USS John F Kennedy in 1996.

Means absolutely nothing I'm afraid. The Dept and the DF are two completely different beasts with different modus operandi.

I admire your enthusiasm but there's a valid reason there hasn't been one in over fifteen years.

You must have missed the part where I said 'all the best to them'.

Being negative and being realistic are two different things. The Dept won't authorise a couple of civilian enthusiasts to takeover a military airfield to run an airshow and I highly doubt the brass in Baldonnel would want it either after the last fiasco.

I'm fortunate enough to have attended several of them over the years and while I would love to see another one the reality is it won't happen.

Straight from Bray's facebook :D Looks like it is 2 days :D
Save the date.......The ‪#‎BrayAirDisplay‬ is scheduled to take place on the weekend of July 23rd and 24th 2016 *subject to licence.
More information about the aircraft taking part and event activities on the ground will be available on http://brayairdisplay.com/ in the coming weeks.

The #BrayAirDisplay is in association with the Irish Aviation Authority, Wicklow County Council, Bray Summerfest & Smitech.

Don't they always do two days, the practice takes place on Saturday and the show on Sunday.

Not too sure, but this is two days for the airshow itself, and not 1 day practice, 1 day show. So it might mean any practice is on Friday? (not confirmed just my thoughts)

Is 2 days a good thing? They'll spread the stuff worth seeing over the two so you're gonna miss out. Like Portrush.

1 Day be better. I think.

They did it in 2015 so google around for that, see what they got up to.

After the Shoreham crash of last year, there must be likelihood that events here will be conducted on conservative lines if any fast jets are involved. In the case of Bray, that might mean some acts being moved a bit further offshore than previously.

Poking around I found mention of an 'Enniskillen Festival of Flight' on an RAFA recruitment website saying they need to work with events in NI including Portrush and Newcastle as well as the 'Enniskillen Festival of Flight'
Considerable travel throughout the Area is required including covering NI Events such Portrush Airshow, Newcastle Airshow and the Enniskillen Festival of Flight.

    https://www.rafa.org.uk/who-we-are/working-for-us/job-vacancies

This is the only mention of it I can find though. Will be interesting to see if anything comes of it. Though the listing is for 2016.

Another way of looking at is; double the chance of getting good weather for the airshow.

Heres a list of every aerial event for the year, they update as they get new ones.

Ah, if you're travelling to it your day is picked in advance-->which day has the better planes.

I have a friend who's friends with a lot of the Maltese show organisers and he's asked around about them helping get a Baldonnel show back and he's been told that none of them have heard anything about this...

You don't think that some of the major local financial contributors to the event might have some insider info?

I would have said, "Yeah, Right! " only for the Patrouille de Suisse last year. For years we were under the impression that Fast Jets were out of the question because of the 300ft tall few million tonne hunk of Granite at the end of the Prom. Then for a few years it looked like solo displays by fast jets was as much as we could hope for because of the 300ft tall few million tonne hunk of Granite at the end of the Prom. Then we got the fantastic Patrouille de Suisse last year. I can see no reason anymore to think that the likes of the Red Arrows is an implausible rumour. They did actually do a promotional flyby of the inaugural Bray Airshow IIRC.

[Edit] Was googling for the inaugural year. It was 2005. I found this piece of info on an old forum talking about the Red Arrows and that 2005 show.
The Red Arrows had to cancel as they could not get the height they required (so I am told), Apparantly they require 10k feet and could only get 7500 feet and for safety reasons withdrew from the show.

I wonder given the popularity of the show 10 years later does that mean the IAA or IATC or whatever have given them the required airspace?

Shambles of a show last year. And the piss take prices of everything in Town. Never again.

I enjoyed last years show, though living in Newcastle I didn't have to travel. It seriously lacked compared to past years.

    Typhoon display schedule out tomorrow.

Wish they'd skip the Arrows and book a team like the Frecce Tricolori. Watching them at a show recently was like how things were in the 1980s: the crowd were cheering and clapping and laughing in disbelief.

Then the Arrows came on and did their thing and everyone stood there in silence. They were technically perfect but utterly soulless.

I suppose the Arrows are much cheaper, though, given the distance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 352 ✭✭jasT1981

The Red Arrows display is great, however I find my attention going elsewhere when they display these days. It's not that I don't enjoy it, it is just I have seen them so many times I know their routine almost perfectly myself and know what is coming before Red 10 announces it over the speakers.

At Portrush I found myself more interested in the dogs around me than the display. It is a great display, but when you have seen it 20+ times it would be good to see something fresh and new. Frecce Tricolori would be my choice too.

Great to see it coming back. With the new CAA directives, I think Jets will be few and far between in 2016 outside the RAF in the UK and Ireland

Is the Draken a good show?

The viggen was a POS at Shannon and Portrush(?) last year. Looking at birds on a feeder was better.

I'd be happy to see a Viggen and/or Draken display - types that are otherwise extinct and which were innovative designs. The restrictions that may be imposed in terms of distance from the crowd or the nature of manoeuvres permitted are factors that we will just have to live with.

Restrictions didn't exist at Shannon and didn't apply over water at rush.

They're not flying them jets at all, the engines would stall if they flew any slower.

Part of the booking of these private jets should be on condition they gun them or just retire them cuz they're boring otherwise.

Could be that as they are retired types being maintained by a small group that "gunning them" could reduce their engine/airframe lifespan.
You dont know what restrictions they may have to allow them to remind licenses to fly at all.

Great news about the red arrows.

Some people on this forum have criticised bray for not having any 'big acts' or fast jets etc.

The Patrouille Swiss last year and now the red arrows this years means somebody I'd listening. Credit where it is due.

With some luck hopefully they will be able to pull a few more out of the bag.
