So i finally took time out to wire everything up (been too lazy before now). I switched the power on and machine made all the right noises until the psu started sounding like a 747 taking off, i turned the power off after about 20 seconds and now the psu doesnt power up.
When i turn the power on now i hear the monitor click on and then click off staright away.
Is the psu fried?? Mitch did say this might be the case. Would the monitor in these turn off if there was no signal going to it, like some pc monitors do?

    Cheers

    havent a clue.
    Got some pics?
I'd check all the fuses first.
Then I'd check all the voltages on the psu outputs.

    Ah thats nasty.

Gotta check the voltages although you have to turn it on for that.

Pics would be great as im nosey.

Not sure on that one, might be best to post on J+ or UKVac as well.

I presume you have the manual.

Cant see anything similar in the manual for that connector. Where does the other end go?

I have something like that in my astro, its connected from the monitor chassis to the pot adjustment board. Monitor doesnt power up without it connected. Bit of a wild guess though.

    What monitor is in it?

It goes up the back of the monitor panel unit, need to make room to open the back up and have a look coz she's a beast to move

As edd mentioned, a monitor won't give an image If any cable is not connected or wrongly connected. I doubt there are too many places for that connector to go. Case of trial and error on both of the monitor chassis boards.

I agree with edd, it does look a bit like the connector used on remote board but that wouldn't be coming from the back of the monitor itself. It would snake along from some other access point and connect directly to the main chassis.

Yeah from what i can see without opening it up is that the other end is already connected somewhere on the monitor and this prob was disconnected when it was taken apart, so i guess ill just have to open the back of the cab up to be sure, need to move half the stuff outta the shed first

Update that connector is for the light gun sensors, but still no clue where it should connect to

This is all i get from the monitor

More guess work, from my poor googling skills it has to go to the light gun sensor board.

Chihiros can be a bit funny and won't output a pic if not connected right ,I know I had times where it shows as a black screen because of a connector not in or the wrong place....
I'd suggest opening it up to make sure none of the caps have exploded a known issue with these.

Yeah i think thats what ill do tomorrow,is it worth getting fixed? I also noticed that the gdrom doesnt seem to spin either, this is obviously related to the chihiro yeah??

Yeah read that somewhere else, still scratching my head of this would cause my monitor issue

The service manual has a lot more detail than the instruction manual.

Yours looks like a type one from the pic ,slightly different from the type 3 dimm board is seperate ,but still pretty much the same thing.
If I get a chance I'll boot mine up over the next day or two and see if I can help in anyway.defo worth cracking open just to be sure.get some other pics up also it might help, although browsing on the phone isn't helping me!
There are the replacement boards around but and full new chihiros are around 250-300 GBP these days .../me waits to see one go for cheap now lol

OK when powered on status LSD should come on 4 anyway ,they're should be power lights lit up over by the poer connectors.
Do you have avip cable attached?
Not sure on what the cable you posted earlier is but it doesn't look like a monitor cable ,looks more like an io connector

Best bet so to crackbit open ,it could be just not seated right ,but probably unlikely it's that but wort a go t least.at least opened you can see if any damage is apparant
There's an abundance of things that can go wrong with these caps, gpu/cpu overheating from fans seizing etc,so gonna be hard narrow down .but worth giving it a once over anyhow

Well took the chihiro out of the cab and opened it up.Couldn't see anything physically wrong with it or anything blown but those of you that know more about this might be able to spot something.could it be as easy as a dead battery??(not knowing my luck)
Took as many photos as i could

    Are those rusty standoffs ?

Do you have a multimetet ?check the voltages going into the board ,if they are OK ,check a chip or one of the other cn's,that you can get a pinout off and see if it's getting that far on the board

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,066 ✭✭✭FixitFelix

Yeah the standoffs are rusted, don't have a multimeter but will pick one up for testing

So finally picked up a working chihiro type 3 mobo, flicked the switch everything lights up and I hear the start up tune through the speakers but nothing shows up through the monitor :(
I've no gdroms as I'm waiting on my Piforce to arrive but from what I've read I should still see the "chihiro" boot screen.
I can here a couple of clicks from monitor but that's about it
Will have to pull it open again to see if there is anything disconnected but from the last time I opened it nothing jumped out at me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,785 ✭✭✭eddhorse

    Sounds like a misplaced connector.
Did you get anything on the monitor before this?

No just the same clicking I had before,i had a look in the back of the cab and nothing looks like its disconnected and there is only one connection at the front of the cab for power.
Definitely sounds like its getting power and losing it straight away 😠

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,785 ✭✭✭eddhorse

Thats a shame, not much going right with this beast !!
Has to be the monitor chassis then really.
Can you see its getting its correct voltage input with multimeter?

Clicking could be a relay ?
look for a white, yellow or clear plastic box mounted on the pcb.

    Is a rear projection yea?
    got a schematic drawing ?

Not much info on the monitor itself there.
I've never worked on a projection screen before to be honest .
But I'd make sure its getting power.
meter the point where the power goes into the screen.
looks like its just a dsub connector from the chichiro?
