Michael Bay Confirms He Will Direct ‘Transformers 5’
The filmmaker says “it’s time to move on” and that he’ll soon “have to pass the reins to someone else”
Just when you thought Michael Bay was turning over a new leaf with “13 Hours,” the filmmaker has confirmed he’ll return to direct “Transformers 5” for Paramount mere days before the studio releases his Benghazi movie.
Of course, Bay has threatened to wash his hands of the blockbuster franchise before, and he repeated a familiar sentiment on his latest press tour, telling Rolling Stone that the next “Transformers” movie will be his last one.
“I still have a great time. It’s fun to do a movie that 100 million people will see. But this is the last one. I have to pass the reins to someone else,” adding that “it’s time to move on. One more.”

Bay will direct “Transformers 5” from a script by “Black Hawk Down” scribe Ken Nolan and “Iron Man” writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. The story came out of a writer’s room that Akiva Goldsman oversaw on behalf of Bay, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and executive producer Steven Spielberg.
Mark Wahlberg is slated to return for the fifth film in the series, which is expected to open up the “Transformers” universe.

4th time asking, but can we PLEASE have less humans and more robots?

He's spent nearly 10 years on these horseshít movies with each one becoming far worse than the one before it but they just annihilate the box office, China is a massive opportunity for the franchise these days for release. The 1st film is the only genuinely entertaining one to me, really.

I think with each one they must come up with new ways to make as blatant product placements as possible :pac:

The last one was beyond sh*te.

The scarier part than Bay directing is this will be the lead into a “Transformers” universe.

Sad thing is I will still watch it no matter how bad it is just like I did with the last 4 because of my childhood obsession with transformers.

I've not seen the 4th one actually and for contiunity sake more than anything else, I may have to go about that. :o

Anyone know how much Bay gets for these films: a flat salary or does he receive a share of the Box Office? Can't imagine he's doing a 5th film for any other reason, though equally it's hard to imagine any other franchise, bar the Bond films perhaps, that might allow him to shoot product placement / military scenes that are borderline pornographic.

How much Bay earns has gone up with every film. He gets a salary (probably 50 million) plus backend and royalties from the toy sales. He earned $80 million just from the first film, 120 million from the second, and so on.

    He's current worth $500 million.

Well we are also getting an animated film based on the 1980s cartoon so that will keep me happy and I heard something about Beast Wars

jesus, its a film with robots that turn into cars, they are films you take kids to see. Bay puts some effort into some of the scenes though so he deserves some respect. That base jumping one was awsome

It should have been a series of films ABOUT robots that transform and their civil war set on Earth. Instead it's a series of films about the US army, shadow organisations and a completely unlikable pair of teenagers (and their friends/family) taking on a roster of faceless, bland, generic evil robots with the aid of a few robots that transform. Outside of Prime and Bumblebee, every single robot character in the series is forgettable and replaceable. They even messed up Starscream.

The first movie was good though, there was a bit of time spent with the autobots and the lineup of decepticons was strong (even if Megatron and Starscream missed the mark). After that though, the design effort on the transformers went out the window and even more focus was put on the human leads, the army and explosions. A big problem was how the effectiveness of the army taking down decepticons fluctuated so much. At times they make it look easy to take out a decepticon, at other times, only Optimus can save the day. The movies are mess, maybe Bay should have put in a bit more effort.

    :D

Two characters who had a glimmer of a personality in the first movie and then became nothing in the sequels. Their screen time replaced with 'The Twins', a pair of walking, talking racist stereotypes.

    ah ratchet.

the medic that never treated a single patient in 4 films that included the main hero dying. and ironhide. optimus primes best friend who died horribly completely and totally unremarked by him.

    :D

what pisses me off more than anything now is the complete lack of respect for the characters. if the star trek franchise got the same treatment transformers did the only recognizable character we'd have is kirk, stuck on earth "enterprise" -less , with lads called "spock" "mccoy" and "scotty" but who look, act, and do fuk all like theyre supposed to. serously could you IMAGINE bays version of that ?

and remember the same lads wrote BOTH franchises first films.

TBH i have some hope the side "universe" films , which hopefully have fuk all to do with bay, could be good. but ive no faith in this being anything other than popcorn fodder. when the bleeding video games do a better job than the movies you know your in trouble.

my main hope now is hasbro cop on and start animating the comics like DC have done with its characters. theres some great stuff there.

I'll be avoiding the 5th like the plague anyway.

Agree about the comics. They're great, and savage to see Irish artist Nick Roche get so much acclaim for them. These Michael Bay films are muck, and T5 looks like continuing that trend.

Trying to give it some gravitas and seriousness using the Hopkins voiceover lol

I've said it before and I'll say it again...Sharknado 3 had more internal consistency and logic than the last Transformers.

Absolutely; the buzz surrounding Westworld no doubt influenced the cutting of that trailer to emphasise Hopkins' presence. I guarantee his part in Transformers amounts to little more than a cameo.

An impossible series to pass judgement on at this stage: what can be said that hasn't been already? It's Transformers, a fifth one. They're utter garbage & yet here we are. For Bay is really must be money for old rope at this point.

I rewatched Bad Boys &The Rock a few nights ago and because of those movies alone I'll always have a soft spot for a Bay movie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,906 ✭✭✭Joeface

Blockbusting gone completely wrong. It will make a packet and Bay will apologizes like after ever other one and make 5 more each clearing a billion . Didn't watch all the trailer . Whats the plot this time.

Imdb just says "plot unknown,". Given its Bay IMDB may be accurate

    Confession time,

these are a guilty pleasure of mine, no denying that they're stupid and full of plotholes, but for better or worse I enjoy how Bay directs action scenes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,140 ✭✭✭✭TheDoc

I don't think I'll ever get over these films being ****e. Watched the Animated movie recently with my two year old, and enjoyed it thoroughly more then all this Bay ****e.

Big fan of the series as a kid, continue to be a regular reader and fan of the various comic arcs, but these films absolutely reek of piss. And a pity, looks like this one is introducing Unicron, but with a really weird and stupid twist.

As normal after the first one, giving this a complete miss and will be a really boring midweek evening to bother my hole downloading it

the biggest flaw in these films is , bar the first one, theyve never had any bloody story that made any sense and ALL the cast were more stereotype than character.

about the only hope i have is maybe maybe theyve done a fast and the furious on us and actually tried to produce an actual film for a change.

i mean there IS stuff in that which looks to have real ramifications for earth (loss of the moon from the earlier trailer, the planet scraping from this one) so maybe something that actually matters will happen and shock horror cybertron and earth will become one new planet or something.

but TBH its bay so i dont hold out much hope. i can see the fuker doing some time mullarky stuff to undo it all by films end.

kinda fuking sad that my view of a film is prehaps at best it wont be a repeat of whats gone before and maybe someone will bloody write a proper script with an actual plot for once.

hell im essentially hoping Hasbro has more clout than Bay for want of a better expression.

    :(

Alls I knows is if they so much as hurt a hair on Bumblebee's head there'll be war!

They've already shát all over Ratchet (I found that a tough death scene I'll admit FWIW!).

EDIT ^^^ I just realised I'd made a similar comment over a year ago.
It appears I am still not over it!

Tried to watch the third film over the weekend. I havn't yet seen the Wahlberg first installment. After the second film I just couldn't deal with it. A series really close to my heart just a total mess.

I kinda want these Bay installments to die and someone come along and make proper ones, ideally not with humans and to have a really good Transformers universe. Can't get over how this film looks like the introduction of Unicron, something I should be majorly invested and hyped about, but I just couldn't stay further away from likely vomiting in the cinema ; /

whats making me laugh is looking at the TV spot i get a fierce sense of "social justice warrior" stuff off it.

i.e im a GIRL and im empowered , blah blah blah.

in a Micheal bay flick which STILL manages to inappropriately sexualise whats basically a child.

kinda mad when ya think about it. the cognitive dissonance between whats in the script and the direction could be hilarious.

    :)

I assume all that was shot for the tv spot. Pretty clever marketing actually. I guess the 13-year-old boy market isn't enough to turn a profit on these films anymore.

    Latest teaser.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,988 ✭✭✭constitutionus

Dont want to link as im not sure what the policy is but the 20min clips of the film that was shown to select fans have leaked on youtube by lads that videoed it on their phones.

ya get to see cogman , hopkins character, the "tie fighter" drone sequence , and other stuff i dont want to spoil for those that dont want to know. theres not really enough in it to spoil the film but ya can put two and two together on certain plot points if you pay attention.

a cursory youtube search will bring it up easy enough for now. i persume itll get taken down for copyright infringement in the next day or two.

It's actually hilarious that they have decided to go down this route with the marketing.

I always thought the Transformers movies were cynical but this takes it to a whole new level.

I can't imagine anyone will be sucked in by this. After 4 movies of basically treating female characters like "eye candy" Transformers 5 is going to be the Girl Power movie Feminists can get behind?

    Amazing.

Give me a break... there's ANOTHER secret that's been kept about the Transformers that will be revealed... on Earth again! They really love Earth so they do.

T1 - 100 year old secret in the Artic
T2 - 20,000 year old secret in the pyramids
T3 - 40 year old secret on the moon
T4 - 65,000,000 year old secret when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth
    T5 - 1000 year old secret

I bet Hopkins' appearance in this movie consists of playing Basil Exposition, will give one infodump, then exit stage left (presumably with a bag full of cash). Guarantee the trailer has spliced this single-scene appearance so to capitalise on his presence in Westworld.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,988 ✭✭✭constitutionus

been burned so long on these that im not holding up hope.

that said the lads prime decapitates towards the end looks an awfull lot like the disciples of unicron from the last few issues of the g1 comic.

TBH though at this stage i just wish bay would fuk off and let a real film maker at the franchise.

    shockingly bad IMO.

One thing you can usually give bay is he can do a good trailer. this is just a mess.

bout the only thing i liked is finally ,FINALLY, megatron has an arm mounted weapon.
