Going to Cheltenham

Hi folks, apologies if there's a thread on this already, I scanned the forum and couldn't find one.

I know I'm a bit late to the party when it comes to organising a trip to Cheltenham, but has anyone done it and what would they advise in terms of transport and accommodation?

Transport seems to be fairly reasonable even at this stage, flying into Birmingham is only 45 minutes away from Cheltenham itself. But accommodation in and around the area seems to be extortionate, any ideas? Ideally you want somewhere cheap but not too far from the racecourse and town.

    AirBnB

If you want to stay in Cheltenham be prepared to pay extortionate amounts to potentially stay in an absolute kip. Also, if you're expecting mad craic around the town at night then think again as there isn't that great a buzz around. Mainly because the English can't pull a pint and their pubs are woeful. I always stay in Cheltenham though as I can't be arsed getting a train every morning and evening.

Google Liz Coe cheltenham accommodation, she will find you a B and B which won't be a kip. About 70 or 80 a night stay. You are leaving it tight though as most would be booked. Otherwise, air bnb as suggested. Sterling is strong at the moment and making it pricer than usual. The local cabs also tend to jack up the prices and gouge the visitors for the week. Bristol was suggested on another thread here which you should find but again hopping back and forth on trains or cabs not my cuppa tea. I stay near the track as I'm wrecked after the day's racing and normally retreat to a local pub for a pint and some grub while counting my winnings or losses for the day.....!!!

Where do you go? I've been 3 of the last 4 years and can't say I've found a pub I like

Beaufort Arms for steak dinner and pint of Guinness, then head into town. Agree though that the nightlife is nothing special. O Neills is an awful loss, new owners have turned it into an absolute ****hole.

Last year was first festival under new ownership. Harry Cooks Freehouse it was called, ****hole. Very few beers, mainly a wine bar, bad guinnes and crazy expensive. Little or no punters there by the Wednesday night when I went in, needless to say I didn't stay long either.

Was there in October. Big selection of beers and ales, maybe no Guinness but I don't drink it. Also had music

We always rent one, parking at the track is a bit steep though, £10 a day

Lads whats the best way to get to race coarse from train station ? Taxi ???? Was told walk it , but is not a bit of a trek ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 293 ✭✭nobody told me

They run double decker buses from the train station every for 10 minutes for a fiver return, depending on what time you go normally takes about half an hour

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,049 ✭✭✭Brianderunner

I have both walked and gotten the bus. It depends on how much time you have really as the town centre is halfway from the station to the course (roughly). If you wanna grab food in town or whatever then walking is a good shout but if you're going straight to the course definitely get the bus, even if it is slow, as the walk is about 45 mins.

Flights, accommodation, train tickets and club enclosure tickets. All bought and paid for.
This is my second time going. First time was two years ago and got Tatts tickets. Is there much difference in the Club enclosure tickets?
Staying in Cheltenham in a B&B for £65 a night. Heading over on Monday morning til Thursday.

I'd recommend it if there is parking where you are staying for the convenience of too and from the Airport alone.

Less busy, access to the middle of the track which is great for the xcountry and decent for chases. Its just a nicer area in general

I'm thinking about going over for the Thursday but would i have enough time making the 8pm flight back from Birmingham if i leave shortly after the last race??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,317 ✭✭✭JJs Left Hand

8pm would be tight considering you probably need to be there at 7/7.15

Airport is an hour by train from Cheltenham so you'd need to be getting a train at the latest at 6. Last race usually 5.15 and the station is 30 minutes walk at least. It'd be very very tight. I'm getting the 9pm flight home on the Friday and I'm going to be rushing like

Leave before 2nd last race, make sure of your train times and be gone. Otherwise, leave before last race, have a cab outside track and straight to Birmingham. Can be a bit tight and raise the blood pressure so not for everyone but I've done it on occasion.

Will probably have to leave it so. Thanks Lads

Booked everything early September, flights out Monday home Thursday €78return. Staying in Birmingham/Ibis budget €140 a room for the 3 nights / €70 a head if two sharing. Tried to get something nearer chelt at the time,b&bs hotels couldnt get a sniff of anything and what ever was left was f*ckn crazy money. Worked out all in under €400 a head including club tickets for the tue/wed. Need to sort train tickets then all sorted

Will the on-course bookies take Euros?

Yes. Gregory Hughes pitch 1 and a few others do. Make sure you don't get skanked by them in exchange rates if they pay out in stg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,393 ✭✭✭PM me nudes

Plenty of Irish on course bookies have pitches at Chelt, absolutely no problem betting in Euro

    Just booked
fly in tuesday morn fly out 9pm thursday €59 total
homestay 5 mins from track £60 sterling per nite
Will get racing tuesday wednesday and thursday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 858 ✭✭✭Plasandrunt

where are you flying back from at 9pm from on Thursday?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 112 ✭✭green n gold

Hey Plasandrunt, Ryanair departing Dublin at 6.25 am and coming departing back from Birmingham at 9.30 pm is showing up at a total of 61.98 Euro return. This gives loads of time, even time for a bit of grub at the airport before you return home. Coming home on the 8pm flight works out 23 Euro cheaper but it would be serious rushing to make it. Leaving Dublin at 7.40 am would add another 13 Euros as opposed to 6.25 am, but if 36 Euros overall extra isn't a major issue then Dublin 7.40 am outbound & Birmingham 9.30pm return would be ideal times for a non rushed travel schedule at a flight cost of 75.98 Euros return. Hope this helps.
36 Euro overall extra is 6.25 am and 8 pm return versus 7.40am and 930 return (I should stay away from numbers ffs)

also flying out monday eveneing and staying in the same hotel, like yourself i spent some time looking for somewhere closer to the track but people where taking the absolute pi*ss with the prices they where charging, actually got a place using Airbnb about 3k from the track and out of nowhere the biatch cancelled it, she obviously realised she could have made much for from us. anyone know what time last train back to Birmingham is?

Plenty. If they take bets in euro, they should be able pay out in euro but they carry more sterling so that's the default if they run out of real money :). That's where you have to be wary of getting skanked on exchange rate. You should be fine

Went to book my raceday tickets there and noticed that there's no option for Tatts on Wednesday/Ladies day, surely it's not sold out is it?

Still there for me, tatts grandstand is sold out, not the enclosure

Are you sure? Can only see the option of the Club enclosure, Best Mate Enclosure and the Guinness Grandstand for the Wedsnesday
