Was interested in going to see this car tomorrow https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/opel-vectra-1-6-i-life/11039764 just did a cartell report.

Had 4 previous owners seem to have been a demo for 6 months with garage, then a taxi for 2 years next owner only had it 4 months and last owner for for 4 years.

This makes me think that there is no way the mileage of 96, 000 is right?

looks damaged on the front @ driver side?

Hmmm was just looking on tablet but mob app allows you to zoom in and it does look wrong

To be fair it's a 9 year old car so having some bodywork repainted wouldn't be necessarily unusual especially if it was used as a taxi at some stage.

Personally I think a base model 1.6 litre Vectra is not a very appealing car, I cannot imagine it would be very desirable with clockers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 251 ✭✭gercoral

if it was crashed previously i wouldn't be keen on it though bazz. looks more than just a repaint

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,480 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I agree but you have to a little realistic. It's a 3k 9 year old car being sold by a small dealer. It's very hard to find an untarnished 9 year old car especially at that price from a dealer.

The Vectra is a great car to get cheap as they don't have much of a desired rep. I had an '06 from new for 3 years and put up 150k km without issues, with the same 1.6 engine.

The Life model is the entry spec, with Club being next which only really adds visual spec. Link below is for a Design spec which I had some interest in recently, but with the 1.8 engine, I'd say the tax would scare most people off. TBH I'd probably avoid going for a dealer Vectra in that price range. Any dealer that has one is most likely going to have got it in the trade and will have zero knowledge of its history. I'd advise to keep an eye on fresh adverts from private individuals.

Had exact model 1.6 it died a horrible death into a tree god was it absolute sh1t to handle and just not a nice driver.

Looks ex rental as mine was.

They are extremely tail happy on corners in wet/icy conditions.

Mine had 35k on it and clutch was already on way out including other elec faults and bits falling off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

having been in private ownership for the last 4 year years, i wouldn't let the taxi thing bother me as much, seeing as the previous owner has probably had to take the brunt of any potential problems already.

in answer to your question, being a taxi for the first two years of it's life offers a good opportunity to clock it before it's first NCT, so it "could" be clocked. if it appears to be in good condition though at this stage (4 owners, 8 years, 100k on the clock) and passes a basic check over i would go for it.

that said, the biggest concern is the fact that it's a 1.6 petrol, life spec model. they threw extras at those Vectras so to find one in such a dire spec is actually much harder than to find a well spec'd example. once the tyre shine wears off that car will be pretty depressing looking and will loose around 50% of it's value the minute you buy it.

id spend that little bit more and go with avensis

Thanks but my max max max budget would be 4000!!! I know it's not great but honestly could not put a penny more to it.

My average weekly use is about 200kms with a couple of trips to Dublin thrown in on a monthly basis.

Its probably not enough to justify a diesel car. Really have my head wrecked at the moment as have seen the following that are of some interest:

    2006 Mondeo 1.8 nct till sept 2017 138k miles 2200

    2008 laguna 11 nct till 2018 73k miles 2900

    2006 aplha 159 1.9jtdm nct till May 3300

Reliability is a huge thing for me and or low servicing cost. Style wise all I need is 4 doors a/c and a semi decent boot.

Any advice on above or alternatives please fire ahead ( as in please please help.Really feel like I am ocd looking at cars now!!!!)

Edit: Also have a serious love fest for this https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/kia-sportage-2-0-gse-4x4-m-t-5dr-nct-01-17/11137574

    Would a Mazda 6 appeal?
    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/mazda-6-1-8-5dr-executive/10663110

If that one is genuine is should be quite fresh with only 116k kms on it.

    Carlow area i assume?

did you see this? it's a class smaller than what you've been looking at but it's cheap to buy, cheap to run, very reliable, 4 doors and an ok boot.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/mitsubishi-lancer-comfort/10810735

this is more like the size of car you have been looking at. servicing is cheap on these and they are very very reliable. strata is a nice spec too, plenty of toys!

The diesels are dodgy, the petrols by all accounts are pretty robust.

yeah, the avensis is top of your budget, but nobody pays the full asking price in a private deal, you could easily haggle maybe €250 off that i'd say.

the mitsubishi wouldn't be very under powered, it'd be similar enough to other stuff in it's class. if anything it'd probably be more lively than a 1.6 vectra or avensis.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,273 ✭✭✭racso1975

Great then will try go visit the Mitsubishi and the Mazda 6 as they are very close to each other. Will hopefully get to see them in the morning

    honestly, i wouldn't.

the first mk2 Lagunas were absolute ****e. people say the Mk2.5 (the one in the link) got a bit better, but a revision of ****e is still ****e, which is a shame because they look smart and are dead comfy.

i know depreciation isn't a massive factor at this end of the market, but if you buy that laguna, this time next year you'd be lucky to get €1k for it... if you bought the likes of the avensis you could probably get over €3k of your money back this time next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,340 ✭✭✭mullingar

The Laguna 3 is a reliable car. It failed to sell simply due to the terrible reliability of the mk2

Not with 4k.... you might barely get the roughest example.

OP i'd go in with a cheeky 2500, big petrols aren't desirable and he's had it a while, it's a bit of an insult but a dumb priest never got a parish. Be hoping to settle around 28-2900.

i'm pretty sure every dealer you ever ring ever always has someone viewing the car you're interested in just before you are ;)

don't let it put you under pressure. he's had it for 4 months.

Exactly, when i was looking at mine, the dealer claimed he was waiting for someone to call back saying they would put a deposit down...... 1 week later it was mine.

Anyway, worst case senario, here's another within budget if you dont mind travelling a little.

There isnt much difference, im not sure if the old Exec's only have A/C where the Sport would have climate control, id say the sport has cruise control. other than that, not too much difference.

God that's awful luck. Ah one of the tricks to buying a car is not to get attached before you put money down. Obviously easier said than done and I totally ignored it with my last car purchase.

What do ye lads think of these 2 cars?

I presume this is very under powered http://touch.adverts.ie/car/ford/mondeo/2007-ford-mondeo/9100834 but nice nct and extras with it. Now in saying under powered I should state I am driving an almera piece of crap so it might feel like a concord!!!!

http://touch.adverts.ie/car/honda/civic/2006-honda-civic/8152795 I know its outside the budget but he does state 3 months ago he would take 4500 so might get it for 4200 and sell my ass to get the other 200???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

The Civic is infinitely better... i'd be sceptical of getting it for €4200 as they are a good selling car (unlike a petrol Mondeo etc), but it'd be worth going as much extra as you can afford to do.

Tax till August on the civic too. If budget can stretch it's definitely the car to go for, love driving that 1.8 civic

Mondeo is a fairly heavy car and i have heard the 1.6 is a bit sluggish.
