That's mad. I was told my new car cant be registered until Monday as Revenue system was down at weekends.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

More likely they didn't top up their revenue account till they had to.

I registered stuff 1st of Jan on weekends loads of times.

Ah its all the one really, ive waited two weeks another two days wont do any harm, would just have been nice to have the car for a day or two before going back to work next week.

What's the process around registering new cars anyway, is it through the VRT website? Could an individual register a new car themselves if they had bought it up in NI or over the water?

Is it automated where it assigns plate numbers once you have an account so no people on Revenue side required for registration?

Right I get you, is it done through the dealers TAIN on ROS?

I was in a local dealers today with my mam collecting her new car. Dealer principal was saying all of their stuff went out this morning. In fact the last 161 was going out of his around lunchtime when we arrived. That said there was a lot of stock down the back unregistered.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,102 ✭✭✭✭Drummerboy08

I didn't register anything today. Traditionally the revenue system goes tits up at some point on the first busy day of the year and I wasn't putting myself thru that heartache again this year.

Will start registering stuff first thing on Monday.

Drummerboy, just as a matter of interest how long does it take for a dealer to get collection of a car once it arrives in Ireland?

I would imagine with only a handful of car transporters delivery times would be the same for all car makes.

10/14 working days on average. Sometimes quicker, sometimes slower.

Depends on how quickly customs clear the car.

I can get mine usually within about 3 days if they land in dublin port which they do most of the time. I collect from the distributor as we are close by though which definatly helps. Iv had to wait a week when they landed in cork and had to be put on a transporter

Yeah there's probably a week in getting a car from either Baldonnell or Cork so that's the worst of it.

Fortunately nvd don't lift ours from the docks, Mercedes have their own lad that does it straight to their compound

Yeah BMW use McNamara's alot, but VW/Skoda use NVD.

To be fair it's grand most of the time because you can build it into the lead time. Once you manage the customer correctly it doesn't usually cause grief.

Seen a 161 Range rover Evoque at about 2pm today so must be a fair few new cars registered..

How does insurance work in this case? Bank holiday on 1st. Today is a Saturday. I'd have thought you would need reg for insurance and you wouldn't get that until it's registered. Insurance companies won't be putting cars son policies till Monday.

You'll have a pick up time arranged usually. They were open last week so just call them and it kicks in at that time.

My insurance company covers me from when I email the broker the reg.

I'm getting a VW and I believe the car is due arrive into Cork on Monday. How does it work, for example my dealer is in Cork, is the car transported to Dublin for customs purposes or do NVD have a depot in Cork were this procedure can be dealt with.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,102 ✭✭✭✭Drummerboy08

It should be cleared at ringaskiddy, if you are lucky it will hit your dealer at the end of the week.

I'd imagine it would be next Monday at the earliest before you see it tho.

That said it all depends on how many cars are on the ferry, and how far up the chain yours is.

With a Skoda (admittedly at a quieter time) I got lucky and had it in under a week from arrival to Cork, on to Dublin and back again to Cork.

Customs would only be concerned about the posibility of drugs within the cars, there would be no interest in taxation on these cars being imported through official distributors. I'd imagine very few if any would be checked for drugs as the profile wouldn't be suspicious.

Thanks, I'm just looking for some info on procedure. Dealer had said I should expect the car end of next week, now that was said when I purchased the car back in November so will give him a call on Monday and see how everything is going.

Question on insurance and recently registered 161 cars.

I'm with Axa, they offer online transfer of insurance. Anyone know do their databases update inline with revenue registrations?
I'm collecting my car Tuesday and may not have the reg until I'm there in person.

It would be nice if I could do it all through my axa online account, I'm sure phone lines will be busy if I call.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,102 ✭✭✭✭Drummerboy08

What I get customers to do neil is have it all set up the day before with details of the car/colour etc and then you just have to call with a reg number when you collect.

Alternatively they'll have the number probably the morning of so get them to call you so you can arrange it beforehand.

I could do that alright, thanks. I was hoping to have the reg number so I could arrive at the garage with a disc for the window.

I'll ring the garage in the morning to see if I can get it before I spin over to collect it Tuesday morning.

Ye can rant and rave saying "I seen x, y and z", but until one of ye comes back with photographic evidence of a 161 registration, this thread will be a failure!!

I myself stopped at my local SEAT dealers today in the hope that a few would be lined up ready to go. There were plenty of cars with sold on them, just no plates. In the mix were 2 leon frs, a leon x-perience and a nice l200. That's from what I could see. 2016 is looking fairly good so far!

Great looking car and nice to see a reg font which actually shows the number "1" as opposed to a vertical line "|" :)

Yes but the fancy petrol stuff is getting scarce, when they hit 2008 there's none left :D

Hopefully 2016 will see the return of petrol cars considering the trouble about diesels in the last year or so.

Never thought of that actually, very few petrols around for us buying second hand :o:o

You'll see the likes of Golf/Octavia/Focus but forget about 5 Series or A4 or the like in any meaningful numbers.

I'm currently seeking a petrol car coming from my 08 petrol Audi.
I'm a bit snookered in that I need a band c car at worst (self employed tax claim )and I want power and will be going for a 12 or 13 reg.

Rare as hens teeth. I've worked with BMW, VW and Skoda in that time and I don't remember selling one petrol in a decent sized car!

That said there is an order for a 2.0TSI 4wd DSG Superb Combi and a number of 2.0TSI Octavia VRS so there are petrols starting to come back....

Yes. I was admiring a new Ford Mustang 5.0l, in yellow, in Cork yesterday.

I see its a €1000 to reserve a registration number. For some of the smaller counties does that mean if a customer wants an early/first number, the dealer/customer will need to cough up a €1000 or is it a case dealers have a bull bait at 12.00 New Years Day to get in and get their car registered. I see a pic on the net of 5 vans in KK (161-kk-1 up to 5); €5000 seems alot to cough up just to have 5 nice number plates.....
