After work most of the time without fail I take a nap. I start early and finish early around 1pm so go home and take a nap. On weekends I nap also. Am I alone in this ?

According to sources, it's better to get four naps rather than a full sleep? Anyone ever hear this before.

Mod's feel free to add a poll on this !

I have really been compelled to find someone to fund studies on this question. Specifically comparing people who commute home from work. Because people who drive home are (mostly) awake for the drive home - and people who commute home with public transport do - how shall we say it - cast sleepy snoory figures slobbering against the window beside them.

And I have been curious to know if there is any measurable life difference - using measures such as life satisfaction and work performance - or - and this is the important one - family level commnication - and so forth - between the two groups. Does that 30 or 60 or 90 minutes of road rage compared to that 30 or 60 or 90 minutes of napping - translate into a real world difference in life experience?

Anyone with access to funding for this researching should stick the usual Self Stamped Addressed Envelope (actually I only just this week had to explain to my daughter what one of those is) to the usual bin :)

I wouldn't nap on weekdays. I'm up at 6am for work and not home until 7pm. So if I napped, I would be up all night. :p If I'm getting tired and it's still pretty early, I would call it a night.

However, on weekends I would have naps. Usually just because I'm lying around not doing anything, feeling tired.

I have napped an awful lot over Christmas...

This is something that has often crossed my mind too. Is it better to have a few little sleeps in a 24hr period or one 8hr block?
I used to nap & felt better for it truth be told but lately daytime activities don't allow for it and I think it's making me bitter by 8pm! Should I aim for return of naps. That's a resolution I could look forward to.
Other half has been napping a lot over Christmas, I'm a bit envious tbh.

It's supposed to be good for memory & stress but I can't nap.

Here's a good infographic on different sleep cycles. That Uberman one! How the hell?

Dont people normally mention m.Thatcher by now? The most famous napper (sorry power sleeper) there ever was?

Actually your body needs deep sleep to rest so a series of naps will not suffice.

I used to nap on a daily basis but having children put a stop to that as well as having a wife who passionately despises me having a nap for some reason ....... even if she's out for the day with the kids she'll return home and the first thing she'll say is "Did you nap!?!!?" in a very accusatory and aggressive tone ......... I usually lie and say "no".

Anyway, on the days I don't nap I feel a bit sh*t but on the (rare) days that I do get to nap I feel fantastic ........ I'm also a much better father and husband when I do nap ....... I'd also be a lot happier right now dealing with a toddler who won't sleep at half 3 in the f*cking morning if I'd been allowed nap this afternoon!!

Yep, sometimes I don't even know why, it's like sometimes I get this strong urge to rest my eyes for a bit, and to lie on my bed for a bit.

Doesn't sound good to be so annoyed at your OH for snoring when you're not trying to sleep yourself.

I'd be completely unable to go out and about sometimes without one. And I like it when my girlfriend has a nap next to me, even if she snores.

I'm awake at 5.30 in the morning.

I'll probably nap tomorrow, that being Saturday and not Sunday. It still feels like Friday night.

Yes, I nap. I believe they are one of the greatest ever ideas.

I used to be a great napper. Could nap on demand.
But these days best I can do is close my eyes and wind down. Soon as I nearly hit sleep some bastard inside me (as in Inside out) starts ringing some bell to wake me up.

I sleep very well at night time though. Usually.

When I used work early mornings I used finish at 2pm. I would usually go home and by 4 would be asleep for an hour or so. Really messes up your sleep pattern and you end up going around like a zombie half the time. Glad I'm not in that job anymore.

My brother does and doesn't snore or make any noises at all while sleeping.

Freaked me out the first time I spotted it, I thought he had died!

I have a nap nearly every day after work. I can't help it, I'm just so tired after it. I love a nap but I'm always groggy afterwards and I really hate that feeling.

Yep I do, i work "on call", so i cant guarantee a proper sleep cycle, so each afternoon i nap for an hour or so. I feel better after napping compared to staying in bed all day.

Our work policy actually allows us to nap while flying :)

There definitely seems to be a divide here between men and women when it comes to napping ......... most women I know don't nap whilst most of the men I know do nap with the women in their lives not happy about it at all ......... what's that all about?

I occasionally nap for about 20 minutes at my desk after lunch, it sets me up for the afternoon.

I don't think I even snooze properly as I'm still fully conscious of everything happening around me.

Maybe some of the women on here can explain why they resent the men in their lives having a nap?

I would genuinely love to know ...........

I do nap yeah, not too much or it'll mess up my sleeping patterns but the odd time I need one

I'll never drive to work (well, never say never) for this reason.
45 mins dozing on the coach bus (and I almost always do doze) and having downtime to set me up for the day or for the evening, is invaluable

Why women begrudge men taken a nap?

I love my afternoon nap at the weekends. I made it clear to my wife before we got married that this was not to stop or the deals off! Now I have two kids, 6 and 2. The 6 year old will watch a DVD while the two year old loves to nap with me. She has to be woken up after the two hours!

Yes, I nap most days. Either for 20 minutes after lunch or for up to an hour when I get home. Feel so refreshed after it.

I also need 9 hours sleep of a night. Sleeping and napping are important to me.

Unless you are a baby, unwell or a shift worker there is no excuse for sleeping during the day other than pure unadulterated laziness

There is lots of research done on how much of a nap is most beneficial. 20 mins seems to be the best to wake without that groggy feeling. I do sometimes have 20 mins in the afternoon and feel much better for it. Dh stays up late and by the time we get the house sorted and the kids to bed I am usually ready for bed otherwise , that way I can burn the candle at both ends! Still seem to be able to sleep at night but of course usually it's a shorter sleep then cos I go to bed earlier. I also like a nap if I am going out for the night!

You appear to be rather grumpy this afternoon, perhaps 40 winks would cheer you up a little.

Just woke up from a 20 min nap! :)

Does the power of good, but has to be on the couch and no longer than 20-30 min.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 499 ✭✭Aimeee

Reading through others posts I'm reminded of all the lovely napping i used to do esp when the kids were smaller. I would nap with one while other watched dvd. I used to do shift work back in the day. Would finish at 2. Have a snooze when i got home. Set me up for rest of my day. Also will have a nap before a night out if I've not had enough sleep night before. 20mins is just right no grogginess then.
I'm amused at all the annoyed wives. I'm a bit prone to this myself occasionally. For me i get really jealous that he can just sit down & snooze & ignore all else around him (jobs to be done, kids etc). However i see this as my own problem in not being able to to switch off. As OH says the jobs will still be there afterwards. He's actually right.

Naps are my favourite thing in the whole world. I love naps. Going to bed mid afternoon not a care in the world, feeling accomplished after the hard morning of showering and feeding myself, then giving up on the day to curl up and sleep for two hours.
Naps are even better with someone else. Napping and spooning.
Now though - :( I couldn't tell you when I last napped. I am a very restless sleeper, I rarely sleep longer than a couple of hours at a time and I never feel fully refreshed or awake. Sometimes I get so tired, so overtired, that I find myself doing silly things, like wandering across the street forgetting to look where I'm going.

I'm sure I'll get back into sleep mode some stage, because there's no feeling as good as waking up after a good sleep and a good nap

Do you know what you need....a good ride! You always sleep soundly after a good hard ride.
