Or maybe sacrificing chickens or dancing in the nip on the Hill of Tara? What's that, you say, you're not a member of one of the religions that do those things? Well, we had threads about mass and confession, and neither of those posts bothered to restrict their scope in any way...

Does lashing a few gougons in the oven count as sacrificing chickens? If so yes I'll be doing that.

Of course the same way I observe not eating meat on good Friday...

I will be observing Ramadan exactly the same way as I observe other religions oddities.... With a hefty slice of disdain and a large monkey size serving of salt.

    I'll be observing it.

    From a safe distance.

I'm not Buddhist either, but I have a lovely wee wooden Buddha statue outside the back. Grand wee thing. Makes me look all sophisticated and cultured.

I'll be observing many practices in the year ahead. Some religious, some not. I shan't be naming them here as it's just a vehicle of ridicule of anybody's beliefs in AH.

Mine was restricted to Roman Catholcs and confession. Yours by definition is restricted to Moslems.

    I'm non religious so no.

    Lol.

I shall be observing Hanukkah not Ramadan, by watching a box set of Larry David.

You can join me too, for just 50 shekels. And you get some free gefilte fish and a pretzel.

I wonder though if there's a demographic reason for that.

Did I not tell you I'm an atheist.

But I wouldn't mind a bit of naked dancing on a hill

Yes, Canon 1250 still stands but most people don't seem to observe it any more.

While fasting from dawn until sunset, Muslims refrain from consuming food, drinking liquids, smoking, and engaging in sexual relations with one's spouse.

Then after sunset you can't even have a few beers and an aul battered sausage as a treat!

    Sounds like a good laugh.

Yes, with pork sausages and beer!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,845 ✭✭✭timthumbni

I wil give the Muslims some credit. Doctors have said that fasting is good for your body. I'm not sure if this or refraining from a rake of pints and shots every weekend will make them the master race. My bets are on the pints...

They need more pork in their diets before they start thinking about being a 'master race'. Among other things.

In fairness, I fast nearly every night. For an average of 8 hours.

    Ramadambalam? Ramjamadambalam?

I predict a schism the likes of which haven't been seen around these parts since Mohommad forgot to say "that guy. No. Not him. The other one. Yeah, him with the beard. He's my successor. Do what he says. Be grand".

I'm in the MIddle East, so yes, to an extent. For me it means basically a month of doing half work, starting at 10 and knocking off at three (and doing very little in between), and also a few days vacation tacked on at the end. I look forward to Ramadan every year!

June 2016, but only Muslims are required to observe it.

Christians can observe Lent which is similar, but less rigourous.

Great, thanks for clarifying. I was concerned that us NON muslims IN IRELAND would be expected to observe it. They are clearly a very tolerant people, the muslims.

Thanks for informing us about Lent. As a predominantly Christian country, we weren't aware of it. Is it also in June?

Judas priest did a song for the occasion, didn't really chart well in muslim markets though

"ramadan ramadan ..straight to the heart of this tooown
ramadan ramadan...raising the place to the grouund"

It's in March, just before Easter, the Chocolate festival when Christians eat little yellow chickens alive.

I wasn't aware of this phenomenon of 'eat[ing] little yellow chickens alive' despite living in this country (i.e. Ireland) for almost 40 years. Is it widespread? Can you provide more information so I can prepare to participate in 2016?
