Loved the bright shops, even though I was not buying anything.. wandered through Dunnes marvelling at the decorations...so many lovely things!,,. loved the streets all lit up...loved the special offers on luxuries I cannot usually afford....Loved the anticipation ..loved the Christmas garden in the cathedral and ah that will be there a while yet...loved it all and no real part in the over commercialisation. Sad now... all over..... off to bed! It will all live in my heart and for me the real meaning always...off to bed!

I enjoyed Christmas Day, but I'm glad it's over. As an introvert, I love the quiet, relaxed atmosphere (and all the food) between now and New Year's Eve.

I prefer the quieter period after Christmas Day and right up until 31 December (I don't celebrate that night though, worst night of the whole year for me), I don't mind New Years Day though and one day I love to do a little something on is 6 January. Does anyone remember Little Women's Xmas on that date? My mother used to mark it with a nice dinner and a cake and I do something small now myself or celebrate it with her if I am down with her.

See, this is what I don't get, at all - does Christmas not go on for people any more until after New Years Day? Even if I am in work (as I am next Tuesday), I still have nice food, a drink in the evening, watch xmas films and catch up with people right up until 2 January. And then I even celebrate 6 January as Little Women's Xmas, just myself at home or with my mother if I am down with her.

In Spain, Christmas doesn't actually end until after 6 January, their build up to it starts much later than here, from 16 December onwards but their celebration of it goes right on up until 6 Jan.

I think I am in the minority though as when I am back in work on Tuesday, people will ask me if I have had a nice xmas and isn't it sad its over now!! I don't bother saying any more that I am actually still celebrating :-()

Nah its pretty much over after Stephens day.

    Flogging a dead horse.

Christmas Day is the first day of the traditional twelve days, so to say Christmas is over is a bit much in my eyes.

I'm glad Christmas Day is done now, as it gives me time to relax and enjoy the rest of Christmas with friends and family. I'll only consider Christmas over when January 6th is here.

Are we really expected to celebrate Christmas on the 4th of January when were getting up at 6 in the morning in the cold rain to do a days work?

I'll be up at 4am on the 4th for a flight. Doesn't mean that Christmas isn't over.

It is for a lot of people.

Most decorations in houses do be down the day after new years.

It's a pity in my opinion, but that's up to people. We all choose how we enjoy Christmas. For me, I choose to start enjoying it later than most (my decorations went up on the 19th) and I choose to enjoy right through to the end.

You do still see some up but the majority do be down.

My son is 3 so I'm trying to start a tradition in our family of celebrating the 12 days of Christmas and doing something extra special every day until the 5th when we'll have a Twelfthnight party. Today we're going ice-skating.

I had a good day but I'm glad it's all over tbh. Looking forward now to getting back to normality.

Don't worry OP, there will be another one along in about a year ... And the shops will be full of Christmas stuff by October for your wandering.

We'll still celebrating anyway. With the in-laws today for more presents. Out tonight for more drinking and sleep in tomorrow with my nicely cultivated hang over.

Well we have no problem "celebrating' it in November.

That's sane. It's a midwinter celebration. Starting in November and stopping a week after midwinter makes no sense.

So glad it's nearly over, just a few more days

It's far from over. It only began yesterday. It's not over until the feast of the Epiphany on Jan 6th. We got started with Christmas Day yesterday. Spent the day at my daughter's and had such a fun day with the youngest grandchildren. Today, all to our house for another day of celebration and feasting. Tomorrow, at my sister in law's for more. Family night out on Monday....and so on.

Over? Not by a long chalk.

Yes. The solstice celebrations are over. You can really see the stretch in the evenings now. Though it's not really over until the New Year.

Surely Christmas continues until Candlemas, though I imagine the tree would be a tad scruffy by then!

Well it starts when its not Christmas so it might as well end when it is Christmas.

Watch how the neighbours who had their decorations up first in November will have them down or switched off before January 6.

Because it's a volunteer radio station run by people who's aim is to make as much money for that year's charity and they obviously feel they won't make enough money to make it worth it for these last 10 days of Christmas.

Well, Christmas is not over for me yet. It's a time of year, more than just a single day.

I won't be taking my tree down until the 6th January.

One of the reasons I love living on the continent - ye lot are knackered before the party season really kicks off! :D

We've still got all the bright lights, Christmas booze and chocolate (and some toys) still being sold at full price, we'll be celebrating the arrival of the Magi for about a fortnight after the 6th, depending on where you go, and there'll be Santas hanging from windowsills until well into February.

Mind you, this year the weather's a bit mad - so flippin' hot I haven't even got the heating on tonight. Second-warmest Christmas day since records began, so they said this morning.

I do not have the decorations down until the 6th of January as Christmas for me is only beginning. It's a nice thing to have them up until then.

At my age I cannot rely on that! And I hate the October stuff and ignore it! Liturgically we celebrate the old 40 days of Christmas anyways here. Is just am tired and sick and the weather! The glitz of the last week supported this year... ah well!

When I was new in Ireland I wondered why the decorations were still up in some churches in late January. When I asked, no one knew; just that they did that so then I looked it up....

Ah my good boardsies! I am just ill and very tired this year is all, Age takes getting used to and this year has been hard. I leaned on the pre Christmas buzz more than I have ever done in my life and am paying for that now. Ah well! THANK YOU all for being here. Resting today but the weather ahead is terrible.. need time away from the house. Onwards! Lights MUSIC! ACTION!

Kind of appropriate, given that most scholars agree that he was born at the end of fecking September.

Now, when did Christianity arrive again?
