Was in my local Aldi (Kilkenny) there now, nothing reduced and shelves still full of Turkeys.

They'll have to reduce them at some point or they'll sell nothing. Got a lovely fresh turkey for a tenner in Lidl instead.

Reductions are taken at the till.. The price label on the turkey shows the full price but if you look along the bottom of the shelf it says 50% of all fresh turkeys. It's written very Christmassy and can easily miss it!! Took me three times to go back and realise it then..

Oh! Well I definitely didn't notice that, and neither did anybody else by the looks of things!

My tesco make announcements over the intercom of reductions, like "all turkeys 50% off at the till". In the last hour it can keep getting better and better reductions.

So it might pay to put one in your trolley straight away and slowly do your shop in the hope of further reductions.

I am pretty sure tesco always had plenty of frozen turkeys too, which do not get reduced, but makes it worth the gamble if you have to have a turkey and all the fresh ones are grabbed.

No turkeys left in aldi but they are reducing all breads by 30%, cakes by 50%and any meat dated from the 27th or before by 50%. If you have freezer space I recommend dropping in.

I just got 2 large chickens, a spatchcock chicken, 2 packs of chicken breasts and fillets of salmon for half price. Great value!

    Edit: this is aldi celbridge

Be warned, a lot of the remaining stocks in Aldi are very short dated.... Turkey crowns I saw this AM were bb 26.12

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,875 ✭✭✭kn

A lot of Turkey Salmon etc now 75% off since about 2pm. I cleared them out on the boned rolled dressed and stuffed turkey at €3.75, sides of salmon for €2.25 and packs of organic salmon for €3.25.

You have to have space in the freezer though as they dated BB the 27th.

Got some seriously good deals in Aldi Nenagh on Sirloin/Striploin beef joints 28 days matured ( half price + 30% off), Sides of Salmon, half price large hams and Turkeys. Plus used 2x €20 newspaper vouchers.
The freezer is full until next Christmas!!

They had jumbo 2.2kg chickens for €2.79. Dates on them were 28 Dec. This was in the Coolock branch. All the turkeys and hams were gone by the time I was there, about 1:30 pm.

Lots would be planning to eat it at a later date. Many people dislike turkey so much they might not even consider this! thinking who in their right mind would suffer it more than once a year...

But also I would not touch a turkey (or chicken or fish) with a use by date just 1 day off when I plan to eat it.

Aldis facebook page has quite a few complaints, these are all different people

    https://www.facebook.com/AldiIreland/
My mother was sold a rank "fresh" Turkey by Aldi for €23.99 two days before Christmas. Totally ruined Christmas Day. Poor woman went to get refund this morning (30 mile round trip), only to discover that Aldi is not even open despite checking the aldi.ie website last night for opening times. stating 9am-9pm. - mugged over twice by Aldi at Christmas. This is what it is still stating on Aldi.ie when I type in my local store
Happy Christmas to you too Aldi, unfortunately my Christmas dinner is destoryed.

I bought what I thought would be a good quality fresh Irish Turkey from your store during the week and when I opened it this morning to prepare dinner for our family and our guests, the Turkey was rotten.

It's still well in date, obviously, would you please contact me about this.

    Happy Christmas.

    Lisa.
Just wanted to write the same thing, my Turkey was rotten too!!! Thanks for spoiling our dinner, we have family from abroad. What a big disappointment? are you trying top kill customers? Standards in your shop have dropped to new LOW. I think its time for a legal advice.
well that was my Christmas dinner ruined to thanks to the farm fresh turkey from Aldi, nothing on it, no turkey whatsever, wouldnt even feed 3 people not alone that I had 6 here. Never so disappointed as they were always good before but disaster this year.

You get what you pay for, bought one from there once never again, will be fresh from the butchers every year just like this years.

Although leaving the bird in the bag will cause it to go off much quicker than if it was removed from it on day of purchase.

Our's turned out just fine though of course it has much more to do with the cook than the bird ;)

+1 ours was delicious and no difference in the butchers one we got last year. There's limited turkey farms in Ireland so a good chance that the butcher is ordering from the same place - IF they're even stocking Irish turkey because some don't.

The complaint about not enough meat is their own fault for not buying a bigger turkey?!

Poor hygene/handling seems to be the problem for the rotting ones where people left it in its packaging until Christmas morning?

How can you blame the buyer because they left it in the bag.You buy it in a bag regardless what day you buy it be it 22nd ,23rd 24th.So someone who buys a turkey on the 22nd and takes it out of the bag has a fresher turkey than someone who buys a turkey on the 24th even if the best before dates are the same.

Like most food stuffs of they're in a bag for a longer period of time they "sweat" which increases the likelihood of them going off.

Ours was perfect. Tons of meat, very happy

Regarding turkeys going off, i'm a big fan of aldi and shop there every week, but I often find that their chicken, especially the breasts, goes off before the BB date. I don't know if they're being too generous with their dates or if those big open fronted fridges aren't up to the job or what it is. Never seems to happen with other meats, but could be a factor with these turkeys.

Our turkey was off as well - not bought in Aldi but another major supermarket. Was dated use by 27/12, I left it in the bag - there's nothing on the packaging to say take it out; as others have said the same turkeys were being sold on Xmas Eve still in their bags.

However in future I definitely will open the bag in advance to make sure its ok - fortunately we had plenty of other meat but it was still very annoying. The supermarket in question was very apologetic and offered reasonable compensation (hence I'm not naming them).

Strange that so many people seem to have had the same issue - hygiene problems on one particular farm/processor perhaps?

Its the same with any meat you buy - you take it out of the bag asap to stop it going off. We got ours on the 23rd and took it out of the packaging straight away and no problems.

I think it was the timing - they were selling them on the 20th possibly to have them for weekend shoppers but it was too early?

Wasn't my Turkey, but it was cooked and then lefted out for a few hours. They came home and the kitchen was stinking. No one was sick either but it had to be chucked out. Fairly sure it was bought in Aldi also.

Well there's a total shocker, who in their right mind would have guessed that the majority sold were not rotten...

In my tesco I have seen huge amounts of stuff left out awaiting to be put in fridges. You could tell stuff had defrosted and was refrozen. Also the fridges are not particularly cold, which is a huge factor, they are those open fridges. I cannot drink milk straight off the shelf in my local tesco, while in lidl I have gotten brain freeze from the milk.

When setting dates they will expect a certain level of refrigeration. If big turkeys are piled on top of each other in open fridges it is quite possibly at a higher temp than recommended. I only buy chicken well in date in tesco now, and eat it well before the use by too. If you buy it and the date is 1 week away and you stick it in your decent home fridge then it is going to be a lot better off. Bacterial growth is typically exponential with rising temperatures.

Would you do this with beef mince? or pork chops? Most fridges will dry out meat to some degree. Some do this on purpose.

I do it with any meat. My dogs are raw fed so I'm well used to storing meat and getting my money's worth out of it ;)

it has been unusually warm this December with temperatures above 10C for days on end, it must reduce the margin for error compared with previous years. I can't believe leaving the bird in it's bag alone is enough to cause it to spoil - it must have been mishandled in some way earlier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,337 ✭✭✭lazeedaisy

I would never ever buy meat of any sort in Tesco, not even for the dogs!

I'd say the issue was with turkeys that were bought a day or two before Christmas. These would have been sitting in their bags for several days in Aldi stores in those useless open fridges. Can't understand why they don't use proper fridges for their raw meat like Lidl do.

I bought my turkey in Aldi the day it came in and then stored it in a fridge set to the proper temperature still in its bag until Christmas Eve (when I halved it and froze one half) and it was perfectly fresh Christmas Day.

Indeed it said on the packaging to use within 24 or 48 hours of removal from the bag so I'm a bit perplexed about that.

Given the volume of fridge space occupied by an 8lb+ bird the temptation to give over the chill space to other things and to leave it out wrapped even for 12-18 hours over night in a heated kitchen is strong. Many larger birds won't fit without removing fridge shelves. Fadó, a genuinely cold kitchen/pantry coped with short term external storage for a few days.
