Switching to heavier weights

Hi all, hope someone can advise me on something.
I'm female, late twenties and I joined the gym 6 months ago.
Three stone gone, healthy eating, etc etc.

When I joined the gym and started doing weights, I started with 5kg weights for my arm exercises.
    I'd do 2 sets of 16 reps.
That was grand. After a little while, I switched to 6kg.
A gym instructor advised me to do 9-10 reps each with the 6kg.

Now today I've switched to 7kg weights and I'm just wondering how many reps would be advisable?
There was no-one around I could ask today and I thought maybe someone here might know.

Is it just "Do as many as you can tolerate?" or should there be a recommended amount?

    Thanks in advance!

Stay with 9-10 reps. If you find it easy to complete, or if you are able to do say 12+ on the last set. Then you should increase to 8kg imo.
