Graphs showing the differences of average rainfall and sunshine and mean temperatures (max and min) of each half of each month in 2015. Thus -60 is 40% of the LTA.

The second half of December goes from 16th-18th so far.

In Britain, 2015 did a number on the record book. CET daily records go back to 1772 and before this year, the record number of consecutive record highs was seven in 1976 (28 June to 4 July). This year inserted a new record for the 1st of July into the middle of that spell, leaving the record at four days (28-31 July 1948). That means that if five consecutive records are set this month (as may happen this week), the first of July will have set the stage for this year to take over the record.

Six consecutive minimum records were set in January of 1776 (last six days of that month). So that's the absolute record in play.

As to 2015 in Ireland, I would say that it was a fairly unremarkable year until the past six weeks, the last two months of the year may turn out to be the warmest combined Nov-Dec and this month could be the warmest December. The main feature of the first ten months was probably the lack of extremes of most kinds.

    Sunniest April on record though!

I think it was the second coldest Summer in the Northwest of Ireland in 50 years

Had my highest 36 hr rainfall total from Desmond in Sligo of 94mm

Newport had over 100mm 36 hr rainfall around September 12/13

Claremorris had 110.7mm from Desmond in 40 hrs

Had my lowest summer high since starting recording in 2006 of 22.5c

Had fewest hours frost before December 18th since starting records 2006

And to finish heres a made up one

Most hours in calendar year of temperature being at 14c.

Yesterday I recorded my second highest December temperature on record with 15.8c and my highest for this December so far.

Only thing that I will really remember about this year is the very pleasant April. As can be seen in the graph, it was Ireland's sunniest April on record beating 2007.

At my location at 220m asl in Kilkenny
    Highest temperature 24.8C - 1st July
    Lowest temperature -3.4C - 4th February.
    Lowest Maximum 1.6C
    Highest minimum 13.9C

Highest wind gust 95km/hr 17th November.
Highest sustained wind 47km/hr 12th November
    Windiest day December 5th

No surprise December is the wettest month 121mm so far
    December 4th wettest day 27.2mm

    Highest pressure 1042.47 February 8th
    Lowest pressure 971.22 January 14th.

Warmest temperature this month was 12.8C with a lowest minimum of 10.1C, the elevation in the winter has a bigger effect on temps than in the summer in particular for max temps.

Wow thats a very low average rainfall at 689mm?
Id have thought 833mm was more or less average for Dublin?
Though I'm only familiar with rainfall the higher parts of South Dublin near the mountains.

Sunshine totals so far for 2015 confirmed

    Above average sunshine months

January: 94 hours (229%) - sunniest January on record
    February: 81 hours (116%)
    March: 138 hours (150%)
April: 244 hours (167%) - sunniest April on record
    June: 198 hours (112%)
    August: 146 hours (115%)
    September: 165 hours (140%)
    October: 93 hours (106%)

    Below average sunshine months

    May: 147 hours (82%)
    July: 110 hours (67%)

December: 34 hours (76%) - these last few days have brought it up that high!

September and December might come as a big contrast to most stations across Ireland! 2014 will be definitely sunnier than 2015 however.

Actually it's 649mm - my annual average. My place's annual total is largely due to:

*Extremely rare very wet months (months of 160mm or more)
*I get an average of at least 2 very dry months every year (months of 20mm or less)

I have records from the council going back to 1969 and this year has been the wettest by far in 46 years, according to some of the older workers, it is probably the wettest since the 40's, Castlebar has gone over the 2000mm mark as well today.

Do you have any records from 2007 or 2008?
I remember those summers being very wet, but then I suspect the rest of those years might not have been wet.
I moved from Dublin to Galway in 2008 and the rainfall didnt seem much different, probably because Dublin was going through a wet spell at that time.
But in the last year I can really see how Galway is wet in contrast to Dublin.

According to statistics, this has been my wettest November-December period on record already with a total of 281.2mm up to December 23rd.

Not a remarkable year weather wise at my station but this month has easily been the wettest since i started recording data back in October 2010. The total stands at 240.3mm which smashed the previous Max of 202mm in Feb. 2014.

I am ready to confirm that 2015 will DEFINITELY be by the 31st, Grange's:

    Sixth wettest year on record
    Twelfth coolest year on record
    Fifth sunniest year on record

Overall, not remarkable, but the devil is in the detail!

I definitely am . In October, I recorded only 6 wet days - compared to other parts of Ireland.

Grange's wettest month on record could potentially be beaten after this coming Wednesday's deluge. My current record for wettest month is 194.0mm in October 2011.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,509 ✭✭✭✭sryanbruen

Yes. I have a new wettest month on record.

December 2015 with 201.8mm (336% of the LTA)

2015 meanwhile has risen to become my third wettest year on record (behind 2012 and 2002) and slightly ahead of 2008 by a small margin.

I have recorded 54% of my rainfall though only in May, November and December (added together alone).

I'm curious about the wind this year - how does it compare with previous years on average?

2015 has been a windier year than 2014. It was definitely much more windier than 2013. In my records, 2015 also broke the record for windiest year.

January - 3rd windiest in my records
February - 6th windiest in my records
March - 4th windiest in my records
April - 4th calmest in my records
May - 3rd windiest in my records
June - 2nd windiest in my records
July - 3rd windiest in my records
August - 4th windiest in my records
September - 3rd windiest in my records
October - 5th calmest in my records
November - 2nd windiest in my records
December - 2nd windiest in my records

I have never had 10 windier than normal months before in any year. I didn't break any individual monthly wind records though which is very remarkable.

Does low lying northern facing Howth (the harbour) got its own micro climate. I arrived for a walk there during a summer storm, where we felt we would take the measure of the storm while in Howth. The storm was driven by southerly winds but it was calm at the dart station and drizzle. So we trekked on.

We started to climb via the tram line and it was very stormy and wet at the summit, then calm at the dart station again. Dublin centre was windy and wet too but not like the summit. Could be a small rain shadow.

I am very surprised though at Cork Airport recording 366.5mm up to the 29th December of this month. This is surely, its wettest month on record!
