I'm in 6th year and I moved here when I was like 7 from Scotland. Ive always been told I can't get an exemption from studying Irish because I moved here before 11. I'm doing ordinary level and I'm absolutely awful at it. I was reading online that I can apply for an NUI exemption because I wasn't born in Ireland. Is this true that I wouldn't need it as a subject to get into college and also if I didn't do the exam or failed it would that matter or affect my leaving cert results in anyway? Ie if I failed it or didn't do the exam would I then fail the lc. Thanks

What you have heard is true. You cannot be exempt from attending Irish classes, but you qualify for the NUI exemption and it should not affect your chances of getting a course, apart from an Irish or primary teaching course.

Your careers guidance person should have more info. If you sit no part of the Irish exam, written, oral or aural, it will not appear on your results sheet.

If you achieve a minimum of five passes at any level in the LC, you are considered to have your Leaving Certificate, Irish does not have to be one of the subjects.
