Urgh, Fairytale of New York takes all five spots. I worked the night shift in Dunnes one Christmas about twelve years ago and that always played every three songs. I never liked it anyway, but it brings a murderous rage out in me now due to flashbacks of facing off effing apples!

    Merry Christmas everyone. Slade.
    So this is Christmas. Lennon.
    Mistletoe & Wine c Richard.

I like the songs on the OP's sh1t list.

In particular I think Chris rea is given a hard time. Fairytale is over played but a classic.

God, yous are a terrible bunch of cynics. I find most of above OK in small doses. Mind you, there is some awful saccharine dirge by Cliff Richards that I can't recall the name of and have no wish to look up!

The world would be a better place without any (or preferably all) of the following:

When a Child is Born - Johnny Mathis
Driving Home for Christmas - Chris Rea
    Wonderful Christmastime - Paul McCartney
A Spacemen Came Travelling - Chris de Burgh
Anything Christmas related by Cliff Richard

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,062 ✭✭✭✭anewme

    War is over john Lennon
Wonderful Christmas time Paul mc cartney

But the worst EVER song has to be
Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses.....evil monotone rubbish, if I hear it in a shop I'll start ranting and fn n and blinding to myself like I've got bad Tourette's and then have to leave

I like almost all Christmas songs, but Fairytale of New York needs to be taken out back and shot repeatedly at this stage. Absolutely loathe it.

Mistletoe and Wine would also be on my list...

I love Chris Rea though. S'probably my favourite Christmas song. :o

Fairytale of New York is depressing as ****, don't like it at all

Driving Home for Christmas, I used to like but it's way overplayed like the above

Santa Claus is Coming to Town by Bruce Springsteen drags on and I just don't like Bruce in general tbh

Feliz Navidad is one I used to like for novelty purposes but hate hearing it now

Christmas FM aside, I listen to TodayFM, 98fm and Beat102-103 and there isn't enough of the old US crooners like Sinatra, Crosby and Martin being played. TodayFM in particular seem to have a hard-on for 'Fairytale' which I thought would be gone when Ray D'Arcy left but it has continued unfortunately.

Fairytale of New York is by far my favourite. It's an emigrants lament and a love song. It's a lyrical masterpiece ffs... And shouldn't be categorised solely as a Christmas song.

"I kept them with me babe, I put them with my own, can't make it all alone, I've built my dreams all around you"

Ah ya a depressing dirge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,495 ✭✭✭✭eviltwin

If you think the Pogues version of Fairytale of NY is bad you should hear Ronan Keatings version.

On second thoughts do your ears a favour and don't

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,360 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

This is a difficult one for me. Many of the Christmas songs I can't stand are because they are over-played. There are many that I just find to be bland. To me it is an impossible task. Sometimes I find myself getting into a frame of mind where I appreciate a song that I thought I did not like!

I will admit to at least one which I absolutely cannot stand - Step Into Christmas by Elton John.

It might be relevant to look at this thread (ahem!):

I agree 1000%. If I even hear it come on in a shopping centre or shop I instantly feel like walking out. The most repetitive, non festive piece of trolling audio-**** ever unleashed.

Happy Xmas (War is Over) - John Lennon
    Mary's Boy Child - Boney M

Mistletoe and Wine - Cliff Richard
Do They Know it's Christmas - Band Aid

The real reason is the X-factor. Bands used to challenge themselves to have a Christmas no 1. ( that's in love actually for instance).

Along comes xfactor and there's no hope.

Jebus, thanks for that. It's superb, and it emphasises the mystical aspect of the song.
It does show what a great song it actually is.

No bother pal....for all the christmas song haters, maybe your just listening to the wrong songs..theres heaps of good bands christmas song attempts youre not going to hear on irish daytime radio...

I can only think of two. Most of the above are great.

Peter Kay - Once Upon A Christmas Song

Justin Bieber - Mistletoe? (At least I think that's what it's called)

Very much overplayed and over requested on Christmas FM. Whatever about other Christmas songs being played over and over, but this one seems to be requested a LOT.
