Should fast food restaurants in Ireland be allowed to sell alcohol ?

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/foodanddrinknews/12025173/Burger-King-to-sell-alcohol-in-the-UK.html

A Suffolk branch of Burger King has been granted a licence to sell alcohol - despite objections from local police.

The restaurant, in Bury St Edmunds’ St Andrew's Street, applied for permission to serve drinks from 10am till 11pm seven days a week.

However, local licensing inspector Matt Dee raised concerns with Suffolk council that the burger chain would be ill-equipped to deal with the ramifications, saying: "Other night-time economies [in Bury] have door staff, CCTV, substantial staff training and policies for identifying underage customers."

He added: "The applicant would be free to sell strong spirits in its current application format which the constabulary deem inappropriate for the type of premises and lack of safeguarding.”

Under the terms of the licence granted by the council, the restaurant will be able to serve only one beer per adult up until 9pm, with no drink permitted outside.

Burger King launches UK delivery service
The restaurant chain, founded in Florida in 1953, plans to sell plastic bottles of American beer to be drunk on its premises, according to a recent Mail report.
CPL Foods, Burger King’ parent company, is also seeking permission to sell alcohol at branches in Blackpool, Hull and Newcastle-under-Lyme. If the trial is successful, it may seek to introduce alcohol at more of its 654 UK outlets

They already do. BK already sells pissy bud I think it is in the airport. Others will deliver wine or beer with your meal.

I think it's a good idea, half the reason there's alcohol problems in this country is the lack of availability of it, it needs to be normalised and also available in every grocery shop. I can't think of any country on earth that sells alcohol in Burger King and/or McDonalds that has a bad an alcohol problem as we have.

If they are going to sell Alochol in their Irish branches they would have to put bouncers on the door to keep out all the Scumbags.

Exactly, it doesn't get any better than that.

I'd love for the currently 9 and counting people who said no give a reason why.

Why can't I have a beer with my XL bacon double cheeseburger? Its not like they are opening a cocktail bar and 9 year olds will be dipping their chips in shots of blue wkd.

As another poster said, alcohol in Ireland needs to be normalised.

Go into most fastfood places after about 9 o'clock and they do have do security personnel. City centre venues have it round the clock.

Will be interesting to see how far they go with this idea. Will there be a wine list/selection of craft beers or will they be conservative & just stick with Bud?

Well, will it keep the kids out of the pub?

It will attract alot of Scumbags into Burger King. Instead of drinking on the broadwalk the Scumbags would start hanging around in Burger King.

You would also get them bringing in their own cans and drinking them under the table.

What's to stop them bringing in booze as it is? Relatively simple matter to have a sneaky naggin to top up your mineral.

You could ask the same of any pub. More so because people don't tend to sit in Burgerking for hours.

it works in other countries...so of course Irish people presume it could never work here.
lets stick to our current approach to dealing with alcohol. increase prices and decrease availability. because that approach is having stellar results.

Other countires don't have the same drinking culture we have.

If you want to see real drinking culture take a trip over to Eastern Europe. They'd put us to shame with the way they do it.

A big NO from me, Can you imagine Supermacs on a saturday night in Thurles, God forbid its bad enough but selling alcohol in fast food restaurants is looking for trouble.

that's a lazy cliché which will only result in us changing nothing.

if you have a problem with what I said, propose a solution instead of just shooting it down.

good - families and kids would then "have to" choose healthier food options

Whats preventing scumbags hanging out in Burger King as it is? In the case of O'Connell Street, the round the clock security.

A beer and a burger is nice during the warm season.

For the likes of Santa Ponsa yes to alcohol with your whopper, but not in Cold Dublin :D

They already sell it in a number of UK airports including Belfast.

Was there a point to this thread?

Yes, Alcohol bad. Alcohol should be in the firm Grip of the Publicans and they should charge more for it. You know for our own protection. :pac:

My Dad says whenever you try to do anything in Ireland a committee forms to try and stop you. I think the point of this thread was to aide with the organising of the committee.

Just what we need in Ireland, the perfect addition for chipper violence at 3am . . . some more beer and glass.

If you had 24hr selling and pubs this would not be an issue. It's the mad rush to get locked and all meeting up at the same time after that is the problem. Ireland has constantly fostered a binge drinking culture though expense and stupid selling hours. If price had an effect we would be a dry country by now due to having the highest cost in the EZ/EU. And I don't believe the Irish drunk problem the politicians are the only ones peddling that stereotype. Ireland is in the middle of European consumption.

Not just Burger King, but everywhere should be able to sell at whatever time they like. Overhaul our fuccking idiotic licensing laws.

I want to enjoy Spätis here. Make drinking in public legal while we're at it.

No, I'm not joking, I'm being 100% serious. I'm sick of being treated like a fuccking child.

They should concentrate on getting milkshakes in all the branches first.
The disappointment when they hit you with that news in some of the BK's, it's nearly on par with a kick in the testes.

I normally chow down on my Burger King at the end of the night after my beer. I like the dividing line between the two events. Beer in Burger King is going to confuse that line. I am afraid that I would be drunk and ordering a bottle of Bud to go with my burger. The horror...the horror....

No because some of ye can't be trusted to keep things in order in a decent civilised way. We have enough problems with alcohol in Ireland enough is enough now no more leeway

Can you define "fast food restaurant"? Is it speed of service? or price? etc

Eddie rockets already do, or did.

and by "allowed" are you talking of the same think in your quote "serve only one beer per adult up until 9pm"

I'd rather encounter a gang of scumbags who were drinking & eating, than a scumbags drinking on an empty stomach.

The should also sell it in the accident and emergency waiting rooms, just in case someone fancies a beer when they are waiting to get stitched up like.

If you can buy a burger in a pub ( which you can ) then I don't see why you can't buy a beer is a burger joint.
