Middle aged women on the train.

I'm on the limerick to Dublin train and the carriage is packed.

But there is 6 middle aged women being very loud and obnoxious as they are taking up 2 tables and having a conversation across the 2 tables.
While they don't think they were antisocial, the passive aggressive glares from the people in my vicinity said otherwise.

So I asked could they not be as loud, like the people's hero.
One turned around and asked was I for real.
I asked was she a teenager.

So, am I just a cranky old man or what do you when there is gowls on public transport?

That Middle Aged cackle is going through my skull. Would they find it antisocial if I didn't wear headphones?

Its public transport. What do you expect? Middle aged women can be incredibly ignorant with an awful sense of entitlement.

Every instance of interruptive behaviour I have seen in civilised places like cafés or restaurants has been by these type of women.

What do I expect, people to cop on and not be oblivious to other people stuck sitting next to you.

What would they say if I sat at their table and cracked open cans and didn't use ear phones?
They would be the first to tut me.

Join in on their conversation, start by laughing when they laugh, then build up to a really uncomfortable story about your bowels during the last train journey you were on.
Noting like a bowels story to shut people up.

    @ the OP

For my money, too many Irish people lack finesse, self-confidence and even basic manners, with no real sense of how to behave in public. It doesn't matter if you're on a train, in a cafe, restaurant or at the cinema or theatre, or even in a bookshop. There's always a loudmouth, or moron on a mobile phone, projecting his /her inadequacy into the space of others.

On the flip side, not enough Irish people have the character or guts to challenge boors. So good on you for getting your spake in.

It probably doesn't annoy you so to be on a train journey with a group of people being extremely shouty and screechy. I think it's a reasonable thing to be annoyed by though - it's distracting and unnecessary for the other passengers in their vicinity.
Really can't abide inappropriately loud people.

    Controversial opinion.

Having a loud conversation across the train and being so entitled you don't care about other people being annoyed because of your actions is ok?
I would happily tell you piss off on a train or bus or wherever, how would you react?

I didn't even mention them passing remarks about me.

Personally, I enjoy the sound of people conversing in public. I like to eavesdrop on their conversation and then mimic them in my own head always makes the journey shorter. Try this technique op. haha

Yeah, you should ALWAYS use ear phones when opening cans. Height of rudeness not to.

It's just a little bit harsh to tar all middle-aged women with the one brush. My Mum is a middle aged women, and has never once in my entire life raised her voice in my hearing.

If someone made sweeping generalisations about men there would a platoon of posters with their tails up at the injustice of it all.

My girlfriend was in a similar situation a while back on a bus. She said to a pair of rough oul ones to keep it down that they were giving her a head ache. They told her to fcuk off and my her business and that its a free country and all that guff. So herself also has this fantastic ability which is to fart at will. As she walked past them in the aisle she nearly deafened the one on the outside farting as close to her ear as possible. A few people roared laughing but the driver was not much impressed. that will learn them.

That would be harsh, but nobody has really done that, even the Op has clearly said in his experience it has always been this demographic. No harm to make a disclaimer post before things do inevitably take off though I suppose!

Op, can you not move seat? Ignore them? You know, the normal things people do in situations like you've described.

I don't get it? You seem annoyed that they're taking up two tables but there's 6 of them so what do you expect, 2 of them to sit on their laps? And you say they're talking across the carriage, they're obviously not unless they've gotten tables at opposite ends of the train? So your problem is that they're loud and obnoxious, and instead of keeping the cool you get smart with her when she gets narky with you?

Fair enough, those kinds of people are annoying but you could have approached it better and then IF they still don't keep the noise down you could get pissed off.

Fixed that for you. We've all been annoyed by screechy hen parties, drunken schoolboys, cranky old men, at-the-top-of-their-voices Africans, sarcastic eastern Europeans, braying English, multifamilial Travellers, obnoxious Americans, upper-class twats, etc, etc. Earphones and a good film or the radio on the computer/tablet/phone is the answer.

So pretty much beside (or opposite depending on how you want to look at it) each other? I haven't been on a train in a few years but I assume the tables still only sit 4?

I was watching a movie with headphones and I could still hear them.

Then they got all uppity and were passing remarks like I'm young enough to be their son.

Yes. Obviously. So they had 2 tables. Becuase there was 6 and were talking to a guy who sat beside the 2

It dosent make a difference how many were there or the seating arrangements.
Loud obnoxious people should be called up for it.

I would have gotten too annoyed and said something i probably shouldn't if I had.
They were looking for a rise at that stage.

Ring a naughty phone number and put it on speaker.
Or start barking loudly at irregular intervals.
    And the nuclear option:
Lots of beery farts as you pass their group.

How dare they interrupt your private cinematic viewing time!

Need to go to Dublin airport at 6 am on Tuesday, that's a breeding ground for these people.

    This seems pretty straightforward.

Hearing an ordinary conversation on the train, regardless of quality, is an expected hazard of being on the train. As stated some people like half-listening in to the conversations. I'm not much of a conversationalist, but I think I'd miss it if everyone just sat in silence. You can always put on headphones.

Being loud and engaging in cackling laughter and having a conversation over two tables is overboard and imo rude, depending on the situation.

I would be lying if I said loud middle aged women, loud middle aged men, loud young people, loud old people, loud yanks, Spanish students or crying babies (etc.) don't annoy me but it's not something I would say is a reasonable annoyance. Rain in November also annoys me.

These things are facts of life. I don't think that there are concepts of quiet carriages in Irish rail. Maybe petition for that.
