Do the CDKeys keys last 12 months from purchase, or are they occasionally near expiry date?

There's no expiration date as far as I know. I activated my first gold subscription a few months after I bought the code.

I think they do (there's normally an expiry date on the rear of the physical cards) but hopefully it's for a few years yet.

If no good Games with Gold appear by Feb/Mar I'll probably sell it on for the price I bought it if anyone wants it.

although I have been meaning to get back into Split/Second online... damn near spent a year playing that online.

Good to know about the expiry date, although I dont think someone will hold on to them for such a long time.

As for your reluctance to activate it, I'd say go for it, you'll be pleasantly surprised by how good some of the older games are. We do own quite a few games, but the latest one with gold, Knight Squad is pretty addictive, my girls almost forgot about their Minecraft and Just dance.

For the sake of €26, I'd say give it a go, you wont regret it

Only the current.

Incidentally regarding expiry date of the codes I found several twitter posts by them saying they DON'T expire.. e.g. https://twitter.com/cdkeyscom/status/644789170448285696

So happy days... I'm spending most of my time on the WiiU at the mo so don't want to waste valuable Xbox Live time until I'm ready to use it (or see a game I always wanted on Games with Gold).

Happy that Xbox360 games can still be kept forever even after your sub ends. Hope there are no plans to change this.
