While I agree that alcohol can certainly have negative effects I think they've erred here in calling it the most dangerous by looking at its absolute effects on users/society as a whole rather than relative to the actual number of users. The fact that alcohol is probably far & away the most popular mind altering substance used in Western society means that any negative consequences from it are going to be widespread.

In order to have a better measure of the harm caused by alcohol as opposed to other drugs one should surely look at how the average user interacts with it & what proportion of users end up with negative results. For instance what proportion of regular alcohol users are unable to hold a job/course as a result of their usage? How does this compare to users of heroin or cocaine?
What proportion (not number) of alchol users suffer fatal or near fatal overdoses each year? How does this compare to users of other drugs? Would a population which used crystal meth as its drug of choice in the same numbers as Western society does alcohol expect better or worse outcomes based on projections from current usage effects?
Looking at absolute numbers with regard to popular drugs like alcohol doesn't really tell you a huge amount, unless you're simply trying to prove that it can be harmful, something acknowledged for decades anyway.

If you want to discuss a "dangerous" drug in the classical sense then yes heroin or cocaine will be at the top of the list.

If you want to analyse the data around what is the most lethal addictive substance to society then sugar is the clear winner.

How many people take illegal drugs as a % of society and have long term implications? Feck All!
How many people as a % of society will have a bmi of over 30 by 2030? Plenty!

We need to define exactly what the word "dangerous" really means.

Fair play but that doesn't make alcohol the most dangerous drug of all without a shadow of a doubt. Alcohol is very much a substance whose danger depends on the user.

I'd assume crystal meth is one of the top of the list ones.
