What do you think of incest?

This is a topic I think about regularly, and I don't know how I feel about it. On one hand the idea of someone being in a sexual relationship with their cousin disgusts me, but on the other hand, me being from Mayo (it seems to be more common here than elsewhere), I've seen several such relationships being very successful and wonder if there really is anything wrong with incestuous relationships.

What does AH think? Would you give it a go?

Call me old fashioned, but I prefer Trivial Pursuit or Monopoly.

I wouldn't give it a go, no. Though I personally feel revulsion about siblings or a parent and adult child being together, if they are consenting adults who enter into a relationship without any grooming or coercion then I really can't find a logical reason to object and I don't think it should be illegal.

I feel a lot of sympathy for people who are united or reunited with relatives later in life and they fall in love, it's called genetic sexual attraction and it seems to be quite a strong and overwhelming feeling, and I definitely think that those people should not be jailed or penalised for their relationships.

I know that some people will argue that if these people have children then there is a risk of disability, but many people who are not related have children even though they are aware that the child has a high or definite risk of disability so I don't believe that is a strong enough argument against incest on its own.

AH answer: incest is best, so put your sister to the test! :p

It's not just that the individual gets a disability (and the disability can range from obvious life destroying disabilities to minor things like intolerances) but it affirms errors in DNA, these errors may not affect the child of the people that are riding their cousins, but it would be contributing to a build up of shyte DNA on our island.

We're probably quite inbreed as it is being on a small island that's had it's population gouged on numerous occasions in the past.

Really we should be welcoming foreign DNA onto our island and we should be pairing off with foreigners to get that exotic DNA into our population. We need the top up.

Good point. Unlike Trivial Pursuit, Monopoly and incest, Connect 4 never results in a family fight.

On a serious note, there is a reason for a societal prohibition on incest.
This can intensify genetic defects, etc:

I've occasionally seen offspring of first-cousin marriages that turned out "not quite the brightest" if you understand me.
"Marrying out" brings in fresh genes and hybrid vigour.

It is probably the reasoning behind all those Raids in mythology where they capture the foreign women!

kayleigh all joking aside i infact do know someone who went out with there cousin,it wasnt a long lost cousin,or some cousin she never seen, they started a stint together early in life, they grew up together, when they did reach adult hood they were just meeting for the bit of nookie as they say..so take from that what ya want, everyone has an opinion, but i do know it destroyed her life in many many ways, took her years to get out of the situation, and will take her years to or the rest of her life to hide the situation, from the many that dont know about it...

may be over estimated though for cousins:

certainly between siblings is a no no though

It's legal to marry your first cousin in Ireland. I know a married couple who are cousins.

Personally I'd never do it and think incest is vile.

I feel extremely sorry for siblings separated at birth who end up in a relationship in later life. It's very rare but I feel very sorry for them

    And now for the filth..

I know it's wrong and God will punish me but twin sisters in porn is hot.

Sandra Romain and Alice Romain (not twins) made a movie called 'Romains Of The Day' but the production company, Brazzers, chickened out and won't release it. Damn them.

Otherwise though, incest is bad and down with that sort of thing.

    ... Twincest

Seriously though, it's not really something I ever think about and not sure why anyone would? I do know a lady in her 60's who's parents were cousins. I assume marrying cousins and second cousins would have been common-ish back in the day in rural areas.

    *getting personal*
I've been in a few villages in the midlands where everyone in the pub looked the same. And they didn't strike me as Mastermind material, either, sorry.

In island populations, certain traits may intensify while others fade out. Even so, there are always island stories of the man who married a woman from the mainland, or a seal-woman, etc - it is clearly a recurring preoccupation.
It also explains why simple societies set great store by family history and genealogy onto the umth generation; Some can recite the names of all their ancestors for generations back.
It is so that potential too-close pairings can be avoided.
Even now, the use of surnames, "patronymics" and the Jimín-Mháire-Thadhg type of nicknaming, helps to identify those with common ancestors; so we can see how urgent the interest in this issue continues to be.

Thanks to incest we get programs like the Jeremy Kyle show, a lot of the people on it look like the inbred people from the episode 'home' of the X Files.

There's an app for that...in Iceland anyway, where you can check how related you are before lobbing it in there. Slightly related fact, Iceland plundered Ireland for our women back in Viking times!

Aside from the genetic issues, which often are accumulative over a number a generations, I'd regard many of these relationships as unhealthy. There is generally a power imbalance (especially between parent and offspring, but even between siblings) and the potential for abuse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,779 ✭✭✭Day Lewin

Well, cousins aren't quite so near in as siblings. Unless some of the parents were cousins too (which is also possible...)

But let us not forget, a lot goes on behind the scenes, and not always between the traditional sheets: you may not be so closely related to someone as you think you are... ;-)

And in polygamous societies, the half-sister, half-brother thing must add a whole extra layer of complexity. Half-cousins?

When I first moved here, I had a full physical to qualify for my health insurance policy. Got to chatting with the doc and when he discovered my partner is Irish (I am not) he declared "oh, thank goodness - we need to widen the gene pool here!" I wasn't too sure what to say to that!
