Its near impossible to judge quality based on the lack of specs, but for some reason I doubt this
"Bauhn" brand would be upto the quality standards of known brands.

Similar 40" 4k set a few weeks back. Very poor quality according to buyers.

£300 if anyone is up North.

I think for a good priced 4k tv with better quality is Seiki brand..

A quick google search found this:

    http://www.productreview.com.au/p/bauhn-50-127cm-full-hd.html

It's not reviewing the same TV, but if the manufacturer is that bad, then I'm sure this TV is no different.

And you have to be sitting about 6 feet from the TV to notice the difference... From a standard 8-10 feet, a better quality 1080p display will suit the everyday buyer much more.

Any TV from this brand I've seen have been total garbage - at the bottom of the pile even of the budget brands. As above, a good quality 1080P display will be light years better than this.

I've just finished setting up the tv bought in aldi this week. Apart from not being able to pair my horizon remote, it looks perfect. Good quality picture, no issues with sound. I can't really argue with the 500 paid

How are you getting in with the TV.

There was a few of them in my local aldi today. Did you get the remote sorted?

No, have to use 2 remotes, one for box, other for sound on tv. Other than that, very happy with my purchase

Read a few reviews on the specs of tvs - The folliwing is the 'general' view .

    4K TV
Only useful in a cinema. The effect is not realised in a home. Therefore a waste of money

    CURVED TV
Another waste - not suitable in homes unless the TV is 65"+.
Even at that the viewers must be sitting centre if the screen.

Any Comments on above or other wasteful, pricey tv gadgets not useful in a home ???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 554 ✭✭✭James Delaney

TVs I bought in LIDL OR ALDI always had a problem with the COLOUR(S) dosplayed on screen - The Colours were always FADED !

You'll read different schools of thought regarding 4K tv's, chaps who blog about how they have scientific proof that 4k is of no use. However having sat and watched one for a week in my auntie's house (it was both 4k and curved), I certainly noticed a huge improvement. And the TV I have at home is 55' and very good spec. The resolution and picture were so top notch that watching her TV was similar to watching Sky 3D on my own TV with the 3D glasses on.

Where did you get all that 4k content to watch for a week :D

They bought a bunch of 4K blu rays when they picked up the TV. Would be kind of redundant if they hadn't given the dearth of 4k content readily available.

Brother Tombstone, what 4k TV have you been watching?

These TVs are coming up for sale again this Sunday, 29/05/2016.

Did anyone buy one the last time, and if so, what's your impressions?

It's not even stated if they are LCD or Plasma!

Oh, and they're €100 cheaper this time round, and €399

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 371 ✭✭Catxscotch

I am happy with the TV, good quality picture. Sound isn't great though, and I can't pair it to my horizon/Virgin box. Other than that, it's a good buy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 554 ✭✭✭James Delaney

Best to get the model no. & google for a review.

    I bought a LIDL/ALDI TV a few yrs ago.
Found the colours on screen were faded & sound not good.
I always experienced problems with their entertainment products - so I no longer shop in LIDL / ALDI for them.

Doing some research, seems this TV is most likely made by company called Bauhn. Found their manual online. IF this is the TV in Aldi, I will mention the features it has which Aldi don't mention.

    LCD 60 Hz refresh Rate
    Ethernet port/Wifi
Smart Apps. Web browsing. Looks like no Netflix but it has Youtube. Screen Mirroring.
    PVR recording to USB. Time-shifting
    ARC HDMI port
Qwerty keyboard on underside of remote.
    Optical Audio Out
    3 HDMI (2.0)

Despite some not so good reviews I found for Bauhn products, seems hard to resist for the price. 3 year warranty too. Maybe a good second TV.

Note: The details above are for the TV which I suspect is for Sale on Sunday 29th May 2016.

That TV will never play true 4K from either Netlix/Amazon/SkyQ/4K Blueray.

It does not have HDCP 2.2 or HDMI 2.0a. Also the poster that said they were watching 4K bluerays six months ago was mistaken as they only became available in May.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46 marti9t9

My understanding was that 4k content works just fine on HDMI 2.0. HDMI 2.0a is a minor update to allow HDR content.

Also, do we really know that it hasn't got HDCP 2.2?

You are correct 2.0a is for HDR but also 10bit and a wider colour gamut. I would be very very surprised if it had HDCP 2.2

This TV is is cheapy rubbish you would be much better buying a good 1080p screen. Save your money till you can afford a good screen.

I recently upgraded my 4K TV to one of the newer models with HDR along with a new 4K blueray player and the difference is night and day. And my old one was a very good TV miles better than this rubbish.

Think I've been talked out of purchasing, although this was never meant to replace our 40" Panasonic 3D TV. Only to replace an old 32" SD TV in the other room.

At least that TV has HDCP 2.2 on all HDMI ports. One big issue would be the complete lack of Smart TV features as this TV does not have any sort of an internet connection either wired or wireless.

If you intend to keep a TV for more than a few years, smart TV features are a negative not a positive. They will become outdated security risks long before the TV fails.

While I agree that smart features don't tend to last the course of a screen, unless you are part of the tinfoil hat brigade security in relation to your smart TV is not something that would be on many people's minds.

You would be surprised how many people will assume the browser on an ancient smart TV is still suitable for using online banking etc on (and Irish banks do support antique browsers).

It is far safer and far more sensible in terms of feature support to use a cheap, replaceable external device to replace the 'smart' features really.

If you are using a Smart TV for internet banking you deserve to get taken for everything you have imo. But i get your point.

That is not a "real" Philips
Most likely made by TPV http://www.tpvision.com/products/

Review here is mixed, some hate it, others say OK when calibrated
    http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/philips-55-4k-ultra-hd-tv-55put4900-was-549-now-449-argos-2421999

At this stage, apart from high end TV's, the brand /model of the LCD panel is far more important than the TV brand. Especially if you are using satellite/cable/other box and external speakers.

TBH with 10bit colour coming down the line I'd stick with a normal HD for now unless you need the 4K resolution. Treat it as cheap and cheerful.

    LOL

Smart TV's have been caught doing naughty stuff.
    - sending a list of all the files on any attached USB keys back
    - using the built in mic to send all sound in the room to a third party to recognise speech, and not encrypting it either

their web browsers have also been hit by homepage and DNS hijackers and has anyone heard of a firewall or anti-virus on their smart TV and how often do people update the firmware ?

There's no way I'd ever give an important password to a smart tv

I'm only surprised that there haven't been more reports of malware stealing user logins and passwords.
