Kicking this off with the breaking news that the WBC has stripped Cotto. But if Canelo wins he still gets the belt :D

Canelo should have too much for Cotto, looking forward to it though.

Read an article that was a bit vague basically saying that Cotto didn't comply to WBC rules. Anyone care to suggest the reason why he was stripped of his title?

Here is their statement in full:
The World Boxing Council worked tirelessly through a process that began over two years ago to secure the celebration of the highly anticipated fight between Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. The WBC is proud of that accomplishment that is giving boxing fans around the world a very important fight to see.
After several weeks of communications, countless attempts and good faith time extensions trying to preserve the fight as a WBC World Championship, Miguel Cotto and his promotion did not agree to comply with the WBC Rules & Regulations, while Saúl Alvarez has agreed to do so. Accordingly, the WBC must rule on the matter prior to the fight.

The WBC hereby announces that effective immediately has withdrawn recognition of Miguel Cotto as WBC World Middleweight Champion. If Saul “Canelo” Alvarez wins the fight against Cotto, he will be recognized as the WBC middleweight world champion.

The WBC’s decision is premised on the fact that Miguel Cotto and his camp are not willing to abide by the governing WBC Rules & Regulations, and the specific conditions the WBC established to sanction the fight. Simply put: they are not willing to respect the very same rules and conditions which applied to Cotto becoming WBC champion. The WBC wishes Miguel Cotto the best of luck as we truly regret the course of action which led to them taking such decision.

The WBC is a non-profit governing organization founded 53 years ago. The WBC has implemented all of the current rules in the sport, paving the way to much safer boxing. The WBC creates, implements and enforces, its Rules & Regulations to bring safety, order, unity, justice and equality to a sport that was marred with abuse and unfairness. Since the first day of existence of our organization, the WBC has taken countless actions for the protection of the boxer and it is a fact that most if not all boxers dream of conquering the green belt.

The WBC stands by its honorability and will not participate in the abuse of power and greediness, which has taken our boxing world to regrettable actions from different parties. The WBC wishes the promotion great success and we are satisfied that this great fight for boxing will be enjoyed by millions of fans around the world.

He was never a MW champ to begin with. Wasn't his challenge against Sergio at a catchweight?

Almost certainly refusing to pay sanction fees.

If he wins he can avoid Golovkin with much less embarrassment now.

    Don't think that matters.

I think they're going to look like fighters in two different weight classes.

Canelo is much the bigger man here, but he's slow and Cotto can time him.

As much as I am rooting for Cotto , I still believe it ends with Canelo by KO

It matters to me. I do not recognise him as a MW champ.

This is a good fight. A few months ago I didn't give Cotto a chance.

But the weight may pose problems for Canelo who is a little slow and plodding at times.

I'm gonna have a look at the weigh ins, but this one might be closer than first imagined. I just don't know where Cotto is in the pecking order, he had a good account of himself against Mayweather, a bad loss to Trout, a win where he looked sensational against Martinez who was on one leg and a win against Daniel Geale who I know nothing about.

Can't wait to watch as Cotto has long been a favourite of mine. Rigo on the undercard also should be good value

Can't believe how quiet this thread is, can't wait for this. Hope it lives up to my expectations :)

    Cotto 153.5
    Canelo 155

^^^ Middleweight championship and the heavier man only weighs 155, what a joke. Two good quality fighters but i wish they had the honesty to admit that its not a bout that determines who is the middleweight champ.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 972 ✭✭✭Deiseboy01

He beat the lineal MW champ, irrespective of injuries, so he's the champion my book.

I do not agree with the imposition of catchweight restrictions since though, if he wanted to keep the title he should have allowed his opponents fight at the weight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,225 ✭✭✭Henno30

Cotto has the lineage, but he's one of those fighters who cheapens the lineage rather than enhances it.

He will never be thought of as a middleweight champion of any significance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,351 ✭✭✭Littlehorny

Exactly... Would love to hear Marvin Hagler's opinion on this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,426 ✭✭✭clubwelly

Wasn't Cotto Martinez a catchweight aswell?

Would yous recon Canelo had to loose much to get hit 155?

I heard this morning that Lee Haskins is the new IBF champ as Randy Cabrelloa was 5 pounds over the weight limit

Hold on. Is this bout at a 155 catchweight?

If so, lineage can fook off. Joke shop!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,426 ✭✭✭clubwelly

Yeah Walshb it was a 155lbs catchweight bout.

pac_man - I dunno what the story is with the costs but I know they turned down a catchweight bout with Cabrello but at the end of the day not Lee Haskins fault his opponent was 5 pounds. Didn't even make the super bantamweight limit

2 fights in a row that Cotto weighs in under the LMW limit

Is there a thread for Abraham-Murray? I think Murray might finally capture a title tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 972 ✭✭✭Deiseboy01

I think the GGG fight took an awful lot out of Murray, that's why I'm edging towards Arthur. The Murray that took Martinez all the way probably beats Abraham but I think he may be on the way down, certainly hasn't impressed at SMW to date.

Murray is never overly busy in the ring which doesn't help. Abraham carries a very high closed guard which won't help.

Read today that some people at the weigh in thought Canelo looked drained, probably won't mean much as he's the younger, fresher man anyway but, then again?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 356 ✭✭Diddley Squat

Mosley said Canelo was much quicker than he expected, however I can't see it.
Think Canelo overpowers Cotto tonight .

Canelo by KO , but I really hope Cotto beats the brakes off him

Went as we expected I think, has Murray worked harder he may have sneaked it.

It was, was close but Abraham definitely won

It shouldn't have been a split. Abraham won fair and square. He was more active than normal and even though the punches thrown and landed were very close, Abraham's punches were far more effective.

Nice start from Crolla. Not the prettiest style to look at but it's effective.

It's quite an entertaining fight. Close as well, could be some discrepancies in scorecards in this one.

Crolla's jab is excellent. So consistent.
His workrate is phenomonal, I hope he can keep it up.

Fair f*cks to Crolla. Great for his story and all...although I still don't think he's World Champ level worth at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,430 ✭✭✭megadodge

I wonder was there a broken rib or something, cos even as Perez was going down he shook his head instantaneously as if he knew he was finished?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,625 ✭✭✭✭Johner

    Fair play to Crolla.

Crolla and Lee Haskins world champions though? Says it all.

Murray just wasn't busy enough when Arthur was taking his rests. If you can't nullify Abraham during his spurts, then you need to be peppering him with shots when he's in his lulls. It's not easy because of the high guard but Murray needed to seal those rounds in the first two minutes. He left too many of them up in the air and AA did his usual party trick.

My money's on Cotto- Experience and still in great shape.

What time does it start and any HD links?

    Any pubs showing it?

Rigondeaux is boring, Hopefully show picks up from now.

Actually wouldn't be surprised if Rigo took it easy in the hope of some of his rivals fancying their chances more.

Maybe Quigg, Frampton, Santa Cruz et al might have a false sense of confidence

Ridiculous cards. Canelo won but those scores are ridiculous.

Deserved victory , hopefully canelo takes on golovkin now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,370 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Cotto's lack of power was the difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,370 ✭✭✭✭walshb

If I was Crolla I'd retire a 'world champion,' because I reckon I'd take the belt off him....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,430 ✭✭✭megadodge

Just watched it now and I had Canelo winning by just one round!

I know there were some very close rounds, but I am flabbergasted by the wideness of the judges scorecards.
    And I'm a Canelo admirer!

I thought my old criticism of Canelo being too patient was going to come back to haunt him, but I thought he pulled it out in the late rounds.

Just listening to the interviews and as suspected Canelo is keen to fight Golovkin. Let's get it on!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,370 ✭✭✭✭walshb

The usual lot of close rds means nobody should be surprised at the cards. Cotto wasn't really winning the rds. Canelo was mostly in charge and controlling and landing the telling shots. Overall it was a dull fight.

I want Canelo and GGG please!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,276 ✭✭✭✭StringerBell

GGG sparks Canelo in a proper MW fight imo, ok maybe I can see a couple of scenario's it goes to decision but I would be betting on a stoppage.
