How often should I run?

I'm in training for next year's marathon, it'll be my first. Right now I'm doing three-four runs a week, is it ok to not be doing more than that? I really enjoy my inbetween days; like if I'm running a Monday and Wednesday then I like sitting at home on the Tuesday guilt free.

What's your target? If your only aim is to finish the marathon, well, you could probably do that tomorrow off zero training. The more you train, the faster you'll be able to finish. The only upper limit in place from a running perspective is making sure you avoid injury

A day off here and there is something that may help you. If your running days are quality days then a rest day in 7 I would advise. In a 31 day month I would aim for 4-6 days off at least.

I would use the Winter months to establish a good base line in your fitness. If your goal is only the marathon next October then you have a good deal of time. Depending on your own perceived level of fitness...I would start focusing training for the marathon from around June onwards and get a good training plan in place from them onwards.

But for now....running as often as you are is a good fit and healthy exercise and some thing I do myself "out of season" as I treat now...:-)

    Good luck!

Hey thanks lads. It takes me about 55 mins to run 10k without really exerting myself. I could do it in under 50 mins but I wouldn't keep that up for a marathon. I'm planning on keeping this up until 18 weeks before the marathon, then doing a hal higdon training plan.

Just going off my own experience, I think 3/4 times a week is fine. I would have been running 4 days and roughly 20 miles a week before starting the Hal Higdon plan in June and running DCM in the October. The easier HH plans only have 4 runs a week anyway. There are people here who know a lot more than me and would probably advise to run more often, but I'm like you and like my rest days! I think if you head into Spring having consistently run 4 days a week, then that should leave you in good shape to start the HH plan in June.

I really recommend you keep an eye out for the novice thread here. It should kick off in April. There's no way I would have run as good a marathon without it.

I made the mistake of training for a marathon with running only. On reflection I think it is really important to cross train, with some strength and conditioning gym work/classes, and Pilates or yoga also. It would really help your body cope with the longer miles. You could start some of that now in preparation for your training next year.
