Have one about 6 months now, nice and comfortable, bit heavy on juice around town but actually seems half decent on a motorway run. try get a sport model if you can, styled a bit nicer and a little bit more kit inside

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,688 ✭✭✭zweton

yeah i saw a lovely one here, but i thought the advice was to stay away from the diesels? Do these come in petrol because if they do i will certainly keep my eye open for one. Lovely looking car.

If you looking for a diesel, look at the 2.2, i hear thats the better of the engines. yeah theres a good few 1.8 petrols and I'm not too sure but i think there might be a 2.5 petrol out there for sale as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,688 ✭✭✭zweton

what i need to find out is what one is the most reliable engine in the sports model.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 889 ✭✭✭morritty

Well the diesel 2.0 has issues with the DPF if that ifs not regenerated properly and this causes the diesel to get mixed in with the oil, supposedly was fixed with the 2.2 but I'm not too sure wether thats true or not. obviously you won't get that issue with a petrol, and I'm not sure of any other common issues with the petrol. But since its heavy on juice the question is are you doing large milage and need a diesel or not.

no i wont be doing large mileage so the 1.8 petrol would prob suit.
now if that one i linked to was just petrol:)

Is it the Ford 1.8 engine that suffers from worn piston rings and burning oil

That looks fairly clean, looks to have all the kit, low milage too. no harm in doing a motor check to confirm that, also i think its a UK import, zoomed in of the clocks and i think i can see two sets of numbers so MPH and KPH.

this one has nice cream leather interior. need to ask about the nct though:cool:

8k for a 2.5 litre petrol Mazda 6 that is nearly 8 years old. Absolute dreamer territory.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,688 ✭✭✭zweton

What you think of the first one bazz?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 559 ✭✭✭Squeaksoutloud

I am looking at picking up a similar petrol car for use as a second car..from all the options in and around 1.8 engine and that vintage ..C5 Mondeo occasional insignia a4 ..the Mazda looks the best value to me...sport spec tho. I know the civic is popular here but just doesn't do it for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,411 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The silver one looks decent, wouldn't pay anywhere near 9k for it though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 593 ✭✭✭djsim101

Hey man just to let u know I bought one ( 08 1.8L sport model) 3 months ago and love it. They are really a lovely looking car. Just some advice, that one seems very over priced. I paid 5.5k for mine, although it was a private sale.

One or two slight niggles though, I have to replace the oil sensor (small job that I can do myself, part only 15 quid) and every so often I get a raffle sound from the interior. Slightly annoying but every car has flaws.

Big question, would I buy it again..yes :-)
Any questions let me know and I will try and help u out. Best of luck with the purchase.

They seem to start around 7k for a 08 model mine was 8.5k from a dealer with 145k on the clock

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,688 ✭✭✭zweton

what do ye guys think of this one? not the sport version but quite nice, overpriced?

I just wonder about the "very fuel efficient" part as I read mixed reviews on here. Morrity how are you finding yours on fuel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,411 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Sellers have a tendency to tell you what you want to hear, the same way they will tell you their car is in mint condition only for you to turn up and see it's a shed.

I dont have figures of how it is but the way i tell is i used to stick 40 quid every two weeks in my old car which was 1.6 and now im spending about 60 every two weeks. It can a thirsty car, my heavy foot doesnt really help but you have to think about it, its a big heavy saloon with a 1.8 engine, around town it's not going to be fantastic. but on long motorway trips i do find it better than herselfs 1.4 mazda 3.

what do you reckon this one is worth bazz? what bargaining power would i have if any with this one? thinking of taking a look at it on saturday.

Bought an 08 1.8 petrol sport last year. Less than 60k with Mazda service history. Was 7750. Love the car. Great to drive. I agree with the comments on fuel. I think it does around 7km/l on the motorway at 120 kph. That's on cruise control. Sport model tyres are expensive. 18 inch. Boot lid button stopped working which has been an issue but the key still opens it. Would buy one again.

That car has nearly zero appeal to most people in this country. It's a car you would be stuck with until it dies really. I'd put a value of 4.5k to 5k at most on it myself but it doesn't mean the seller would.

I've been looking for a hatchback, petrol Mazda 6 for a good while and that 2.5 has been on sale the whole time. Potentially a good car but almost saleproof, which makes the price even more baffling.

Calipers are known to seize as well - but typically it is not expensive fix, refurb kits are around 30-40 euro.

Apart from that both generations are good, comfortable and fun to drive.

Should I be worried about the oil consumption? I forgot to mention that I want to buy the second generation 2008 and last question, what about the km, are to many 170k kilometers (not miles) for this engine? Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 889 ✭✭✭morritty

I've topped mine up once in two years, no harm keeping a bottle of oil in the boot just incase. Mines about to hit 160K with no issues at all. Great engines in the petrols

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 242 ✭✭mcbobbyb

We've an 08. Had for two years now without a fault. It does consume a small amount of oil. I just check it every few weeks to keep an eye on the level. It has not gotten worse in the two years we've had it.

The 1.8 engines in these are very reliable. Exact same MZR engine used in the first and second gen Mazda 6, the third gen MX-5 and the 2008+ 1.8 Mondeos as far as I know. Very little can go wrong with one of these. Further to what grogi said, the calipers sticking is a common fault so check that the car rolls freely and doesn't stick when coasting to a stop.

Hope no one minds the cheap plug, I'm selling my 2006 Mazda 6 1.8 petrol hatch:

What about 200k (kilometers), is it to much for the engine(1.8 petrol) ? Thanks

Mileage is very rarely an issue with any car.

Well the navy one had 80,000 less kms. Only two owners. The last one had it for 6 years. That owner had it from new so would have the Mazda service history for the first few years at least. I'd check if it has any record of being serviced regularly. The engine is known to use some oil and needs to be monitored. I'd ask the owner about it and see what they say. It's not a problem on its own. If they said they keep an eye on the oil and top it up once or twice year that would reassure me.

The same here. I would much more prefer a honest seller that says there is a minor issue than someone that simply lies.

Yes, they are very good value. As with any other car purchase, make sure you check it out properly and walk away if something smells fishy.

    Tha'ts the lower mileage one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,269 ✭✭✭3rdDegree

Yes from me too. I had one for 10 years and it never gave any trouble. Isn't even a rattle in it (mileage is lowish at 180k km). The wife has it now and I'd imagine she's hoping to get another 10 years out of it (if Insurance company will let her). It's a great car, but I looked after it very well.
