I'm a week into free trial, maybe that counts.

Yes, American Netflix, Hulu etc, you can select which region you prefer. BBC iPlayer will also work. It routes your traffic based on the site you want to access

I've been using these for months. They have an Irish DNS server which has 11ms pings from my router on eFibre.

Sign up for a free trial, during the week trial they will send you a reduced pricing email.
I have been using this for premier league pass for a while now with no issues.

I was using the German DNS as my second DNS server but after checking the ping times to the Dutch one they are much lower (26ms as opposed to the 34ms)

Anyway to do this on Vodafone HG568c?

The process is the same on most routers, login, find the DNS section and set it there

Log onto your router - probably at https://192.168.1.1 and login with 'vodafone' for username and password.

Click 'Basic' on side-left bar and then 'LAN' - and change DNS here:

Currently paying $5 to Unotelly each month so this looks damn good!

    What exactly does this do?

    Change your public ip?

Does it negatively effect internet speeds/ping rates?

    Sorry for the noob questions

    Sorry for the noob questions

It doesn't change your IP, it's just a smart DNS server that redirects you to a proxy server for some sites and services like Netflix, Hulu, iPlayer etc allowing you to unblock these sites and services. It does not affect speeds or ping times, it's just a change in DNS.

signed up for the trial, appears it just gives you a US ip, no option to select the country, which would be nice (and provided by some other services)

edit: scratch that, just found another page

Apologies in advance if this is a dumbass question - I want to manually enter in UK DNS servers to my Humax 1000s Freesat box to enable BBC I-player but the list doesn't contain any UK servers so does that mean I'm not able access i-player :(

    This isn't a VPN, it's smart DNS. http://computer.howstuffworks.com/dns.htm

Use the Irish and the Dutch ones as DNS 1 and 2, the servers will identify the lookups for the BBC iPlayer and return IP's to redirect through a proxy.

Would be handy if there was an app for switching like unblock us. Maybe there is one and I can't find it on Google play?

Anyway, this seems like a better deal that $5 monthly for unblock us I'll see how the trial goes. Don't seem to get any special offer tho

That would be an issue of a change like this. You do not need to add this DNS change to your router, you can add it individually to devices and leave your router alone do other devices work with the old DNS

How are you finding it compared to unblock us?

I'm currently using them but if this is cheaper/better I'll switch

You will have to manually change DNS on your phone or get a DNS switcher from the app store.

I'll need a while to test this before making a conclusion. I've never had a problem with unblock-us over the years but this IS a lot cheaper even if I can't get the BA that the OP says is available. All I see is the $34.90 / year option which says its already a 40% discount :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,034 ✭✭✭mad muffin

store.bgr.com This one is a much better deal. Lifetime service (30 years in licence section) for €34.

Getflix has an app as well. I've been using it now for a while with no issues. Just as good as un block-us.

This BA is always available, I got it months ago. Sign up to the trial and before that expires you'll get emails offering the BA rate of €19 for 12 months

So getflix is better than the one in the op?

Am more interested in the VPN side of things. Which one of these would be more secure, faster etc, as a vpn?

Online banking is pretty secure no matter how you are connecting to it. It's all encrypted. Using your credit card to pay for something on a website is another matter, but its probably more likely your details will be lost/sold by the website than intercepted. It's not something I worry about.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,072 ✭✭✭mass_debater

Lads, is this safe for stuff like online banking etc?

Yes, it's DNS. You need to understand how DNS works, it's a lookup, your traffic doesn't pass through their servers.

Fake sites won't be able to phish your online banking details because random numbers in your password used to log in are useless, they need all of them

If you do have concerns, just change the DNS settings on whatever individual devices you plan to watch content on, rather than changing the settings on your router.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 22,693 CMod ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

Also a lot of banks now have additional security measures in places, such as 2-factor authentication using your phone number or a chip and PIN device. So even if someone did successfully phish you online banking log in details, they wouldn't be able to do a whole lot with them.

Besides, a legitimate business is not going to attempt something like this unless they want to end up in jail. I mean, do you worry about some rogue employee at your ISP doing the same?

I'd be more worried about the private data you are voluntarily giving away to companies in exchange for "free" services. Do you have a Google or Facebook account? Do you worry about what they are doing with your data? Because you should.

Did you get that offer through stacksocial?

I've been trying to purchase that but it keeps complaining about the ZIP code on my card. I tried 00000 and Ireland. Failed both times, and charged my card $1 for each attempt!

Sorry I just realised I never provided a link :o

It's on store.bgr.com under getflix. I used PayPal to pay and signed in under Facebook.

Just want to say thanks for flagging this - just signed up, great value. Worth the chance for that price, said it was expiring tomorrow so just went for it.
Love that it has an app too, and also has a full VPN included!

I hadn't heard of getflix previously - are they well known, reliable?

Getflix is a brand of Global Stealth, Inc.

Smart DNS Proxy is a brand of Global Stealth Inc.

Global Stealth, Inc. = Cakinberk Telekom Ltd.

This petrol station in turkey (Cakinberk Petrol Ltd) is the company address:
    https://www.google.ie/maps/@39.6574756,27.8481583,3a,75y,224.43h,80.04t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sptvuTE89pV172kt8YTa1gQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

It amazes me the blind faith people have configuring random dns servers on their routers / devices. *Any* of your traffic could be redirected, recorded, intercepted via man in the middle attack, sold to the highest bidder etc. by the company, a rogue employee or just someone with access to their servers such as a data center employee, hacker etc.

Do you know where their servers are, how secure they are, what security measures there are in place?

By all means put it on your android tv box or tv stick or set your router to send it to your now tv box only but having one of these dns service set for general consumption is crazy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,903 ✭✭✭ablelocks

.....or set your router to send it to your now tv box only

I'm going off to learn me the dark arts of routering but if anyone has any tips on this I'd appreciate it.

If my router (ASUS RT-N56U) can set dns by device then I can just re-set it for the xbox and the htpc, right?

What crabbypaddy said in his full post is exactly why I haven't set the router or any devices with a new dns like this yet.

The advice in his post is very good - I would never set it up on a router. (my UK virgin superhub even has dns editing disabled...)
On a device used solely for streaming I think it is fine, imo it's worth the hassle of just going to the individual devices and setting those up.
I use the smart dns on my TV and an old tablet used only for media.

Getflix's VPN offering seems decent - tried it out last night just for brief torrenting and speed wasn't too bad. Lots of different servers available.
