    Hi all.

My husband had a second interview over 3 weeks ago. He phoned them about a week after the second interview for an update and they said they were checking references but that they were having trouble contacting one of his as they were on holidays. He then sent in written references from two previous employments (not his most recent two as they don't give written references) in the hope that it would move things along. He phoned again yesterday and they said they are still checking references and still haven't made a decision. They took the job down from jobs.ie over 2 weeks ago.

What do you think is going on?

The magic psychic 8 ball says "Yes".

Seriously though how is anyone going to answer that here. Pick up a phone and call them

The last phone call (yesterday) said they are still checking references (3 weeks later!!) and still haven't made a decision (3 weeks later!!).

Just wondering if anyone thinks anything suspicious is going on, like maybe they have hired someone and are waiting to see how that person gets on before rejecting my husband. Just wondered if anyone else had experienced anything like this and what happened?

Until he's signed a contract, he doesn't have a job, so regardless of whether there's anything suspicious going on, he should be still job-hunting

He's actually in a job, he just really really wants this one.

Then he should continue to wait, while checking for updates regularly. The reason for the delay isn't relevant

Anything could be happening. The person needed to sign off could be sick/on leave. There could be an internal changes/reorgs impacting the hire. They could be squabbling with HR/Finance over the salary approval... the list of reasons for the delay is endless. The reference review is likely a cover for the real truth.

This just happened to me today!
Two interviews over the space of a month. The second one in the West of Ireland - 600 kms round trip for me plus an over night in a hotel.
Then left 4 weeks waiting - no contact.
Finally contacted the HR manager this morning to complain that this was not good enough.
Got a big apology text and was told they had 'just concluded this morning' and that they had offered the job to another candidate.

I know this sounds like sour grapes (and I am upset) but I am glad at least I now know what a bunch of ***** they are. What a shoddy way to treat people.

I suspect the job is gone for your husband. He should swallow hard and move on. (They would not be checking references unless they had made hi a job offer subject to references. I hope I am wrong for your sake. In any case, I wish you both every success in the future.

What about when you apply for a job online and its been nearly a month and all you get is a thanks for submitting your cv and the job is still open, should I follow up or wait until job closes

Don't bother - move on. If they wanted to contact you, they would have.

They are probably awaiting the arrival of a new guy and your husband is back up until the new guy starts.

Seriously, you made a complaint to the HR Manager before the job was decided on, not being funny but what did you think was going to happen. You could have went from the top of the list to the bottom in that split second.

I once had a lady who I was considering for a position write me a letter of complaint that she didn't get the job before we offered the job to anyone. That's not how to carry on with a perspective employer.

Ah get over yourself. I contacted the HR manager, who had interviewed me twice at this stage, to ask why they had not contacted me in a month!
    Is that not reasonable?
I have hired many people over the years. An interview process is a two way street. Both parties are entitled to be treated with respect and dignity.
Just because you have a position to fill, doesn't make you entitled to act like a Demi God.

From experience I just apply for the job and do the interview then apply for my next job and keep looking for work. No point in waiting anymore. Large company's really take the piss thies days with online exams then in house exams then more tests etc, sometimes it goes on for months.

Good approach. I agree - it's a process. However, sometimes you just have to draw the line

    That's exactly my thinking....
