Swedish Jews not invited to Kristallnacht commemoration due to security fears

(JNS.org) The Jewish community of Sweden was not invited to an annual anti-Nazi event commemorating Kristallnacht due to a perceived security risk, the Swedish newspaper Norrköpings Tidningar reported.

The organizers of “Umeå against Nazism,” held in the city of Umeå last week, said that anti-Semitic and anti-Israel protests have occurred at past events and that it would be an unsafe environment for Jews.

“In previous years, we have had a lot of Palestinian flags at these rallies, and even one banner where the Israeli flag was equated with a swastika,” said the organizers, according to a JNS.org translation.

Organizer and local Workers’ Party member Jan Hägglund said, “The Jewish community wasn’t invited because we assumed they might be uncomfortable around that sort of thing."

The event centers on Kristallnacht, or the Night of Broken Glass, the massive pogrom against Austrian and German Jews that many consider to have marked the beginning of the Holocaust in 1938.

Some city officials did invite the Jewish community to rallies in protest of this exclusion, including a ceremony initiated by Umeå’s first deputy chairman of the municipal government. Agren said it the exclusion was typical for Umeå and that he felt ashamed.

I thought that this story was satire from a Jewish website when I first heard it, but no, it is legitimate.

Is this a commemoration or a celebration of the antisemitic attitudes that lead to Kristallnacht?

If Jews are not welcome but antisemites are, it sounds like the latter.

Representatives of the various political parties involved in arranging the multi-partisan event told conflicting narratives of what happened.

While according to of the Vänsterpartiet (Left Party), a “lack of communication” was the “main reason for this tragic misunderstanding.”

“We would never exclude anyone… this should be an event that is unifying and not a matter of division,” she said, adding that she was unaware of Nazi symbols appearing at previous rallies.

While in the past the gathering was a “narrow affair for ‘leftists,’” this year seven political parties got together to expand it, said the Arbetarpartiet’s Davis Kaža.

“As far as I know, the Jewish Community were never invited in previous years,” he asserted.

“However, this year, they were invited. For me it is completely incomprehensible that a lot of people are attacking this rally, this year, when it has taken a huge step in the right direction.”

Good catch. I do not speak Swedish and found the gist of the article on a lot more reputable websites than the aforementioned 'looney tunes.'

Actually the all too common notion of Sweden being a "leftie paradise" doesn't exactly survive much delving into their 20th century history and is worth reading more on. It is a nation with a long history of quite popular fascism. Compulsory sterilisation was still in effect and on the statute books until the late noughties. Very eugenic altogether.

Sweden actually influenced the nazi party. Sweden had a society for race health in 1909 and then a "race biology" institute in 1922, way before the nazis.
This place was active until late 1950s.

Sterilisation of gypsies and mentally ill people happened until 1976.

The current prime minister's granddad was a nazi lackey.

The largest paper in Sweden, Aftonbladet, described Hitler's war as a "liberation war" at the time.

Thanks, I missed that.

It seems the oranisers have their wires crossed.
One organiser, Jan, say they were not invited and another, Davis, say they were.
The jews themselves say they were not.


Tbh, I think it has snowballed beyond control.
Jan didn't invite the jews because protesters had previously used the commemoration to get digs in at Israel.
Anti-Israeli sentiments there are as strong as here, and in either country people have difficulties separating Jewishness from being Israeli.

Has it been though, I mean if it was a Tory or other Right wing event and an organiser said something that was picked up negatively which was followed by a later statement contradicting the first you would be (rightly) saying its damage limitation and backpeddling.

Also who never invites (as the retraction statement says) Jewish groups to a Kristalnacht rememberance?????

There would be the notion amongst some that they might not want to know. I'd do the mad thing and ask them, but that's my outside the box thinkin in action.

On the times I've clicked on it, I've often been struck not by the football stories, but - for a supposedly conservative rag - the number of articles related to famous women in revealing clothes and sunning themselves on a beach. Going on memory, the Swiss had a very harsh policy towards Jewish refugees during the 1930's. Preventing the "judaification" of Switzerland was deemed a priority, didn't apparently want Synagogues being built and so on. Any parallel made between then and the attitude towards certain groups now, you make on your own. The Swedes were relatively open towards refugees - took in all the Danish Jews afaik.
