I'm looking to get a cordless drill and McQuillan tools have this on offer:

    http://www.mcquillantools.ie/maktec-mt081x100-18v-combi-2batts-70pc-kit/

Just wondering if anyone has used it or bought other Maktec tools? I've looked online for reviews but can't find many - good, bad or indifferent.

Gives no details on battery type (NIMh, Li-Ion), capacity (Ah) etc. You'll need to find that out.

You should be able to get a makita with 2 batteries in b+q for around 150

Maktec is a budget makita brand AFAIK

I'm not sure what the differences between the makita branded stuff and maktec stuff is - but there has to be a difference. Things like bearings, gears etc on makita tend to be v high spec.

In my experience, any drills that include loads of drill bits and stuff in the case aren't the best

In addition, the B&Q Makita stuff, albeit well capable of general DIY, is not up there in terms of quality with the higher end Makita product. A bit akin to Bosch green vs Blue powertools (the blue being vastly superior, and priced accordingly)

Oh, and mcquillans stuff can generally be purchased for far less from other sources. Keep an eye on RayGrahams.com. Based up north with free deliver to republic. Normally very competitive.

    thanks for that.

I was dubious about the B&Q Makita seems it seems to be an exclusive line for B&Q and probably not the same as other Makita stuff. The lack of an Irish website also annoyed me to be hoenst.

I ordered a hitachi from Screwfix. It got good reviews and there's an extra €15 off if you use the code IEWINTERB at the moment.

thanks to all for the advice.

I don't think you'd go too far wrong with that Hitachi.

battery a bit on the small side (as it also is on the b&q makita) but to be fair you get 2 and it should be more than capable for the home gamer.

    Thanks. What about the 3Ah V 2Ah?
One battery will suit my personal needs so is the 3Ah better to go for?

3Ah is more powerful and will last longer between charges.

ah stands for ampere hours used to describe the capacity of the batery.

    second one is also heavier.

KC: do u really need the hammer bit: it makes the unit a lot heavier and in my option hammer action on these is crap

I don't think I need the hammer action as I've only ever drilled into timber, plasterboard but I did miss not having it as I have to call my brother every time I need something put into the block work or concrete fencing (he has a truck load of various tools for installing alarms etc)
