Just curious how often do you guys change cars and what is usually the driving force behind changing.

For me, these days I find I myself getting bored very quickly and that's usually the driving force behind me changing. Have my current car a year, I usually change every 2 years but my eyes have already started wondering. The longest I kept a car was just over 4 years.

Every year and have done for the past 7 years. That's my main car. But I also keep a more fun car to drive which I may change more regularly. I really like my Tesla and I'm due to change it soon enough if I keep up my current trend. But it's a great car and as such I haven't kept up with new car releases for next year. So I don't have anything pulling me towards it at the moment. The reason I change every year is a combination of getting bored with cars quickly and just loving the feeling of being in a brand new car. The Tesla is however as close to new as you can get. Not a spec of dust even in it. Professionally valeted every 2nd week.

Company car changes every 4 years but I see that as nothing more than a large toolbox. Mondeos, insignia and current skoda superb.

Family car changes as finances allow. 07 avensis since 08 still going strong. Wife wants a change to new avensis maybe next year but need a financial windfall.

Had my 03 focus tdci for 5 years loved it spent a lot on it. Changed it as was bored with it and wasn't doing as much miles anymore so got Honda Accord.
That was a lovely car but only had it a year. Was a case of wrong car at the wrong time really.
Had been wanting ST for years so pulled the trigger last year! Love it and I intend to keep it for a few more years have it a year next month.

Have my daily driver 9 years from new. Finances dont allow me to change (plus the car still drives fine!).

I have 2 other cars as fun cars, that keep the desire for another car away. I have them just over 6 years.

Ranges quite a lot for me, but usually around the 2 - 4 year mark. Driving force would be the fact that they are ageing, the miles are clocking up and they will only start to be giving trouble. Prefer a fresher look after a few years.

Every 6 months or so depending on what's out there or info get an offer on the current car.

Have the ML now since Feb and everybody keeps asking if I'm feeling ok as I've the same car in the car park for some time now :)

I usally change every 9 or 10 years, but i only drive big old classics, last car was a 93 bmw740, current car is 97 bmw840. no reason to change more often

About every year or so, I did keep one 4 years, shortest was 5 weeks. Had been spending a lot of time on the road and the main driving force was boredom for most of the changes - most of the time I was sick of looking at them.

Priorities have had to change now though so I will most likely be in the current one for the foreseeable future unless I can offload it for something I want with a minimum outlay.

I'm currently not in Ireland but when I was I used to change a few times a year!

I was only buying in the sub €2k price range so changing cars was easier but I loved driving something different. I guess I am/was young enough and overheads were relatively small so it was easy enough to.

I plan to not sell my 156 ever, but the rest I'll just change out and try new stuff. Will likely go jap next

If I was to average it out every year I change. Wasn't originally my intention to change so often but I get board with them like many people on here have said. I have my current car 6 months I'll probably end up keeping this one at least 2 years. I think if I bought a brand new car I'd keep it longer but maybe not hard to know.

How does changing every year or two years work financially for you guys?

I'm still paying off my car loan, had the car two years now and wouldn't change but if was to, I could only see it costing me money I don't really have.

Every two yrs. or so for the past five years or so. I have a 141 A3 Saloon and have a new A4 ordered for 2016. Hoping to take delivery mid. Jan.

Might keep that one for 3 yrs.+ if I really like it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 701 ✭✭✭carsfan

did you get to drive the new A4?
    What spec are you getting?

Longest I ever kept a car was just over 2 and a half years, shortest 10 months.
Usually get bored very quickly unfortunately and am planning the next purchase six months into ownership. This was easier pre kids, recession etc. and now realise how much money I probably wasted.
I love cars and usually manage to justify to myself and others a valid reason to change even when there isn't one.

Any harm in asking how much to change I nearly got a heartattack with the price I got to trade up a year.

No, not yet. I don't think they're in the showrooms till this coming week at the earliest. I'm hoping to check them out as soon as I can.

I'm getting a 1.4 TFSI petrol 148hp S-tronic and SE trim. Getting the B&O sound system and metallic paint (Monsoon grey)

When I was single I changed my daily driver every two years and kept a weekend (usually highly modified) car for 3 or 4 years.

Nowadays I keep my only car every 3 to 4 years. Have my current car 3.5 and will probably change this time next year (home loan to be paid off first)

Interesting but I tough a vw golf blue motion can do it bitter from the same 1.4?

Dunno my 1.6 has 116hp and does 8.8 original and for my it's way too slow and mine doesn't have turbo so way less torque. 8.8 or 8.1 doesn't make much difference

0-60 is pretty meaningless for real life. it doesn't reflect things like in-gear performance, mid-range acceleration etc.

That petrol A4 is much better value than the diesels and will be a sweet car to drive I would say. Certainly more than quick enough in the real world when coupled with the s tronic box.
Do Audi have a lot of orders in for the new A4 do you know? Did the dealer try and warn you off petrol for resale?

The ddalers said there was a lot of interest in the new A4 but they would, wouldn't they?

About my petrol choice, they didn't say a word either way....I got the impression that there's more interest in petrol this time around than heretofore, especially as the motor tax for both new petrol A4s is €200 and the claimed economy is closer to diesel then previous. I was very tempted to go for the new 2.0 petrol with 190 hp but it has a price tag of 45,000
even more than the 2.0 TDI Diesel

Would love an ST. I know I'll be shot for even asking, but what milage do you get out of it? I already spend about €2500 per year on fuel for 20k km, so don't want it to go absolutely through the roof.
