I have a relaxed attitude towards it all jimf... I get most of the raw meat from Slaney Pet Foods, but I've 2 big dogs and one smallish. If I was just feeding one small dog, I'd be very tempted to buy local.
I don't always feed raw, I'll cook 'em up a nice stew, I'll throw in a handful of cereal-free dry food, I'll throw in a dollop of Rococo (cereal free tinned stuff from zooplus), I'll chuck in a beaten raw egg, leftovers from my own dinner, a tin of sardines in tomato sauce, and they might get yogurt as a snack.
So, a bit of variety, and I don't get half as hung up on it as I used to! As long as there's plenty of meat, and for my preference no cereals, then it can't be too bad :)

what type of meat dbb as in beef/lamb etc

    Hi Jim,
Buying from a raw food supplier means you've more choice. At the moment we're going through an 'i'll eat it as long as it's heart (beef or duck), or venison' phase. There's wide variety of choices and mixtures that you generally won't get too easily elsewhere, although the meat you get via raw food suppliers is often the bits that don't make it to the supermarket... Connective tissue, gristle, mushed-up bone, skin... the minced heart I get contains more than a smidgen of beef cheeks (knowing too much about anatomy has its drawbacks, I tells ya :o), but there's still meat in it.... Again, for a small dog, it would cost very little less per kg of dog to feed human-grade meat (beef, chicken, turkey, fish) from the supermarket, remembering to include offal too.

I've been feeding raw for 3-4 years now I think? I buy from Slaney, Carnivore Kellys and sometimes DogFoodDirect as well as bones or bits and pieces from various butchers. We got a whole lamb there a couple of months ago for ourselves - the farmer knew I had the dogs from last time and saved me all the bones from all the lambs - jackpot lol!! If there's an Asian butcher near you you can pick up all sorts too!!
Bailey is at risk of pancreatitis and also has had surgeries on his legs so I try to keep his meals lean. He's not supposed to have chicken, pork or venison (as recommended by Jean Dodds) because they're "pro-inflammatory" BUT... his legs are fine atm so I do feed it from time to time for variety. I bulk his meals out with lots of veg - some people don't bother with veg and will get annoyed on FB groups if you say you feed it lol

    I mostly feed :
    - Beef (the bulk box is great value), Tripe w/fish, pheasant, rabbit, venison - slaney
    - Turkey mince/heart, beef heart and sometimes the chubbs -CK
    - Duck necks/carcass - but not very often - i'm too lazy to trim off the fat lol! - Slaney/CK
    - Sprat - Slaney/CK
    - Sardines - canned or the odd time fresh from Dunnes

I plan on trying chicken carcass from DFD soon too.

I'm not a strict raw feeder. As I've said they get veg, they also get scraps the odd time (my mum makes extra veg for them lol) and they'd get good quality wet food every now and again - rocco, lukullus, forthglade, natura, TOTW etc

Lucy's ears get dirty if she has anything with rice so I'd skip that too..

When starting out you're best to stick to one protein for say two weeks so even a few trays of chicken legs would be all you'd need for now. And then you can introduce other meats. Don't get too bogged down on % of bone, offal etc for now either - keep it simple while your dog adjusts.

Hi I also feed raw to my two Westies. I was only buying from Nutriment but have extended now to Slaney and Carnivore Kellys for variety. I also often buy some price reduced meat at the shop and freeze it. The bones are coming from our butcher for free. What I don't feed is pork but this is more are personal thing ;-). Each of my two are getting around 250g of meat (including bones, raw coconut oil, veg etc.) which brings me cost wise to 1.30€ for both of them. I also bought a dehydrator and do the treats (like duck hearts, lamb liver...) for them to by myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,255 ✭✭✭✭Lemlin

Your local butcher may have organ meat available. I get a lot of liver off my butcher. I also get cow's and lamb's hearts.

Pig's legs are also a great snack for chewing. I did get a pig's head once but the missus wasn't too pleased!

I know this is an oldie but can i ask from the people that feed RAW i usually buy the pre-mixed chubbs from CK... and have recently bought the nutriment starter pack to see both types... the consistency is different etc now my dog loves both i am just looking for some opinions ;)

    Thanks,

I like Nutriment better - better ingredients and suits my two really well. I hate the tubs though- I hope whoever I order it from next time (as there's a few suppliers now) will have chubbs in stock!!

EDITed to add.. Don't be surprised if there's suddenly a bunch of bad reviews for Nutriment or the old chestnut that it's not Irish meat blah blah

Thanks a mill for your reply... you know the sad thing is.. i like the tubs :D i find the chubbs really messy, Cody loves both so on that side Im not bothered i suppose i was only wondering about the texture etc. Plus they do alot more variety of different meats too. :)

    Hi tk123

Can i pick your brain here about raw food?
I have a 1 year old malamute and thinking of changing to raw food.
I ordered a sample box of chubs from Carnivore Kellys.
Do you freeze these or keep them in the fridge?
If i order meat from them do you cook the food before giving it to my dog
or do you give it to them raw?

Sorry new to raw food usually use dry food but lately my dogs stools
are fine in the morning but as day goes in he goes to diarrhea.

    Thanks

You keep them in the freezer and then defrost to feed them raw. :)
I've switched to Nutriment and the difference in my girl its amazing - same as your guy she was fine in the morning but got worse in the evening sometimes. I had been putting it down to 'activity poo' but my boy was restricted after surgery and she was too because she wouldn't walk with my friends lol :o... her poo was as bad whether she was active or not so I knew there was something else going on.

No Nutriment is another brand of raw food completes so meat/bone/organ etc mixed up for you. There used to be a seller in Ireland who stopped selling it a while back and you had to PM them on Facebook to order etc etc so not many people knew about it... there's now 3 suppliers :

www.Slaneypetfoods.ie - he hasn't added to the site yet but has stock as he's delivering to me today
    www.NutrimentIreland.com
https://fetchyourpetneeds.com (10% off your first order when you sign up to their newsletter!)

I used to diy so bought the minces, necks, wings etc myself and made up meals but have been using completes lately for convenience/out of laziness lol

Thank you for your help on raw food. I think it's the best way to go with my mal.

Just one last question with Nutriment you don't cook just give it to my dog raw? correct

I have a dehydrator too. When they have sweet potato on offer in the supermarkets I stock up to mix with meat for treats. They last weeks in an airtight container

Just wanted to add my vote for feeding raw.

I started feeding my miniature dachshund raw about a month ago. I buy the chubbs from Carnivore Kelly's. I picked them because they offer a sample pack to give your dog a taste of the product before you commit to a bulk buy and their delivery service is perfect for me, they use DPD for deliveries and my local DPD is the best out of all the local couriers.
We tried the sample pack and my little fella loved it straight away and now he is a changed dog. My vet and I suspect he has pancreatitis but possibly just a mild case of it and it is a hard one to diagnose.
I won't go into a load of detail and derail this thread but since starting my dog on raw:
He has gained weight and kept it on.
He licks his bowl everytime, he never did this before and would often leave behind some or all of his food.
His stomach no longer makes crazy gurgling noises - I only really copped this one recently. Prior to raw, his stomach was always gurgling after he ate, and I mean really loud gurgling noises. We always kind of thought, it was just his stomach settling or something but I think he must have been having some sort of reaction to his food.
Also, he used to dry retch quite a bit and he doesn't do that anymore so I'm guessing the dry retching may have had something to do with his food.
He also seems more energetic, his breath isn't as smelly and his coat (which has always been incredibly soft) feels even softer.

I know every dog is different and I certainly don't think raw is one size fits all but if you have a picky eater or your dog has never really settled on their food, I'd definitely recommend giving raw a try.

I prefer DPD too - they deliver here first thing so handy to have it early and packed away in the freezer! Fetch your pets needs use DPD too - I'm going to be getting our stuff from them in future

So take a 500g tub for example https://fetchyourpetneeds.com/products/nutriment-turkey-formula

Lets say for an adult German shepherd. Would it be 250g in the morning and 250g in the evening. Or is it 500g morning and 500g evening. I must be blind because I cannot find a feeding guide.

P.s Im just planning ahead as im possibly due a pup later this year.

It's 2-3% of the dogs ideal weight per day for adult dogs. 5% for growing pups as a starting point.

There's another school of thought that you feed a % of their current weight so 10% at months 1-2 and reduce by 1% each month. Really you just need to adjust up and down as the pup is fat or skinny! I have photos of Lucy where she looks like a skeleton and then photos where she's fat lol. For a GSD you'll be wanting the 1.4kg chubbs lol :p

The chubbs are better value by the looks of it. Any tips on making the chubb last longer? Would it be ok to mix it with a dry food?

So I am bitting the bullet and heading over to Ck tomorrow to get my lad a months supply of food or there abouts. I have been throwing some chicken and mince in with his kibble for the last few days and he seems to love it. Just before I head over I want to see what you guys think. I am going the DIY way as it seems to be cheaper. I'll be getting a mix of chicken mince and Turkey mince 15kg , 1kg beef kidney, 1kg beef liver and 1kg turkey heart , I'll be getting 2kg of veg and I'm going to put in 2kg of oats to bulk it up. I will be feeding him around 900g a day ruffle. It's working out cheaper then I thought (47euro)and to be honest ill be annoyed at myself if it's correct as I'm paying that for kibble . any feedback would be great before I go over and pick up the wrong things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 532 ✭✭✭Springwell

The oats are not necessary :) You need a roughly 80% muscle (heart is muscle to), 10% bone, 10% offal ratio. It doesn't matter if every meal is balanced exactly as long as it evens out over the week/month etc

Yes, it's fine to feed together - I've been doing this for years. Good quality dry and raw on top. Makes life easier if you run out of raw/are travelling with the dog too to have him still used to a bit of dry feed

I used to mix wet food from zooplus e.g. Rocco for Lucy because she was eating us out of house and home lol! :p. Also I didn't have my second freezer so had limited space at the time

Just be careful if the plain minces already have offal in them - too much could blow your guys bum off(!) :o. Any independent source e.g. FB group that doesn't have a vested interest in one supplier will tell you to start with one protein for say 2 weeks then add another and then slowly introduce offal. My boy does great no matter how much I give him but it can be too rich for my girl. I diy'd for 5 years but I'm just so busy atm the chubbs are easier for me. My girl was having tummy issues too and they've cleared up great on Nutriment so I'll stick with it for now and start trying some different brands as they become available. There's more and more people stocking different brands from the uk that get really good reviews.

So got sorted today , they recommended instead of getting the 1kg of each offal they gave me 1.5kg of the rolled offal to 15kg of minced chicken. Also picked up duck wings and chicken necks for later on In the month to see how he gets on. Got 22 days worth of food adding 2kg of vegetables aswell. Going to add a spoon full each day to his kibble until I use that up. He didn't even think twice about eating it today !

How is it going so far. Has he moved to raw food totally now? Are you still making up your own feeds and if so do you mind me asking what the costs are every month?

Good news is my breeder has confirmed his bitch is expecting. So im trying to research as much as i can before the pup is due. I will most likely start off with the pre mixed neutriment puppy formula for a while but i would like to try the diy method myself as he grows.

    Hi ,

Yes my guy is on raw feed all the time now , it's going great ! I make it up all myself which is a pain at the time but worth it in the end , my last order was this. 20kg of minced chicken and duck , 3 kg of beef liver, kidney, heart, I added around 2kg of oats and about 2kg of vegetables, I know the last two are not necessary but it bulks the food out. I'n between meals I will throw him a frozen sardine or chicken leg etc. Got some mackerel and salmon heads for free also. All this food will ruffle last me 30 days and works out about 50 euro. The only draw back is I need a second chest freezer due to the quantity of the food. Also carnivore Kellys will give you a big bag of bones if they have them which also have alot of meat on them. I was very reluctant to start feeding my guy raw , but the look on his face when a big juicy bone is handed to him is worth it !

Thats good news. I must speak with my local butcher and see what deals i can get. I had a beef heart stuffed yesterday for my own dinner. It was massive. Cost €5. ( i had all the kids try some ).

Dubs1990..... what dog have you got? What quantity are you feeding per day?

He's a German Shepherd ruffle 37kg. He's active so I feed him around 1kg of food a day, somedays can be a bit more if he has been out for a good while with me. Also look up slaney petfoods or carnivore Kellys, I know carnivore Kellys mix there mince with bone cartlidge etc. Also cheaper if you pick it up from the depot.

Perfect. Ill have a gsd myself soon. It was looking like 1kg per day going my the guides. If its cheaper from the depot ill most likely do a pick up once a month.

I got them a few times but found them a PITA having to cut all that fat off! You might need to feed boneless for the next meal depending on the dog - you'll know by the poos!

Thanks a mill ! Not to worried about the fat I could do with putting some weight on my guy ! He runs everything off at the moment ,!

Would yous class a duck carcass as a meal ? Got 10kg of them today ruffle 13 carcases averaging 800g . Already had to buy a chest freezer lol!

Could be a meal, just be careful with bone content, it could be high and might bung them up a bit! A boneless meal or two in the days after would balance it out! Lucky dogs!!

The outlet is gone a good while afaik!

slaneypetfoods.ie stocks and delivers them. Mark had said on FB that there's free shipping on orders over €50 now but the website hasn't been updated yet so if you're going to order contact him first ;)
Chicken carcasses suit my two better and I just don't have time to deal with a giant box of them lol so I get the nutriment ones.

Yep he said it on the 'raw feeders in ireland' FB group! ;) I really like him and had been buying from him for years but had to switch from DAF as it just wasn't suiting Lucy anymore. More convenient delivery times and better packing aside from fetch/nutriment ireland/scruffles.. my god it's great to get a delivery where everything doesn't REEK of tripe! :o

He's a very genuine, helped me out no end when Bella went on hunger strike after her op. I actually got a few nutriment trays from fetch your pet needs last week. Wasn't too fussed about them now.
Is that scruffles from the UK you're buying from?

Yep same here - he ordered chicken and tripe mix especially for Lucy but it wasn't the elixir I was hoping for! Also if he was in the neighbourhood he'd let me know in case I needed anything.
The nutriment just suits Lucy better so stuck with it for now and trying some alternatives from scruffles.co.uk ;)

Got a bag of frozen Natures Menu chunks as I thought Finn might be more tempted to go outside by that than dry, and boy was I right. He loves the stuff! I've been just giving it for his last meal at 22:00, but now am considering if I have the setup to switch to raw completely.

A couple of times I've forgotten to take it out to thaw and had to microwave it. He stands staring at the microwave. Smells like arseholes though :puke:

If you put it in a plastic bag and then sit it in a bowl/container of cold water it'll thaw quickly ;) Or just feed them frozen lol :pac:
