What height are you?

(nb: there are minor errors in the poll, so just choose the closest option.)

    I'm 5 foot 8.5 inches tall.

I didn't think I was small but I have heard random suggestions in various places online that that's considered by some to be small for a guy, and I'll admit that that has made me slightly self-conscious at times, although I've gotten over it.

There are plenty of guys smaller than me, and I never considered them to be particularly small either, but if people think I'm small, what must they think of those guys who are smaller than me?

Anyway, obviously what others think doesn't matter. But I have found it interesting that some people think I'm small when, even though I'm usually in the smaller portion of any male population I'm ever around, I never really felt small, unless I was surrounded by 6-footers.

    So, what height are you?

I've included female options so they're not left out.

I'm 6ft4". I love being tall, wouldn't like to be much taller though to be honest. They're aren't many downsides to being tall except flights!

I wouldn't call 5'8.5 small but at the same time I wouldn't call it tall either.

I'm 5'11 and yes I am quite mad that I couldn't have that extra inch.

I'm 182cm as I live in a metric society unlike all the dinosaurs living in imperial times.

    BTW I'm 11st 10lbs if anyone's interested.

^^I was wondering this when I saw the poll - why does imperial still dominate for height/weight measurement?

This pole is a scam, there's no half inches... That half counts you know!

5' 8 is probably on the lower end of average for an Irishman.

We're not a tall people, probably something to do with da brits and 8000 years of opression.

    5'10"

I used have a bit of a complex about it thinking I was a bit of a short arse, I was the smallest in my family, my other five brothers were all 6ft+, old man was 6'8", but over the years I learned 5'10" is about average, though I still feel a bit conscious when someone is much taller than me and I'm having to stand back a bit from them so I'm not straining myself looking up at them :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

    Either 6'3 / 6'4, been a while since I checked.

The GF is small enough for me to rest my arm on her head and lean on her. I get some rest and it riles her up so I get to have my fun :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,816 ✭✭✭Calibos

    About 5'7" myself.

Was always a smallest or joint smallest male in my class during school. I worried about my height as a kid and was sometimes bullied for it. Didn't develop small man syndrome though so I'm not an obnoxious annoying little dick. However I don't think I've given my height a serious thought or worried about it since 5th or 6th year which was in 1990/91. Like yourself, as an adult man I know I am at the small end of the bell curve but tbh I don't feel small in general. Its funny, I don't feel small when surrounded by taller people, I feel small when beside a smaller bloke. ie. standing beside a 5'4" bloke makes me mentally acknowledge my own height for a moment. I must be about 3 or 4" taller than him....but then immediately my thought is.....but I'm a small guy compared to 95% of blokes. Thats the only time I ever think about height.

I'm 177cm, if you don't know your metric height there's a good chance you don't know your exact height.

It's a hangover from previous generations. People might measure and quote in metric when being specific but they're used to estimating in imperial. They'll take out a measure tape and say "Ah that's 196cm" but they'll glance at it and say "I reckon it's about 6ft"

Even if you didn't grow up with imperial measurements you probably grew up with parents who constantly used imperial.

I'm not that tall at 5'4. I like it. Of course I can't get away with too much weight because I've a small frame. I want to lose 7lbs but I like food and sitting far too much!!

Last night I went to the shop for a walk. It was cold and foggy but that didn't stop me from eating a mars icecream on the way home.

Funny how many folks are "Just under six 'foot' tall".

I'm always amazed at the amount of Irish men in particular who are "exactly 6 feet tall"...in their own words, and usually heads. I'm properly tall, (just over 6'6" - 2.04m to be precise) but if I had a penny for every (usually drunk) Irish male who has said something along the line of the following to me:

"What height are you because I'm exactly 6 feet tall and you're way taller than me?"

...well I'd be rich. You're not 6 feet tall, you're not even close, that's why I appear to be so much taller you.

Another favourite is "I measured myself" - well good, that's scientific isn't it?

I think culturally men are groomed to believe 6 feet tall is an optimal height (particularly for attracting women), so they lie about it, either deliberately or perhaps wishfully and innocently.

I love my height (didn't always, some bullying when I was a child/teen) and although it has its disadvantages (clothing wise in particular) I wouldn't change it even if I could.

Everyone from 5ft 9in to 5ft 11.5in is probably exactly 6 feet tall!
