my scott speedster 40 black and white road bike was stolen on Thurs 29-10. It was at my work car park in Charlemont place dublin 2. I bought it in march (still paying it off cycle to work scheme).
It was stolen between 3-45 and 5-10.

    They cut through my lock.

Sorry to hear. What sort of lock was it? Might be benefical for people who use the same to get them replaced.

Do you need to carry it with you? If not, get a motorcycle one.

I leave mine at work. It's an abus lock. with a cable for the wheel. I've another small lock I use for the shed at home and attach it to a ladder

Have a Kyptonite New Yorker and have done for a few years. I leave the lock in underground parking in work most of the time. Bit heavy too carry around frequently, but its a pretty good lock.

The cheapest lock with Sold Secure Gold rating. Equivalent to 60euro+ Kryptonites, also a bit wider and lighter. Nicer lock/key system.

    Slightly fugly though.

Heat treated steel chain and shutter lock. Carry it like a belt, just the right size too. But I never leave it out in open for long periods of time. If I would have to I would get secondary lock for other wheel, or u-lock+cable combination.

Kryptonite New York Fahgeddaboutit and Abus Granit X plus. And a cable.

My previous question was to enquire if you have to take the lock to and from work. If not, you have scope to get a larger, heavier lock.

How much is your bike worth op? I would also suggest two locks to make sure the bike is locked correctly. I have a Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 as my main lock and a Knogg Kranksy wire lock as a secondary lock. When cycling with the OH, we have another Kryptonite Evolution Series 4. Does the job ;)

Kryptonite Series 2, U-lock, carry it on the bike. It's heavy, but worth it.

Kryptonite Series 2 U lock, kryptonite cable and halfords cable...leave them at college car park, too heavy to carry. The key system is a bit **** though, only over a year old and its a bit fiddly now.

Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit and Kryptonite Series 2. Pitlock security skewer on front wheel. Hex nuts on headset and seat post sealed with epoxy putty.

Stick a bit of oil into it, and where the lock connects. My locks get a bit arsey from time to time. Just corrosion I find.

Same here, plus the kryptoflex cable it came with. A couple of lads in work had cheap locks and had their bikes lifted from outside work. Mine's never been touched (as far as I can tell) but I have stopped leaving my under saddle bag on the bike since the bikes were taken

What's the best cable lock for the wheels?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,054 ✭✭✭Bloggsie

IMHO it also depends were you are locking the bike, a quiet place or a place with heavy foot traffic, CCTV in the area, does your job have secure facilities for bikes.
As for the lock it has to be the Kryptonite S2 plus cable.

Kryptonite NY U-lock + Kryptonite Series 2 U-lock with extra cable. Depending on where I'm going I take a combination of the 3, and sometimes all of them.

Kryptonite Series 4 with kryptoflex in work, and leave it in place. Bikes live inside the house when at home. Kind of surprised at the number of people specifying the Series 2 on its own to be honest, as I seem to recall the video of a lock where the frame was used as a lever to twist and pop the lock was later said to have "featured" one of them.

As has already been alluded to, locking strategy is as important as the lock. Mine wouldn't be ideal in that I can only secure the frame with the U lock, but the cable goes through both wheels. If we had proper Sheffield stands I could secure the frame and rear wheel in the lock, and only need the cable for the front wheel. While the mini size of the lock is a factor in this, it also avoids leaving excessive space to get anything else into the lock, e.g. a jack.

Besides, there's generally 1-2 carbon framed bikes locked up with an "armoured" cable lock right beside my beater, so they'd be a more likely target I think.

It was a Norco keyed coil lock, I have used it for the last two years, I suppose I should have got a better one when I got the new bike.

While we are on about locks, what is the best lock to get to stop them form been able to cut through so easy.

Also were does people insure there BIKE with and how much usual( can not on house insurance as renting), value of bike 1k (going to get a new one)

I know someone whose wife's bike was stolen when secured by just a Series 2. Think it's vulnerable to hammer attacks. Very good secondary lock though, and handy backup when a mini lock is too small for a lamp post or whatever.

Would you have any examples of a motorcycle lock to be used, does not matter on weight will leave at work

I don't have mind to hand (it's in Drury Street) so I don't know what brand it is. I got it in Lidl or Aldi years ago. Heavy duty chain covered in fabric with a heavy padlock. I've never had any bother with it. They usually have them when they do motorcycle stuff.

Both my wife and myself have series 2 locks. I just found out a couple of weeks ago that they are the exact same key!

    Moved post to this thread.

Just for yourself, that is possibly one of the worst locks you can use. My partner had it on our daughters bike and lost the key. I was able to remove it with my bare hands after a few strong tugs. I imagine a snips would have got through it in 3 or 4 seconds.

You can insure while renting if you live with family only (I use AXA), ulster bank also used to provide it.

When I was in college I extended my parents house insurance to cover my bike and laptop if thats an option

How much does that setup weigh and cost?

My attitude to bikes is that its better to have one you can actually use that runs well but looks a bit cheap than a shiney bike you have to carry an extra 2 kilo of lock for (I am pretty broke though)

I use the Kryptonite New York lock

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/kryptonite-new-york-std-nyl-lock-with-flexframe-bracket/

Lock bike in closed bike shed in work. I'm happy enough to use this paired with the mini evolution 5 when locking on the street.

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/kryptonite-evolution-mini-5-flexframe-u-bracket-lock/

Weight not a concern as when commuting to and from work it not really that noticeable stuck in backpack.

Obviously I don't bring on the 'good bike' for weekend spins, but I think that seeing 2 Kryptonite locks (one heavy duty one) would be enough to make any potential thief look at another bike before mine

Exact same for me, excellent mount for on the bike aswell (once you figure out how to attach it), they should have called that model the Fahgedaboutit because it totally removes the giant pain in the ass that carrying a lock used to be.

I have a massive ONguard Bulldog thing aswell but its just too heavy so it stays down at the DART stationand I can grab it if going into town or make my bike double secure if leaving it there for a while.

    Kryptonite Evolution With Cable

These are great locks; someone tried to open one once that was on a bike in the garden shed. They wrecked the lock with a screwdriver I presume but couldn't get the lock off.

However, nothing is perfect; to get the damaged lock off took me about 10 seconds with an angle grinder.
