Hi guys - I did 5k in this park recently and the garmin distance was 5.2 - does anyone know if the signal is generally dodgy within the park?

Generally I wouldn't pay attention of the garmin was over but .2 seems excessive over 5k.

    Thanks

garmin aren't accurate when running under trees and will always be a bit out. Not sure what course or race you ran but I did see a course been measured with an trundle wheel a few weeks ago.

I ran a 5k race there last Saturday. It was Ras an Oireachtas. I use the run keeper app on my iPhone and it measured as 5.03 so pretty much spot on.

Consumer-level GPS devices aren't accurate, full-stop. They all have a significant error-margin. And that's before you get to "glitches", where your device reports that you're a mile away.

They're especially irrelevant in a one-off run. If you ran that route another 20 times, and consistently had 5.2km measurements, then it might be long. Or it might be the trees. Or the 5k measurement you're comparing it to might have taken a different racing line.

If you want to know how long it takes you to run a particular distance, do a properly-measured race. If it's a training run, "GPS-distance" is good enough

Thanks for your replies guys. I am trying to figure out whether the race was not measured correctly or whether the garmin was out. Several others had same garmin measurements and my performance and performance of some friends was not as good as expected for a nice course. Generally in races my garmin will be very close and the .2 is unusual.

I am just trying to figure out fitness to pace for a 10k in a couple of weeks . I suspose I will go do a quick Mile or something !!

Either way it's less than 1 minute out. I'd imagine the course was a little long so just split the difference. You should be able to work out race pace by feel rather than by calculator anyway because all courses and conditions are different. I'd say it's scientifically impossible to measure anything 100% accurately. A few years ago I was involved in a race that used 4 different methods to measure a course, gps watch, car, Jones counter, and meter wheel. We got 4 different results but all were fairly close, the wheel gps and Jones were in a 20 or 30 meter span of road while the car was 80 or 100 meters longer than Jones. It was a 4 mile race and we obviously went off the Jones for the race.

I measured it as 6.3 for the 10k if it was the Brain Tumour Ireland race on Sunday.
I think due to the nature of that course it would take a lot of skill to run the exact racing line! With all the twisty turny bits, unless you were a very experienced racer I think it'd be hard not to run long.
