I know there was one of these threads knocking about a while ago but thought I'd refresh for argument's sake. Inspired by the other handbag thread and a recent conversation with the OH - ("sure what the hell do ya need to carry your hair straightener around for? Didn't you straighten your hair before you left the house??")

In short, I am a heavy traveller. Can't leave the house without all kinds of stuff that I probably will never need but "don't want to be stuck." It's probably pathological at this stage. That said, I'd be great in a zombie apocalypse.

    Current bag stuff:

    - Wallet
    - House keys
    - Makeup bag including foundation, bronzer, highlighter, eyebrow palette, mascara, eyeliner, lip gloss, lipstick
    - Foundation and moisturizer I bought in duty-free (passed through the airport today)
    - Passport
    - Note pad
    - Journal
    - 2015 diary
    - About 47 pens
    - 2 books
    - Laptop and battery
    - Bag of almonds
    - Bottle of water
    - Sunglasses
    - Glasses
    - Spare pair of contact lenses + eye solution
    - Umbrella
    - Scarf
    - Hair serum
    - Hair brush
    - Hair clips
    - Plasters, travel-sized antiseptic cream
    - Scholl gel heel cushions
    - Vaseline
    - Chewing gum
    - 2 phones and charger
    - Hand wipes
    - Multi vitamin

Am I mental? That took a while to type out. Yes, perhaps I am mental.

So what about you? What's in your bag?

Yes, you are mental to carry around that much stuff.

I swap bags for work / day out,but I'd at most have :
    Wallet
    Keys
    Phone
    Work swipe
Make up (though usually just keep it at work)
    Tampon / liner
    Plastic shopping bag
    Pill

I go with the smallest bag possible with the fewest things possible. Can't be doing with carrying excess **** around.

Afraid I have to agree with gongoozler, that's mental :P

    I have:
    Phone
    Purse
    Keys
Tube of blistex for my lips
    Small bottle of breath spray
Normally the only make up I bring is powder and a brush but sometimes I also bring blush and eye products
    Earphones
    Phone charger
    Wipes
TOTM products when it's that time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,495 ✭✭✭✭eviltwin

    I carry very little.

Purse, keys, phone, perfume, hairbrush, shopping bag and whatever book I'm reading.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,281 ✭✭✭Valentina

    Day to day it's usually:

    Wallet
    Phone
    Keys
    Hair bobbins/pins
Tangle Teezer (a small plastic hairbrush without a handle)
    Lipstick/lip balm
    Powder
    Gum/mints
    Hand sanitiser
    Pack of tissues

On a night out I usually have more make up with me, perfume, plasters, hip flask... :pac:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,981 ✭✭✭ElleEm

    The basics for me are-

    Phone
    Keys
    Wallet
    Vaseline
    Hand cream
    Hand sanitizer
    Tissues
    Hair bobbins
    Diary
    Pen
    Mints

    This is currently joined by-

    Billions of old reciepts
    Stray coins
    Paperclips
    Safety pins
Pens and a builder's (why?) Pencil
    Pain killers
Bits of paper with scribbles from work
An old bank card I keep meaning to cut
Loads of earrings I put in there when I get bored of wearing them

I need to clean my bag!

On a work day I carry:
    Phone x 2
    Wallet
    Keys
    Pens
    Hairbrush
    Tampons
    Bottle of water

On a night out I bring the bare minimum- single house key (rather than usual bunch of keys), small wallet with cash and one card, comb, phone and sometimes lipstick.

I change my work handbag every day or so, depending what I'm wearing so i never accumulate too much stuff in bags.

Guy here who'll contribute the contents of his work satchel :)

    Wallet
    Keys
    iPhone Charger
    RayBans
    Jar of Coffee
    Leather Gloves
    Bottle of Water
    Chewing Gum
    Paracetamol
    Book

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,624 ✭✭✭✭meeeeh

    Wallet
    Bank stuff
    Keys
    Unsent letters
    Lip gloss
    Tampons and pads
    Tissues
    Hand cream
    Umbrella
    Shopping bag
    Pile of receiptS
    A nappy
Plastic toy that I don't know where it came from
    Children's book
    Some pens
And probably some half eaten biscuit

My bag is a black hole into which things just disappear and are emptied into a bin every couple of months. Usually when I am trying to reconcile bank and figure out who the lodgement was from and I start going through Tesco and Aldi bills to find bank lodgement slips.

I don't generally carry a bag. I carry with me my phone, house/car keys and my purse ( a small one that is literally big enough for a few cards and cash.
If I do carry a bag. The above three items are still the only thing I tend to carry, if I'm going crazy (or in that direction) I'll have the keys to my parents house with me too!

    You're all mental :P

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,175 ✭✭✭intheclouds

I used to have a little "leaving the house" mantra where Id recite "keys, money, fags, phone" and check my bag (or pockets for same).

Now I dont smoke anymore but I still use the mantra as the holy trinity of keys, money and phone are the absolute bare essentials.

However my daytime bag (that I bring to work) also contains (right now):
    glasses case (glasses and sunglasses),
    anti perspirant,
    ear plugs,
    inhaler,
    tissues,
    passport,
    drivers licence,
    tampons,
    hat,
    vitamins,
    fold up shopping bag,
    ipod,
    nail file,
    rennies and paracetmol

Theres usually a spare hair bobbin in there though I cant see one at the moment.

Occasionally there is a mascara/eyeliner/lipstick in there too.

And in winter I always carry shoe spikes in case of ice.

I always find these threads fascinating. The idea of a "daily carry" is so intriguing! To see what people decide to have or not have with them out of the house...

As for me I will (nearly) always have

    Phone (x2 if it's a workday)
    Wallet
    Keys
Combs (usually 3 or 4, I'm ridiculously vain about my hair)
A small tub of hair pomade (see above!)
    Wireless headphones
Wired headphones (in case the charge goes or I randomly have to get on a plane or something!)
    iPad
    Fountain pen & paper
    Painkillers
    Tampons
    Watch
    Gloves
    Vaseline
3D glasses (They just live in my bag in case of impromptu cinema trips!)
In the summer I'd have my prescription sunglasses.

I really need to get myself a good portable charger for my phone/ ipad.

I think this is my problem, I use the same bag every day for work & it would probably safely carry the kitchen sink with room to spare, so I just accumulate crap as I go.

That and when I leave the house I'm usually gone for 12+ hours what with work/gym/meeting friends or the OH for dinner etc so I just pack all the cosmetics and clothes and little bits n bobs that I think I might need.

Funny thing is when I last went to get my hair done the stylist told me that the hair on the right side of my head was "weaker" and more brittle than the left side from it getting constantly tangled in my bag strap!

    In my handbag I have:

    Wallet
    Keys
    Phone
Insulin pens x2 and space needles
Blood glucose meter, glucose testing strips and finger pricker
Jelly babies and Lucozade tables (hypo treatments)
    Paper tissues
    Sunglasses
    Umbrella
    Comb/brush
    Work ID
    Lipstick and lip balm
    Perfume
    Face powder and brush
    Pens

The first 6 items would always be in my bag. I wouldn't leave the house without them.

I only use a bag normally for work, outside of that I've my cash card, leap card, phone and fags in a jacket pocket.

However my bag (messenger bag) has six seperate compartments and a fair bit of stuff:

1-2 laptops (usually one with power cable)
    A4 notebook
A zillion pens, highlighters and post-its
Mini mouse and pointer for presentations
    Cable for charging phone
    Book
    Lozenges
    Handcream
Makeup bag with foundation, mascara, lipstick, powder, anti-perspirant, perfume, highlighter
    Random food items
    A bottle of water
    Wipes for my glasses
    Glasses
    Contact lenses
A variety of painkillers and medicines including lemsips

    edit; i forgot
    Wallet
    vaping stuff
multiple work badges depending on where I'm working
    earphones
    sudocreme
    Hair wax

Mine's a satchel type of bag: I carry a lot of stuff, but its organised into a couple of pouches and several zipped pockets.
Any time I decide to leave something out, I need that very thing within days.
    So here goes!

Wet wipes and tissues, plus sometimes a cotton hanky.
Green pouch -- believe it or not, it contains the following, all neatly nested together:
    thin red plate/folding cup/plastic cutlery
    Allergy spike and antihistamines
tiny survival kit with pen, paper, chalk, crayon, wire, hooks and string.
tiny fire kit with kindling, matches, candle.
    headphones. ear plugs.
tiny lady's pack with knickers, tampon, panty liner and condom.

    Purple pouch

lipstick, moisturiser, eye pencil, toothpaste, toothbrush, cologne, emery board, clips and flossers. (mostly miniatures)

Wallet purse with money and credit cards, travel cards etc

    In a different zip pocket

gadget bag: tiny handlens, corkscrew, penknife, sweeteners, hairbrush (all miniature)
    salt and pepper
    spare earrings
    ALSO
sewing kit that fits in a tiny purse
    paper diary
    pen and pencil
    mobile phone
    waterbottle

Yes if WW3 should hit or my ship get wrecked, I'll be ready!

PS we travel a lot: if ever I wind up in a foreign city without my luggage, I can still brush my teeth and improvise picnic food. This has happened!

    - Deodorant
    - Chapstick
    - Hairbrush
    - The letter from my 20 week scan last week
    - The test report from my failed driving test a while back

Packing for a trip so I just went through mine yesterday:

    Cash purse
    Medication purse
    Umbrella
    Sunglasses
    Pens
    Keys
    Vogue
    Book
    Passport
    Make up bag
    Glasses case
    Emergency pads and tampons
    IPod
    Earphones
    Mirror
Lucky coal (which I'm sure doesn't work but it's become a comfort)
    Charger power pack

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 600 ✭✭✭SMJSF

    mine isn't that exciting:
    Keys.
USB cable and plug for phone.
    purse.
I say 30+ random stray coffee cards.
    receipts.
    5 lighters.
    empty bottles of E-liquid.
2 pairs of broken headphones - I keep them in the bag to remind me to get a new pair!
    sweet wrappers.
sheets of coding from a web design course I'm attending.
USB key for the web course.
    a broken phone case.

I usually just dump everything I think I need into a bag 10 minutes before I leave to go anywhere.
I change handbag I say more than 3 times a week depending on the outfit! So everything is disorganised!

I now share my bag with two babas so it's usually: wallet, phone, keys, maybe lip balm, pad/tampon, wipes, bottle, water cup, 1 nappy for each, muslin, spare bib, hats for the littles(depending on time of the year), snack, book/toy for toddler. If I'm travelling solo I travel as light as possible so usually first five items and kindle and headphones.

    Laptop bag.

    Laptop and mini laptop
    Wallet
    Phone
    Various ID badges and lanyards
    Two blue pens
Painkillers, couple of tampons, pack of tissues.
    Sunglasses
    Diary

Why are people carrying around makeup... Doing it on the bus on the way to work, or are you all putting it on several times a day?

I'm usually so late that I'll only get a chance to put it on when I'm on the bus or when I get into work. Same reason for my glasses case as I keep my contacts in it.

It's also handy to keep in case I do have last minute plans to meet someone after work and want to top it up.

Some of you are nuts! Your shoulders must ache with the weight!

I use a bag liner and just swap that between bags when I change them, bags are my weakness and I might use 3 different ones in any given week.

    Wallet
    Phone
Makeup bag containing mirror, lip balm, tampon/liner, paracetamol, plasters, travel toothbrush/paste and travel size floss, small packet of wipes, hand sanitiser, small hand cream and eye drops.
    Hairbrush
    Keys
    Tissues
    I.D.
    Pen and small leather diary
    Glasses case
    Kindle or small tablet
    MP3 player/earphones

A bag liner is a great idea, where do you get them?

A bag liner is a great idea, where do you get them?

Amazon do a huge range of bag liners in various sizes.

Makes the bag switchover very easy and keeps the inside of your bags spotless.

    5 nappies.
    Scented nappy bags.
    Changing mat.
    Wipes.
    Vaseline.
    2 soothers in a box.
    Soother cleaning wipes.
    Tissues.
    A burp cloth.
    3 disposable bibs.
2 changes of clothes for my daughter.
An extra cardigan, socks and hat for her.
2 hand sanitizers (gel and a spray).
A little bag with a mini baby shampoo, body wash, moisturizer, baby hair brush, baby nail clippers and file, nasal aspirator and thermometer in it.
    Carseat/breastfeeding cover.
    A few extra breast pads.
    Pantyliners.
Face powder with a mirror in the compact.
    Carmex.
    Hairbrush.
    Wallet.
    Keys.
    A pen.
    Some fun-sized chocolate bars.
    Earphones.
    Phone charger.

It's funny because I used to fill bags of the same size with only my stuff but now it's all baby stuff and just things that I will actually use. Though I don't think I've ever taken the powder compact out or used the earphones.

    Currently,

    Scarf
    Strepsils
    Letter from Specsavers
    Loose change
    A Pen
    Sunglasses
    Two open packets of gum
    Two paper grips

Onto of that, my purse, ipod and keys would be in there. But I'm not taking my handbag to work tomorrow. I don't like to carry my life around, I like as little as possible haha
