Film Snobs!!!

I hate snobbery of any kind to be honest but movie snobs really irritate me ......... the way they over-analyse what is supposed to be entertainment and look down on anybody who enjoys the "wrong" types of movies.

They despise anything labelled as a Blockbuster movie (usually without having actually seen the movie itself!?!!) yet make certain film-makers almost bulletproof to any kind of criticism ......... and actually pity you if you haven't watched/enjoyed Jean-Luc Godard's Alphaville or Tarkovskiy's version of Solaris.

Another trait they have is insisting on calling foreign language movies by their "official" title ......... yes I know Pedro Almodovar's All About My Mother is titled Todo Sobre Mi Madre in Spain .......... but that's Spain ffs!!! It was released here with the title All About My Mother!!!

For me there are 4 types of people who watch movies ........

    1. Those who enjoyed the movie.
    2. Those who didn't like the movie.
    3. Those who like the movie but pretend they didn't because it's not the "right" kind of movie.
    4. Those who hated the movie but pretend they loved it because it's on the magic mysterious list of movies that true connoisseurs of film-making must love.

I hate the last two .......... rant over.

Why oh why can't people be more like me!!! Ahhhhhhhhhgggggh!

So basically you are snobby about people who articulate something more than "It was good" about films? The literary heritage of Ireland is safe in your hands...

No, I just hate as*holes who think they know more than the rest of us about movies ......... and scorn anybody who doesn't agree with their choices.

Seen Alphaville and Solaris many years ago - not sure how I'd react to them now though. Some things age in places in a way that's hard to ignore.

He was in the original. They've rebooted the franchise now with yer man out of the new star trek in the part.

In all seriousness, I don't know which way to vote in the poll, I don't dislike blockbusters or whatever just for being popular, I've seen nearly all the Marvel universe movies in the cinema, adored the hell out of Pacific Rim and I've always got time for the latest Mission Impossible, but on the other hand I do love a lot of foreign movies too! And you know, a load of foreign language movies aren't snorefests either, The Raid 1 & 2 are better action movies than anything America has done in years.

You can like a cheesy popcorn movie, AND enjoy foreign or arthouse cinema too.

Didn't go to see the latest reboot.

I'm not sure if I would classify me as a film snob but inevitablely I avoid most of the so called blockbuster movies as they are mostly crap. Just the same as I avoid most TV shows with canned laughter as if it is an indication of when to laugh.

I hadn't actually watched battleship Potemkin but I think I will now. Thanks op for the heads up.

I like good films but I don't think I'm superior because I do and I'm certainly not an asshole because I don't think Britney Spears should ever act again. I'd be fairly picky about what I watch and so what? Do you literally like absolutely any auld ****e out there? Surely you must be a fan of something specific, no? Only liking blockbusters and turning your nose up at French film, for example, would be a form of snobbery too. I can absolutely guarantee you turn your nose up at something and if you don't, you're an anomaly. I don't label people "arseholes" for liking something I don't - incredibly small-minded attitude.

Saw it two days ago, not quite as slick and funny as other Guy Ritchie films but nicely done. 4 stars.

It was great! Enjoyed it more than the last Bond outing even, it was gloriously 60's, and if you enjoyed the show Archer, it's right up your street.

I adore foreign films as they are realistic. Literally every Hollywood "romantic" movie pretty much has same story line. Someone meets someone else. They hate each other but by the end of the 90 mins they have fallen deeply in love. You watch a European love Film and it might 3 hours long. Yet at the end of it you dont know whether he/she was "the one".

I personally cant sit through a standard generic American love movie.

The hangover. 40 year old virgin. Etc etc are surely children's films?
My favourite film is le haine. (The hate) I wouldn't call myself a snob. I just have refined taste. I watch things like the fast and the furious but they are far from 'good' movies. Just mass appeal drivel.

Please do not show your children The Hangover or The 40 Year Old Virgin .......... you would know that yourself if you watched them ......... you can also knock Ted off the kid's list.

I hate film snobs and will judge a film based on the plot and quality of the acting.

I have a friend that is reverse snob but is snobby about it, if you get me. She only likes romantic comedies and that is it. Anything else that is vaguely different is a no no. She doesn't like actions or dramas and heaven forbid it be a foreign film. If something isn't mainstream she won't even consider it. Once another friend and me convinced her to go see Inception and she still brings it up to this day.

She is the exact same about music. In her opinion if it isnt in the top 20 or if a band aren't playing the O2 they can't be any good.

    I don't have one.

People enjoy other types of art, music, food, places, sex, drugs, cars, and internet sites than me or you. Try not to let it spoil your day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,731 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

I will probably fall into this category as I dismiss movies without having seen them. Not so much 'that's obviously a load of crap' as 'I am sure I would not like it.'

I like films that make me think. That's pretty much what I look for when choosing films.

What is annoying also is the 'if you don't like Transformers you must be a snob' attitude.

  • Moderators, Regional East Moderators Posts: 23,238 Mod ✭✭✭✭GLaDOS

Reverse snobbery is almost as bad tbh. If it's foreign/has subtitles/not lead by a famous actor some people wouldn't even consider it.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

This probably contradicts what I said previously but I think it's one thing to have an opinion on someone who likes what we consider to be crap films/music/tv but it's another thing completely to voice that opinion. We all judge but most of us manage to keep that judgement under wraps. Discounting people or labelling them arseholes for having different tastes to you is pretty unacceptable as well and is probably what you're trying to get at here. If a grown man of 40 told me his favourite band were Boyzone then by jiminey, I'd judge the hell out of him in my head but I'd be as nice as pie in person and we might even become friends. I wouldn't discount him as a person but I'd certainly label his taste in music as a heap of bollocks.
