Almera 06 Gearbox Problem

For the last week there's been a very loud whining noise coming from my car, I suspect it's the gearbox because about a month ago I was reversing out of a parking space and could not get it out of the reverse gear, I literally had to push as hard as I could to get it into first. This is still the case to this day.

Is the gearbox shot and is it only a matter of time before it dies?

    There's 230k on the odometer.

    More than likely.
A very common issue with these. If buying a replacement from a Breaker they will often sell you the box from a Primera....not a problem as long as it's not from the 1.8.

I'm actually surprised the gearbox has lasted 230k kms going by some of the horror stories on here and elsewhere online.

I'm in Kildare so I might give Naas Gearbox Centre a ring tomorrow.

€540 +vat for a replacement gearbox at Naas Gearbox Centre with a 6 month warranty. Seems reasonable to me?

Perhaps a little on the high side. Give Bohernabreena Gearbox centre as a comparison.

The €540 includes fitting, oil and courtesy car. Seems to be cheap compared to some stories I've read here and elsewhere online.

You will pay betwen €200/250 for a 'box from a breaker. This will not have any warranty (beyond it actually working fine when you fit it).
So unless you're willing/able to do the job yourself then the price quoted seems fairly OK, especially as it includes the loan of a car.

Wasn't aware a loan car was being included in that price. Seem more reasonable now.

Car totally bolloxed now. Gearbox seems to have crumbled to pieces and will no longer drive. No idea what to do now. It's going to cost about €200 hundred to tow it to someone.

    Hardly worth it, is it?
