I am just wondering, what is one of the most common spelling mistakes you encounter and how much does it bother you? I personally, can't stand when people mix up there, their and they're. Anybody else feel like this? Do you feel like correcting it each time you see it?

I can't believe the number of thread titles that are incorrect, like ones about spelling that are, in reality, about grammar

Collage. I've had a rant about this before, anyone attending third level education should be able to spell the word 'college'.

I blame peoples reliance on auto correct for the appalling spellings which are so prolific these days. Their brains no longer are in use when it comes to writing and breaking up a word they are stuck on in order to spell it correctly is foreign to people now.....Facebook and Boards is full of it. Grammar doesn't really bother me but the spelling mistakes are brutal.

I have corrected people with dyslexia in the past.

And this was why I used to be annoyed by spelling and grammar pedants, but now I'm more annoyed by people who use dyslexia as an excuse when someone pulls them up on their careless mistakes in their writing. There is no excuse for anyone nowadays to struggle with their spelling at least.

Grammar may be excusable as there are different forms of dyslexia and the technology isn't quite perfected yet to pick up on the nuances of sentence structure, but some of the carelessness in writing I've seen? Not even a person who is dyslexic could reproduce those sorts of errors, and when it comes to literacy, they're also likely to spot it more quickly when a word doesn't look 'right'.

If you always struggle with those two words, why not take two minutes to learn them?

What's your opinion on punctuation? Isn't it annoying when people don't use commas correctly?

I also hate when people spell Gaeilge wrong.

Generally they don't bother me, as they can vary depending on how the statement, or question is said.

Except and accept. They mean exactly the opposite to each other so it makes complete nonsense of a sentence if you get them wrong.

The taught/thought mix up - think of teach and taught, think and thought.

The their/there confusion - all places, here, there and everywhere.
Except that people mix up where and were now, so that confuses things even more.

I may be wrong, but I think ArseBurger may be referring to your slight oversight in your own opening post -

I thought you had done it purposely myself, as a sort of ironic troll post that would have spelling and grammar pedants up in arms... :pac:

    You're/your.

    I hate it.

Boyfriend sent me a text the other day after I helped him with something, saying "Your so smart. I love you."

    I texted back this: "*You're."

    He wasn't very happy.

Don't worry, he'll soon get sick of you and dump you so you won't have to put up with his poor spelling/grammar any longer.

I used to always love the "I put the sex in dyslexia" joke! :-D

I know of people who for say (and spell) "background" as "backround". That's always annoyed me!

Taught and thought get frequently mixed up.

I think using there, they're and their and its and it's in the correct contexts are probably the most common culprits for people to mess up on though, for whatever reason.

Just saw this on another thread and it reminded me of how much I hate it - when people use Americanised spellings.

    For example - AmericaniZed.

    "Shirley" instead of "Charolais"
If I see an ad on donedeal for a "Shirley" it lowers my expectations of the animal for some reason :D
I think only the farmers will relate to this one :P

The reverse is even worse, I went on a blind date in Termonfeckin with what I thought was a chungwan called Shirley, only to end up buying a fuppin' big heifer, so I did!

Seems like an awful lot to spend on a first date. Would she not have had chicken?
