    What's your favourite Christmas Advert??

One that brings back so many memories for me is the Penny's advert.

What do you think is the best channel to see them on? I'd say ITV during Downton Abbey will have lots.

Littlewoods Christmas ad was just on Gold :-)

I saw the Lidl Christmas ad not long ago. It's the same as last year's ad.

I saw the Lidl Christmas ad not long ago. It's the same as last year's ad.

Some companies put their old ads as a placement while they're finalising their new ads. It happened last year with some. The ads the second half of November were slightly different from the first last year.

I actually prefer it when companies use the same ads rather than have new ones. They become more a part of the tradition. I like the new ones too but it's lovely to see the familiar ones each year.

Scrap all that, I saw another Lidl ad and it's brilliant. Can't post a link. Go forth and find it, elves!

Asda Christmas ad got its first play tonight visually brilliant but the song is terrible. Change the song for a Christmas tune and you've got such a better ad.

I agree, would prefer a Christmas song. It's still a great ad though.

    Lidl!

What a missed opportunity. The song detracts from the visuals. "You gotta play that Sax."

Thank you! They certainly missed a trick with it. Like the message of the ad is perfect.

It reminds me Vodafone's ad that had the Rhymth of the Night by Bastille as the song on their Christmas ad a couple of years ago, their mentality was it'll stand out more as everyone else will have Christmas songs.

I hate that mentality a good ad will stand out even with Christmas music, it's only going to air for 6 weeks of the year and after that every ad outside of those 6 weeks are going to have non-Christmas music.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭iguana

A Christmas ad has to get you in the feels and that song stops the ad from doing that. The song doesn't even necessarily have to be Christmas song if done right, Lidl use "Bring Me Sunshine" but make it work. If a song has the right emotional impact it can still make you feel festive. That Asda songs make me feel like a coke addled 30 something frantically trying to have a great Christmas even though I have no emotional ties to anyone in my life.

Still one of my all time favourites, the little girl with the corn flakes :)

Have you seen the new PayPal one yet? It's caused quite a bit of controversy so far with parents saying it's ruined Christmas for kids.

Oh that's moronic. I can see why the person who wrote it thought it was cute but it will upset more people than it will encourage to shop online. I'm glad S will only be 3 for Christmas, if he was much older that would give the game away. A bit like the one for Littlewoods from a few years back that showed 'mum' giving the presents instead of Santa. http://www.theguardian.com/media/2011/nov/25/littlewoods-christmas-ad-complaints

The Burberry Festive Film. It's not Christmassy but it's worth a watch to see Julie Walters and George Ezra! And that Beckham child is a cutie.

Don't know how to post a link but I just loved the o2 Christmas ad from a few years ago with the "winter song" in it and everyone walking on air. It was just beautiful, one of my all time fav Christmas ads!!

Lidl are off to a strange start.

This year, nothing says Christmas like a single-serve chicken & mushroom pie, sold throughout the year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 278 ✭✭Westeros

They don't make em like this anymore.
I can still remember watching this in the old kitchen as a child, hearing the music and knowing the Clydesdale horses were coming :)
    An absolute classic imo.

PayPal have agreed to only show it after 9pm, and rightly so, horrible advert. There was about 300 complaints to ad authorities after its first showing in the UK. Why can't they just have a bit of cop on.

Thinking about it they could have used the ad to reinforce the idea of Santa. Have it that the older boy keeps expecting the parents to slip away for a day's shopping and when they don't but he still gets presents, he knows Santa is real. Then have a subtle nod to the fact that Paypal made it possible that only adults watching would understand. Job done, cute ad, Santa is real and parents who don't shop online might actually be convinced to try it.

New Boots ireland Christmas Ad 2015.

I like the music and it is quite Christmassy - but missing that special something I think.

I was just about to post that one! It's nice and sparkly but I think it needs to be a bit cosier or something. That probably makes no sense. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭iguana

Yeah it's a bit slick. I like last year's one with the (guy in the red) hoodie who was actually being Santa, though that one took a while to grow on me.

Eta: Actually that was 2 years ago. Last year was the nurse coming home after her overnight Christmas shift to find all her extended family up waiting for her. They both had a bit more heart.

You know what it's feels too modern to me for a Christmas ad if that makes sense. Too over produced and polished looking.

    Their 2013 ad

    And 2014 ad

    Were so much better.

it's very nice but I don't think it's as good as previous years! I think John Lewis have themselves under a lot of pressure now to outdo the previous year all the time!

I'm not sure about it. It feels like they are cashing in on "The Martian". And unlike the penguin one last year when the Penguin got a mate or the snowman one a few years ago the ending of this one feels bittersweet.

Like a few others here I'm not too sure about the John lewis one for this year. It reminds me of Disney Up with the old man and the balloons! It may grow on me but not my favourite from John lewis.

Came home from the supermarket to the Mrs. bawling crying. I thought something serious had happened. When I asked her wtf, I got "The John Lewis Christmas Ad".

    Oh Lordy. :)

I'm not going to watch it.

Skat out of that before you draw the Star Wars lads on us. It's just children and their imagination playing on Christmas morning. :-)

Haha, seems the internet exploded on that one 4 days ago. :)

I get the sentiment of it, old and lonely at Christmas, but I think they should have ended it with a real life scenario like they usually do, so if the old man lived across the road from the kid, but still 'half a world away', on his own, and we see him opening a gift left on his doorstep from the little girl or something along those lines.

YES! Now that would have been a perfect way to end it, it'd give a real good feel factor to it, I still felt empty at the end, knowing the man was still alone up there on his own.
