WHO: bacon is 'as big a cancer threat as smoking'

    The whole article here (Telegraph)

Following reports that the WHO is expected to publish a report listing processed meat as a cancer-causing substance, experts have criticised suggestions that bacon and sausgages could be as dangerous as smoking.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) will publish a report on Monday on the dangers of eating processed meats.
It is expected to list processed meat as a cancer-causing substance, while fresh red meat is also expected to be regarded as bad for health, the Daily Mail said.
The classifications, by the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer, are believed to regard processed meat as "carcinogenic to humans", the highest of five possible rankings, shared with alcohol, asbestos, arsenic and cigarettes.

    cancer rates world map

    Islamic population of the world

*with the exception of Mexico, there seems to be a lot of similarity in both maps.. I wonder is it anything to do with the absence of pork in Islamic nation's diets? Im sure there must be a correlation.

So long as there is chicken, turkey and fish available, I wouldn't miss red meat.. I might even go vegetarian for a while.

Believe it or not there's probably 100s of people who die every year by choking on a piece of steak or something.

It's been known for some years that processed meat (esp sausages) are fundamentally bad for you. Michael Mosley did a programme on meat last year on the BBC which was a bit of an eye-opener when it came to this sort of thing. Not that it stops me of course (or him)
Professor Walter Willett, of the Harvard School of Public Health, heads a team that have been tracking the diets of tens of thousands of people for many years.

"We found that those who consumed higher amounts of red meat had a higher risk of total mortality, cardiovascular mortality and cancer mortality," he told me in the Harvard cafeteria, while I nonchalantly ate a large steak.

On the basis of one of the studies he co-authored - Red Meat Consumption and Mortality, published in Archives of Internal Medicine - he estimates regularly eating a small amount of unprocessed red meat (85g, around 3oz) is associated with a 13% increased risk of mortality, while eating a similar amount of processed red meat (a hot dog or two slices of bacon) is associated with a 20% increased risk.

Being alive just elevates your risk of getting cancer. This is meant to increase your chances of getting it, that is cancer busting. They can seriously do all the research about foods that they want but they can't research every individual on the planet. Different things like genetics and lifestyle could enhance your risk of getting cancer. I'd take what they say with a pinch of salt and have it on my bacon.

Death from car-bombs and other terrorist acts are probably far higher in islamic countries than in pork-eating countries. Not eating bacon causes terrorism.

So long as there is chicken, turkey and fish available, I wouldn't miss red meat.. I might even go vegetarian for a while.

It's your loss, I just had a bacon sangwidge and it was f***in delicious!

Im sure you could.. if you mean starting a smokery as a business.

It would be a great idea for a start-up business if it was properly researched....

'Healthy Irish Smoked Bacon' smoked over a 100% peat fire....*no carcinogens*

They eat a lot of Lamb in Muslim countries as far as I know -- that's a red meat.

Also being at the centre of the Old World probably meant a lot of dna converged there bringing diversity and eradicating many genetic conditions.

In the New World, Mexico is in the centre as well, possibly with the same result.

They seem to be referring to bacon, as in American streaky bacon. Not Irish bacon / rashers.

    Big difference.

Ones processed to bejaysus with god knows what meats, prob the most mechanically separated parts of a pig with added chemicals to create the flavoring and colours.

Where as reashers arent half as bad, at least theyre propper cuts of meat that are just cured / treated /smoked and what have you.

they 'ammonia wash' meat in the USA

Joking aside, unfortunately not, some chemos can lead to secondary cancers, leukemias etc. :(

Safer to start baking the smokes.

yes, I looked into lamb alright.. the WHO report due on Monday lists specifically pork (processed) as being a leading cause of cancer.

Yes processed meats may increase our risk of cancer but based on the average life expantancy map we are still living longer. Maybe if they stated eating bacon they might live longer !!!

    http://www.worldlifeexpectancy.com/world-life-expectancy-map

All it proves is that if anyone takes a single set of statistics and uses a world map, it can be used to prove anything.

hi... I posted 2 world maps in the OP. Dont you think there could be a correlation between the 2 sets of data?

While these people may be professionals and know far more about the topic than I ever will, that is just their opinion and I think we should eat more bacon and steak. We're both entitled to our opinions so we'll just have to agree that both possibilities should be considered.

There could. But the point is well made about life expectancy, many cancers arrive in old age, if you don't live that long you don't get cancer. Something like prostate cancer may have been less common in the past in Ireland because the men concerned had already died of TB.

It might be more interesting to look at different European counties, many of which have their own slightly different processed meats. Some of these processes may increase cancer, some not.

What next ? the world health organisation says that breathing in fresh air will cause cancer .

The amount of drugs they inject into animals as it is is the real worry while folk eat the infected animal. We need to fatten them all up so we can make more profit so we'll inject this and that into them and change their genetics to do so. It's getting to the stage now that everything is so contaminated by man/woman that nothing is healthy any-more.

Look at that amazing sizzling chunk of meat on the barby encapsulated with luscious herbs and delicious spices while holding back the drewl with a napkin, But it will give you cancer so it's better not to eat this delicious smelling food substance, yeah pull the other one, where's the fecking plate, where's the sauce.

When every-thing in the world is contaminated by man/woman then why care ? just enjoy the succulent. Can I please have some more you say ? well of course you can, enjoy.

hi... I posted 2 world maps in the OP. Dont you think there could be a correlation between the 2 sets of data?

Yes I did see both maps......however if you put your Muslim countries map alongside my life expantancy map you could reach the conclusion that not eating bacon reduces their life expantancy.

As I said before, if any of us use limited data we can prove whatever we choose. Cancer rates per country is a lot more complex issue than reducing it down to one particular food or a particular religious ethos. If levels of healthcare, smoking rates, salt intake etc were brought into the research, it may not make bacon elimination from our diet as the magic bullet to cure a high proportion of cancer in the western world.

Remember a few weeks ago when it was "sugar is as bad as smoking", then there the "sitting is the new smoking" headlines and now it's bacon.

All this has served to do is make me think smoking mustn't be so bad after all and seeing as I'm not giving up sugar or sitting or indeed bacon why am I so anti smoking?

The thing is that they can probably easily enough amend the nature of meat processing to remove 80% of the risk, not so with smoking.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,766 ✭✭✭Bongalongherb

What makes me laugh with most folk is that they have whined for so long to stop people smoking but yet are happy to breath in carbon monoxide - dioxide every day they are out walking or jogging. You'll get your healthy dose of cancer there.

The persons that are having that big sunday roast... open the window and let the succulent aroma spread throughout the planet.

Budget 2016 will now be introducing a €2 increase on a packet of rashers. It is hoped that by 2020 the price of a packet will be in line with a packet of 20 cigs.

How many bacon farmers and their family members have died from cancer? Serious question.

These sorts of reports could cripple the industry. While the majority here can joke, many people will actually stop eating it now.

It is really stark to see that the wealthiest First World countries have the highest rates of cancer, sometimes three times the rate of the developing world.
