Austrialian Guide to Healthy Eating

    I came across the Australian dietary guidelines recently and they seem pretty good to me.

    Nutrition Australia unveiled their new, and a much improved food pyramid this year.
    It's based off their nutrition guidelines released in 2013.

    Their guidelines are the product of a review of approx. 55,000 scientific papers worldwide.

    What do people here think of them ?

    Anyone had a look at them ? Surprising no one has seeing they seem to be one of the best national guidelines out there at the moment.

    Nice one.

    It's only a small thing but I really like the removal of the sh*t you should be avoiding from the pyramid and putting an X over it.

    Still acting like fats are something to be feared. Great to see fruit and veg at the bottom.

    Not really, the top of the pyramid contains them in quite a few different forms.

    A graphic can't explain everything though, the guidelines are more detailed.

    Agree about the fruit and veg, and I'd like to see exercise shown along the bottom as well.

    Better than previous efforts and in fairness it's hard to cover all bases.

    On the healthy fats, not sure they have it right. Essential fatty acids are all polyunsaturated but we need very little of them, some evidence they are not healthy at all in high doses.

    Insofar as I can remember from previous reading the control group and experimental group diet was identical except saturated fat was used for cooking in control group and polyunsaturated in experimental group. Also there was significantly more smokers in control group. Chris Masterjohn has a good discussion or two on it

    It's covering healthy eating though. Not health in general.

    Well the latest version on their website is called the healthy living pyramid, and includes a reminder at the bottom to be active every day, so looks like they picked up on it.

    As their board reviewed 55,000 scientific papers on diet, I'm pretty sure they do have it right, and no where do they recommend high does, they are at the top of the pyramid. Someone else was complaining earlier there wasn't enough fat on the pyramid. The pyramid is only a quick visual graphic, if you are really interested you need to read their guidelines, which are over 200 pages.

    Hmmm Quackery, or the Australian board of experts that reviewed 55,000 scientific studies to come up with the guidelines. Hard to choose.
