How much for a jaguar 4.2l engine?

    looking at a jag this weekend with a 4.2l and I have a friend lined up who is going to take the engine out and put in a 2 litre diesel engine, similar to the jag on done deal a month ago

    Was wondering what the going rate might be for the engine, might just scrap it if its too much hassle

    Would you not just leave the car alone and let somebody who'll appreciate and respect the car to buy it?

    If I was selling that jag and you told me what you were doing I'd be very tempted to refuse to sell it to you on principle.

    its in excellent condition 70k on the clock , luxury interior, perfect paint job. Same could be said for your celica I suppose regarding the breakers :)

    Unless its from the 1980's or earlier the work to get a diesel engine to actually function in a previously petrol car would be massive, fuel lines, tank, pump, internal and engine bay wiring looms, clocks, exhaust system, immobiliser nightmares.... don't see it being economical for anyone who cant do it themselves

    yes, will have my trustee budget tyres on the car too. Warming to the idea of using the engine as a coffee table similar to top gear.

    at least that way people can admire the engine block than it being stuck under a bonnet, imo

    The straight 6 wouldnt make such a good table, you would need the V engine to get the hard on.

    The conversion on this would be so expensive and complex that you could probably run the 4.2 for 2-3 years for the equivalent cost. I would recommend buying the Jag and enjoying it at the manufacturer intended. Keep it relatively short term then enjoy something else.

    Even if you only drive it slowly the 4.2 jag engine will be superior to any diesel lump you have fitted. Smoother, quieter and probably more reliable (bound to be a lot of teething problems with a conversion like this).

    What are you driving at the moment PowerPants?

    OP has a habit of making little sense in his posts. This continues that trend.

    Even if this were true, to actually get a diesel in a modern petrol car would be far more than what you'd pay for the car.

    The incompatability of the ecu, wiring, autobox, immobiliser,fuel lines are just examples of how this is total dreamland nonsense.

    Which engine is it - the XJI6 or the AJ-V8? The latter is a bullet-proof V8 with the good, steel timing-chain tensioners as OE, and it would be a much better stunt to convert it to LPG. <Harrumph> As opposed, y'know, to replacing it with a pot-bellied stove. :D
