I think concentrate on the game. Celebrate O'Connell some other time.

I for one won't cringe in the slightest.

yes there'll be other, more appropriate opportunities to thank him

Let the lads thank him by winning the game.

I think it's a great idea, not so great if Argentina are pounding away at our line at the time though.

    Utterly inadequate.

I think it's an awful idea. He's not even finished playing rugby. Chances are he'll finish his career in a champions cup final or lions tour.

I'm sure he'll be making a public appearance with the team after the world cup where he can be cheared

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,585 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

Jesus H Christ. The fawning over O'Connell is reaching ridiculous levels, didn't we already do all this **** on his last game in the Aviva? And his last Munster game? And his last time coming out of Lidl?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 929 ✭✭✭whatawaster81

Yeah jaysus lads he's not dead, there'll be a better more opportune time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,466 ✭✭✭kuang1

Standing ovation is a little sombre (morose even?) for my liking. It's almost too respectful to put any FEAROFGOD in anyone, and at 4/5 minutes gone on Sunday, I'd rather be playing my part in letting the Pumas know that they're playing against 16 men.

Why not chant his name in unison with a verocity that he himself would be proud of?

    I personally dont like it
A minutes applause is usually reserved for a death, like the Mayo minor or Jerry Collins

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,406 ✭✭✭sjb25

My first reaction to it is it's a bit cringey or even morbid like as has been said usual done for a death or sumtin

I can see why they are suggesting it would be nice to be able so say thanks etc as a group of fans but dunno don't like the idea of this

I heard some people were planning an applause between the 4th and 5th minutes in honour of the boards.ie rugby moderators.

So if I hear any clapping that's what I'll assume it's for. :)

The round of applause is a bit morbid but everyone screaming his fear of God speech at the same time now that's a fitting thing to do

Most likely the same bunch of clowns that 'brought the house down' singing Ireland's Call in a Cardiff pub last Sunday.

Maybe we could ask Joe Schmidt to present Paulie with the stuffed head of Dave Kearney in a glass case after the game while we're at it. Just for the memories, like.

    Ha!

Reminds me of when Drico came off in his last home game replaced by McFaddan, and McFaddan wrote on twitter afterwards:

"Amazing standing ovation when I came onto the pitch today.. thanks!" or something to that effect.

Let's be honest. Joe.ie are only thinking of the publicity and clicks to their website and that's it. F**king Joe.ie!!!!

    He didn't die

I'm sure Paul O' Connell would hate that idea!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,758 ✭✭✭RedemptionZ

If I was POC, I'd prefer if people didn't do it. A bit smalltown to celebrate an individual player like that when we have so many other great ones too. Not to mention it's completely inappropriate to do it at a World Cup QF.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,454 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

All I'm taking from this thread is that O'Connell is actually dead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,816 ✭✭✭corny

    I really hate this nonsense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,681 ✭✭✭✭P_1

It was a nice touch brought in during the summer GAA matches for the folk killed in Berkeley, the two plumbers and the Mayo minor player who died. The common denominator here is that they all died tragically. POC didn't, he suffered a pretty damn painful hamstring tear but he's still living and breathing.

By all means go mad and chant his name or quote from the famous Fear of God speech, but don't bloody clap as if the man died.

I know because he is not dead.

POC is no longer on the team. And are you saying if you're not all in for this you're not supporting the team?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 241 ✭✭Stranger Danger

I've very little doubt that POC would consider this to be an absolutely awful idea.

I think this is a stupid idea - there must be much better ways of honouring POC the legend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,648 ✭✭✭desertcircus

It's a World Cup quarter-final, not Paul O'Connell's testimonial. A minute's applause should be reserved as a mark of respect in the wake of genuine tragedies, not a player retiring a month early because of injury.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,222 ✭✭✭DellyBelly

I think it is a fantastic idea. It is the least he deserves. I think it should be done for the whole game for him such is his greatness. I won't be there but I'm pushing for our local to do it in his honour. I think he deserves it...long live the king

Doing in in the pub is monumentally pointless.

Your local what? Village idiot? I'm sure he will if you cross his palm with silver.

Like people who shush you in the pub when a kick is being taken...

You're watching them and they can see you

As an idea, it's about the worst one anyone could think of. Sounds great on paper until you start to think it through. Even the little things like exactly when this should happen and the sheer randomness of it. Strange enough if there's nothing happening on the pitch, but what would it be like for the players if they're defending deep in their 22 and the crowd stands up and starts clapping?

There'll be a match going on. The players don't need a distraction like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,714 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

The two teams will probably tear into each other, be lucky if the fans notice the 5th minute at all. Unless of course there are more event junkies than rugby supporters there, in which case half will be mexican waving and the other half will have their back turned to the pitch taking selfies.

Personally I dont think O'Connell will ever play again full stop, Mourad will terminate the contract if it looks like 8 or 9 months will be lost. But overall the proposed tribute is more appropriate for a death so should be skipped

So how do you think the player who has taken POC's place on the team will feel when he hears the crowd clapping a player who isn't even on the pitch?

Will it be a massive boost to his self-belief? Will it inspire him to play better, knowing that he's only been picked to start because of Paulie's injury?

Or he may just not give a crap because he's getting stuck in to the start of a World Cup Quarter final.

How about we just win the world cup for him? I know a minutes applause would be better but sure he'll just have to do with a World Cup.

No, i was saying the opposite actually. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
Let's concentrate on what's going on out on the pitch

If I was at the game I'd join in but tbh I think it's a crazy idea. I think applause like this should be reserved for something like the death of players like Jerry Collins or Nevin Spence.
