Would you feel safe working in the new World Trade Centre?

I watched the film The Walk recently about the guy who tightrope-walked between the top of the twin towers. And it got me thinking about the new tower they've built in its place, and how to be quite honest I wouldn't feel safe working there now, for obvious reasons. Would you?

Yeah, sure why not. Box cutters are banned on planes now.

You don't want to work there in case you get a mad impulse to tight rope of it?

All planes are now fitted with a high security door to the cockpit.

Making it impossible for someone to take control of the aircraft from the captain.

    Oh, wait....

Depends if they fill the building with explosives then fake a plane crashing into it..

Hang on someone at the door...

I don't think so. We went to ground zero when we were in NY and it was such an eerie feeling, I wouldn't usually be one to be getting bogged down with atmosphere but you felt like something terrible had happened there and I don't think I'd like to go and actually work there every single day

Isn't that film called 'Man on Wire' or is it a different film about the same subject?

Man on Wire is very interesting btw.

I think your feeling might be right.

Id imagine it d be one of the safer places..America would look fair stupid if the same buildings got flattened twice..

Course I wouldn't mind working there. Things have moved on massively since 9/11 (good and bad aspects I suppose) but you can't let something that happened 15 years ago stop you.

That's like asking "will you be afraid to do your Christmas shopping up North this year because of what happened during the Troubles?"

Fear and intimidation among the general population is exactly what terrorist groups hope for.

    I would not work there.
What would be worse than 9/11? Well... terrorists targetting it again. The original attack killed a few thousand, shocked the world and took security to a new level.

Destroying the new building would be even a bigger statement. So no I wouldnt work there.

You'd need a small nuke to bring down this new one, built like a brick **** house apparently.

I visited the ground zero site when construction was almost complete of the new World Trade Center One. The new building looks like a fortress.

Apparently, they've built a number of additional safety features into it, 3' reinforced concrete around all the stairwells and their pressurized, the west facing outside is covered in blast resistant plastic as opposed to the glass used on the other sides, a lot of redundancy in the steel framework, etc.

You don't think that flight security nor building methods and design have improved since then.

Anyway, targeting the WTC again would be too obvious a target, if the terrorists do strike again they will think of something very different.

Different film, dramatising the subject of the documentary.

Yes, but only because of the sterling work of Jim Corr.

Also, I wouldn't go to work on November 9th because if there is another attack, it'll be by terrorists who realise that Americans can't work a ****ing calendar.

You're right that another attack would most likely be else where.

But let's look at that titanic 2 ship that's meant to be in construction. If someone didn't want to go on that, that's superstition. It had an unfortunate accident.
Problem with the twin towers is that it was a terrorist attack.

Personally I wouldn't work there. Doesn't matter if the building is secure. (sure what building can be) you could have some nutcase suicide bomber blow himself up in the lobby. Wouldn't hurt the building but still kill people.

This is never going to happen again, at least in the same way as 11/9/01,
Air security is too good, and even if they did manage to hijack a plane it would be shot down double quick.

If you'd worry about that, you may as well never get into a car again
cos its 1000000 times more likely you'll be killed that way.

Great doc, and a film about the same thing now with that lad from Batman ... robin..

Why would you feel any less safe there than in the next highest building in NY.

Its not like the went again and tried for the empire state for example.

I'd be more concerned over a fee fanatic ISIS nutters breaching a nuclear powerplant on European soul tbh

The Mrs was paranoid about going to the top of it recently.
She also was afraid of flying American Airlines (a connecting internal flight).
We got $1000 cash before leaving and it came to €911 with the fx rate :D to further fuel her fears.

She spent an hour at the top and flew with AA.

    Take that terrorists! :pac:

Safer there than in a school in some state where its every good muricans duty to carry a machine gun.

    i love how MH370 gets tied into 9/11 :D

but then they did manage to tie Saddam to it, so maybe...

I'd feel safe but I don't think I'd feel comfortable working there since it's right by a mass grave...not just that. The Museum and the shop up the street selling tacky 9/11 souvenirs along with the tourists taking selfies by the reflecting pools makes the place feel kind of surreal. It's a monument to the apathy of mankind...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,636 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Crinklewood

    It was planes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 24,465 ✭✭✭✭darkpagandeath

Why would you not ? The original world trade centres were only designed to take hits from the largest planes of the day nothing like what hit them. The were designed to take 1 accidental strike. They were not designed to take deliberate strikes of jets on full power.

Ya I'd feel safe. But if the owner suddenly increased the buildings insurance valuation, the way the last guy conveniently did before the towers came down. Then I'd probably hand in my notice pronto or buy a parachute for myself.
