To be honest I never really believed this would happen, but he will probably still fight the extradition.

Anyway this is going to be interesting. I'll get the popcorn

    RTE:

The former Anglo Irish Bank CEO David Drumm has been arrested in the United States.

US Marshalls arrested him in Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon on foot of an extradition warrant.

The Government here had requested his extradition from the US earlier this year to face proceedings in Ireland.

He will remain in custody pending a court hearing in Boston on Tuesday.

I hope he sings like a canary to save his own skin. People are still voting for criminals in this country.
Michéal Martin is still leader of Fianna Faíl and he was an accomplice to it all.
    It's laughable.

Pleased to hear this news. Drumm deserves a very lengthy jail sentence for his part in ruining this country's economy.

A b@stard of the highest order.

OP, I'm sick and stuck in my gaff on a Saturday night while watching a near endless snapchat stream of all my mates out on the lash, and yet you've just made my week with this thread :D

    Oh happy day :D:D:D

If it even goes to trial that is.
Likely get a suspended sentence first timer in all.

Get the feeling this might not last thread wise

I hope he comes back here so we can throw the book at him. 6 months suspended sentence and half days community service, that'll learn him.

We should probably all say nice things about him or he'll just get his trial set aside claiming that it's impossible to get a fair hearing due to adverse publicity.

    Of course he is !!

I think the tapes have him hung , drawn and quartered:)
Wonder who else is soiling their pants at the news :)

I dont believe he will do any time for this. But at least they are trying to get him to see justice. Its not much...and it is very late, but it is a start.

Pity that the U.S. Marshall sent wasn't Raylan Givens, allowing him 24 hours to get out of town :pac:

Suspended sentence or six months in an open prison if found guilty.

No idea why he did a runner. Does he not know that Ireland looks after his kind?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 103 ✭✭Hurtbuthealing

Not sure about this suspended sentence , be looked after by his own claptrap.
Three of his former colleagues are currently serving sentences in the Joy, and for far less serious charges than he is likely to face.

It it's taken this long to get the case to the point of arrest, it suggests it is an extraordinarily difficult one. And no doubt one that will be fought hard and for a long time. The first interesting battle on his return will involve bail, but presume he will get it and have to surrender his passport...but if he fights extradition that might colour the Court's view.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,452 ✭✭✭ads20101

And you don't think that the courts view isn't already coloured?

Oh they are. He may well face a certain...prejudice.

As anyone who has sat in on cases in the Four Courts or even Circuit and District Courts would tell you, they are kinda hard on banks and bankers, they have to jump through hoops in many applications. I have seen Judges tear strips off the legal teams for the banks, I have seen applications flung out on the flimsiest grounds etc.

Course those who don't have an iota have this nonsense idea that the Judges like the banks and bankers! You can only laugh at the ignorance.

Why does this happen? I know what my parents political leanings are, but I don't know or care the history of who they voted for in every election since they were old enough to vote. They wouldn't have always voted for the same party every election anyway, because you know, they could think! And how they voted in 1980 is in no way relevant to how I will vote 35 years later. Politics in Ireland in some ways mirrors religious indoctrination in Ireland.

yup, the older generation in Ireland are not very good at embracing change. Thats why they are considered a very conservative bunch. But its also human nature I suppose.

It appears he's facing 30 charges and the file was sent over in January.(source:indo)
Of course we won't know the number of charges until his hearing on tuesday.
I doubt whether he'll walk with this. They have the taped conversations which are damming.

I don't think the U.S. is going to go out of its way to protect Drumm, as he had previously attempted to file for bankruptcy there in a suit that was dismissed as fraudulent.

Under the Doctrine of Speciality, the U.S. has some discretion as to the charges that Drumm could face in Ireland - can't see them being particularly lenient there.

Have to laugh at the correction at the end of The Guardian's article though.
This article was corrected on 11 October 2015. It previously used the abbreviation AIB for Anglo Irish Bank. AIB is a different bank.

Yes, The Guardian. Yes it is.

If he is innocent, why did he run off to the U.S like a coward, so?
Whatever about the leniency of the Irish judicial system, if he is extradited he wont get back into the U.S (where his family have made their life) so that will be his biggest fear I would imagine.

No sympathy, he comes across as being unbelievably arrogant.

To you and everyone else doubting that he'll do time....... We can't say much lest we prejudice upcoming court proceedings (I'd hate to be the one responsible for him getting off, wouldn't you? ) but given that FitzPatrick's subordinates are doing time for following his instructions, and given that his previous trial was described by the judge as "Hamlet without its prince" due to Drumm's absence, I'd personally be unbelievably optimistic. ;)

Actually that is a good point. When would we not be able to discuss this case on boards?
    Now?
    When he has been extradited?
When he has been charged in ireland?

Well in terms of official Boards rules, ones the matter is sub judice, which I believe refers to the beginning of the case rather than mere charging.

I'd be more concerned about some asshat lawyer standing up in court with a print-out of this and other threads and saying "You see, your honour, how can we possibly find an unbiased jury for this poor maligned soul?"

I'm choosing my own words carefully anyway. I'm delighted that he has been charged, and if he is found guilty, I'm reasonably confident of a custodial sentence given precedents set during previous Anglo trials.

EDIT: I should also point out that if he is extradited, it's unlikely that he will face a courtroom before 2017 at the earliest, given Seanie's trial has been delayed until next summer and the courts are understandably anxious not to have consecutive Anglo trials too close together, lest it give the defence grounds to argue for a mis-trial because of adverse media coverage of the previous trial.

The trials should have started with the people at the top of the tree, and work there way down.

Not having bank accounts seems to be quiet common. Sure Bertie didn't have one either.

Why would you trust dem banks with your money when you can put it safely under your mattress?
