[FONT=&quot]After arriving Sunday, with the equipment inspection/official practice/opening ceremony held yesterday, today the Championship kicks off with the 24 Target Unmarked round. The format is an Unmarked round and then a Marked round. This decides the top 16 archers to go on to the Eliminations rounds where they are whittled down to four which then slug it out for the medals.

    The complete programme is below.

It's been a harsh couple of days. Between yesterday's Qualification round cut-off and today's Elimination round, all Irish archers are now out of the competition.
Each group of archers has been whittled down to four from a starting 16 this morning.
The first Elimination round of 12 targets brought the number from 16 to 8 and the second Elimination round halved that number to 4.
Semi-finals have determined the pairings for the gold and bronze finals on Saturday.

    Irish archers finished 19th in the Men's Barebow; 13th in the Women's Barebow; 19th in Men's Recurve; 15th in Women's Recurve; 16th in Women's Compound; 23rd and 28th in the Men's Compound.
We had no archers in the Junior section of the competition.
The participation at the European Championship is such that the level of competition and standard is very similar the Worlds. The placings must be seen in that light.

It is the first time for a number of years that Irish archers have competed internationally in WA field archery and with such a large contingent.
It comes ahead of Ireland hosting the World Field Archery Championships in Kilruddery, Co Dublin, next year and on the foot of Irish archers representing their country in the World archery 3D Championships in Terni, Italy, earlier this year.

It takes time, planning, practice, finance, commitment and even more time for a country to work its archers up the ranking in these competitions.
Countries that consistently have archers place very highly, Sweden, Italy and Spain, for example, have a very strong national back up to the field archery team. This can include a strong national association to help fund the archers (perhaps allied to strong target archery participation), willing sponsorships, coaching and a wide national base of field archery to give the necessary experience and develop archers with the skill levels to compete internationally at the highest level.

We have some of the pre-requisites needed and bringing the World Championships to Ireland will help with some of the remainder.

The participation of Irish archers in these two recent elite competitions is a welcome start and our archers have blazed a path for others to follow.

Well done to those who took part and those who supported them.

La feina d’arribar-hi és dura, però el camí està marcat.
(The work getting there is hard, but the path is marked.) Josep Gregori, Field Archer.
