Do you watch the Telly?

Moved house nearly a year ago and took out telly service without thinking. Realised recently I haven't switched on the TV box in about 6 months.

I watch Netflix and movies but I don't watch anything on the standard telly.

I assume I'm not alone? Do you watch telly?

I only really watch it when there's football on and sometimes for the news that's about it.

TV is on most evenings, but alot of the time, if you were to ask me what did I watch last night, I couldn't tell you. Sometimes I even forget what I'm watching during a commercial break.

Most of the time, its just a distraction in the back ground.

I try to fit in about 5 hours a night but life can get in the way.

Sucker for historical documentaries, channels like PBS America...

I don't know how you folks watch movies on a small tablet or phone screen. To me, that's like going to the Palais Garnier to see Richie Kavanagh.

I'd wager that people have TVs that are used for Xbox, Netflix, DVDs etc, but just don't watch what's broadcast on TV.

Watching the Rugby right now. I watch about 90 minutes a day. Good drama on a large screen. Excellent. Freesat meets all our needs.

I'm going to go against all convention here and say that watching tv is both natural and normal, and even that anyone who doesn't watch television at all is abnormal.

I do, all the time! Use torrents etc too but spend a few hours every evening just flicking stations and finding random stuff to watch.

Also watch a lot of sport on tv.

Remember a similar thread on this a couple of years ago, good few people suggested that they never watch TV, yet their posting history painted an entirely different picture.

I watch rugby on TV every weekend. I also leave it on while I'm eating (news, Simpsons repeats, random stuff on Discovery, Nat Geo etc.).

I watch my regular TV shows online on my laptop or through the desktop computer which I have connected to the TV.

It's quite clear the op means turning on live TV. Since I only have saorview that would mean watching the X factor or the late late show live, or whatever. No interest.

I do watch tv shows though. On Netflix etc

I watch sport. news and current affairs, business channels like CNBC and Bloomberg, movies, music channels, Australian soaps, nature, history, space programs and anything else that catches my interest, like homeland, under the dome, wayward pines, programs like that.
I have Sky and Netflix and will use torrents if I can't find what I want.
Recently completed Breaking Bad on Netflix.
I also use the TV for my PS4, which I use to play games and Netflix.

Well I meant watching tv series or even anything that's on tv. I think people who say they don't watch any tv at all, they "read books instead" or something like that are a bit pretentious.

There are many documentaries, news channels, music channels, entertainment channels that you just turn on, I don't know why someone would decide not to watch live tv. Bits of films or shows you might decide to watch in full, etc.

I have a 40 inch 1080p TV as my PC monitor, but no, I don't watch "Telly" , I might watch BBC1 for MOTD, or RTE for the odd Ireland game. I do like to watch Downton Abbey, and will watch every Sunday night at 10:15 in 720p HD and with no ads.

I think it has become a bit of an image thing for people to say that they never watch television. However, if someone is watching Netflix, The First Row or the RTÉ Player, it's just the same thing except they can decide what time they want to. I've returned to T.V a bit.

I used to say the same and thought people who said they don't watch tv were just pretentious **** like the ones who constantly tell you they have deleted Facebook.

I always have TV on but quite rare it's used for the regular broadcast schedule. Android box for live sports and box sets has changed my viewing habits.

Have lost all interest over last few months but no doubt will get back into it when my programmes come back on autumn schedule. Even then, they'll be recorded and watched at my own leisure

Yeah, I watch the telly a lot, and also watch Netflix through Chromecastery. One strong pet hate that I have is hearing people (usually here) state, in a condescending way, is that they never watch live television, and seem to think that people who do are weirdo dinosaurs.

I find no need for one as the laptop is my TV and has been for a number of years. Most shows are available these days through Netflix or the various players like RTE Player, BBC player etc. Plus, the last time I took a look through the UPC channels all I could see was repeats of Two and a Half Men, Friends, How I Met Your Mother etc.

I have Sky HD and like the dishwasher, I could not live without it. The record facility is fantastic - all those ad breaks can be fast forwarded so I'm not entirely wasting my life. Go to somewhere like Germany and you will realise just how good British TV is.

Haven't had a tv since 2009.
Lived abroad and didnt need it, since I came back to Ireland, have just streamed everything online and either watched on the widescreen monitor setup in the living room, or hooked up a projector for films, matches etc.

imo it's not the optimal way of viewing something though. Like how I assume you wouldn't watch it on a mobile phone, a big tv is better.

Now and then I record things to watch later, but never get around to watching that either.

Must cancel that sub to the cable provider someday soon.

I keep it for now, because I have adorable little nieces and nephews whom I babysit overnight now and then, and they can watch their kiddies programs to their hearts' content. Saves me having to entertain them for hours on end, and they do prefer the box to me sometimes!

I don't think I have missed much do you?

Extremely rarely through a combination of a wife that has all her crap recorderd, a toddler who loves his telly in the evening and there being shag all on to interest me. I much prefer sitting in the kitchen with the paper listening to the radio. Ill watch the match later, if im allowed!

One thing I don't get is the idea of "the midweek movie" blockbuster on RTE or BBC or something, with the intention that people watch it live. If you want to watch Quantum of Solace, why not just do it any time instead of that specific time? What are the odds that will be the perfect time for you to watch it? The only way live tv is good for movies is if you wouldn't know or watch it otherwise and not easy to obtain otherwise and you can record them.

You might be just sitting there flicking around and come across a movie you haven't seen or would like to see again and then watch it.

I do watch tv. Sometimes I even watch shows live but I do record a lot too. I really don,t know how you can enjoy a movie or series on a laptop,tablet or a phone. First of all you have the risk that your computer device whatever it is will get a virus and not work when you want it too plus they just do not show images as good as a tv and some of the players are just plain oqward. Take RTEs player for instance. You can not skip that adds at the beginning and the middle of a program and when watching a show on it if you want to pause or rewind it a bit it never goes where you want it to go and so you end up watching bits you do not want to see again. You never have that problem with Sky+ its 1000times better. If I had to watch a show or movie on a computer I think I would choose not to watch at all. It will never be as good or better than a proper tv.

I have a projector hooked up to my laptop and watch everything like that. I still consider that 'Telly' though. Never used to watch much stuff live anyway, was always VCR'ing it, or Sky Plus'ing it in later years. Now that's just been replaced by Torrent'ing and YouTube'ing. Used to have a little pocket TV back in the 90s, now I watch TV on my Android with the help of a little gizmo gadget thingamajig when out and about on the bus/train etc, but again, but sure it's all still 'telly' really. Same shit, new shovel.

I would not be able to watch a show on a phone, but I find the 15" screen on the laptop do do the job. To enjoy a show I have never needed a big screen or anything like that. Horses for courses though.

Not having a proper TV is sad - almost as bad as not having a dishwasher :rolleyes: The really sad thing is paying Mr Murdoch so much money.
I really like those curved TVs - they seem reserve the TV just for one viewer - but then I'm a sad old git.:D

I got a basic Sky sub when i bought my new house about 5 years ago and cancelled it immediately after the 18 month contract ran out because i used it literally twice in that entire time. Bought a cheap freeview box just to have something plugged in to the sattelite dish/TV after that.

I watch everything on my Roku on Netflix/a pen drive, when i want to watch it, with no ****ing ads. **** broadcast TV at this stage, don't know how anyone watches it.

I recently had a couple of friends move in to my house for a little while and they will actually sit and watch ads during a show they want to see or will just turn on the TV and watch "whatever is on".

Idiocy.

I used to ask people if they caught 'such and such' a programme on Channel 4 etc .......only to be met with blank stares so I've given up.
I think the world is indeed divided into TV and non TV addicts. Don't think I could live in America for that reason.
